Thank you kindly :)

FYI: The picture was taken with a fisheye lens which produces a curved image, but was "de-fished" with software, producing an ultra-wide field of view with straight lines. The downside is that it makes the image a bit soft in the corners.

I was indifferent until I saw this photo. Now I think I'm going to miss it.

Thanks a bunch... I kind of like that structure. It's not Stonehenge or the Acropolis, but there's something to be said for massive columns and lintels.

Its removal might have something to do with future construction or the the PATH tunnel below. Who knows.

Making the ugly building look even MORE prominent is a dreadful idea...and the huge unbroken span of pavement won't improve things.

They are destroying the only architecturally valid piece of Newport construction... a pile of ugly boxes in "faux '60's cheap."

Maybe Lefrak can stick another slim office tower in place of the Collonade whose only fault was that it didn't pay rent!

Thanks for the explanation, ansky.

I happened to notice it when I first moved here because I thought it was bizarre and rather ugly.

I'm glad to hear they're getting rid of it.

My guess is that thing was probably in need of repair or maintenance and they did not want to pay for it. Funny thing is, I walk by there every day and never really noticed it until they started taking it down.

The sign in Newport Tower said that they are trying to improve the appearance of their building...seems like a lot of work for just that though!

Maybe it's an infestation problem they are having as in the other apartment complexes down there.

I was down in Newport yesterday it looked like a demolition company was doing some major work on that large rectangular structure with columns by the building's Washington Blvd. fa?ade.

Are they in the process of reinforcing it or are they simply removing it?

I'm not sure it serves any purpose other than being "decorative."

Here's an older photo of it that I just dug up after a bit of Googling -- it's on the bottom left:

It was a mess on the western side of the street. The automobiles heading northbound and southbound shared the northbound lanes with police directing traffic.

As a pedestrian, the only good part about it was that all of the traffic was forced to SLOW DOWN.
