Here is the email response that I received today from the general manager:

I am pleased to inform you that within the next two weeks BJ's Wholesale
Club will be installing a new and improved wheel locking system on our
shopping carts. I apologize for the inconvenience these carts have
caused the community and share in your aggravation. Hopefully the new
wheel lock system will solve this issue once and for all. We do
currently employ a cart retrieval service that is out in Jersey City 5
days a week retrieving our carts. However, Jersey City is a big town so
please be patient as we collect our strays. Please feel free to call me
if you see any carts that linger for a day or two.

Friends & Neighbors,

As I am sure you are aware, our neighborhood has a problem with shopping carts left in our neighborhood, particularly with carts from BJ's.

BJ's does collect them, and we need to encourage them to do so in a more timely manner while we figure out a more permanent solution to keeping the carts in the parking lots where they belong.

If you see a cart, call BJs at (201) 798-0500 and tell them exactly where the cart is so they can collect it. The general manager at our local BJs is named Tim Hebert. I also encourage you to email MemberCare@bjs.accentonline.com to let them know that this is a problem in our neighborhood.

You can also call the Incinerator Authority at 201-432-4645 ext. 631 or 646.

Thanks

Eric Fleming
president, HCA

While it sucks that the scrapper left the red plastic part, its probably ultimately better for someone to be collecting these things and selling them for scrap. As long as collecting the carts every few days or weeks provides BJ's with enough carts for their customers, the incentive to control the problem is pretty low. On the other hand, if the shopping carts are being stripped and taken out of the pool of available shopping carts, eventually there won't be any carts left.

Spotted one this evening behind the new Vespia dealership on 10th Street. Looked like it had been there a long time.

Thanks for the link ianmac47, looks like the word is getting out! We, the residents of downtown JC need to keep getting the word out and make everyone aware of this persistant problem. By working together we can keep this problem in the public eye, there is power in numbers!! We have to bring about a new way of thinking for our neighborhoods.... dumping shopping carts on our streets and sidewalks will NOT be tolerated. I think some people actually thinks having these carts all over is acceptable, like part of the urban landscape. Some people are probably so used to seeing them they almost DON'T even notice them!! Keep up the good fight eveyone!

Also, you can "Digg it" here:
http://digg.com/travel_places/BJ_s_Allows_Carts_to_Litter_City

My feeling is the more people read about how BJ's is letting their shopping carts roam the streets, the more likely they are to do something. Or the more likely the city will. Or both.

Also, you could email The Consumerist, ( tips@consumerist.com ), they are often effective at convincing large corporations to do the right thing by publicly shaming the company.

Hi All,
I spoke with BJ's regional manager Mauro Amato about 2 weeks ago and he said they are going to install 1 front wheel anti-theft lock and 1 back wheel anti-theft lock on all there carts to prevent people from stealing their carts. When the 2 wheel lock carts are pushed over an in-ground sensor BOTH wheels will lock up preventing the carts from leaving their lot. He also said they tried single wheel locks but people would just tip the carts back, lifting the single front locked wheel off the ground, and then wheel the carts passed the sensors thus defeating the locks. Mauro seemed just as frustrated by the cart situation as we residents claiming that he has to pay someone $500 a week just to drive around in a truck to retrieve all BJ's carts. We should all place a follow up call to Mauro...here is his number:1-845-803-2208

Thanks,
Jaah

To those who will be involved in these discussions: "trucks to pick up their abandoned carts" is not a prevention procedure. Neither is "deposit carts". Anyone who needs a cart to get things home will be willing to abandon a quarter for the convenience. The deposit cart was devised to encourage customers to return the cart to a central staging point after they've loaded their car. It reduces parking lot clutter; it does not prevent cart theft. Wheel locks are being used successfully by other big stores in the area and barriers by at least one.

We will need everyone's help in calling. The Jersey City Incernator Authority have been great in getting these carts picked up when people call in. However, there are too many carts. Though there is legislation against cart theft, most people feel that having a the Police arrest a person for this pales in comparison to drug dealing, disorderly groups, drinking with open containers, or fighting. The JCIA officers should be able to fine the store for not having prevention procedures such as locked wheels, barriers, deposit carts, or trucks to pick up their abandoned carts. This approach can be more realistic. We are currently researching this with Councilman Fulop's office. At this time, a few members have contacted BJ's and we are asking all of our members to do the same. We need your help: 1) If you see a shopping cart, please call the JCIA Dispatch office at 201-432-4645 ext. 631 or 646. 2) Call BJ's and let them know that there is a constant problem with their shopping carts. They have a truck that is suppose to pick them up but it is not picking them up. The General Manager is Tim Hebert, the Regional Manager is Mauro Amato. The phone number to the club is 201-798-0500. 3) Send an email to MemberCare@bjs.accentonline.com and tell them that the abandonement of BJ's shopping carts in Jersey City has been creating a lot of problems. Thanks Pam -- This email was brought to you by the Downtown Jersey City Watch ( downtownjcwatch@gmail.com ). "We watch out for each other."

I e-mailed the property owner and they sent my e-mail to BJ's & Shop Rite. Shop Rite manager was very nice-he said they use a security cart system that covers the perimiter of the parking lot so the wheels will lock. They also send someone out every morining to retrieve & do a cart count every 2 weeks. (I guess that's why we don't see too many of thier carts)He said BJ's use to use the same system but they removed it. I sent a note to corporate to see what's going on. Let's see what will happen.

Some people are bold enough to keep their very own personal carts outside for all to see

This was on Marin:

I've really been feeling left out of this thread, having lived a relatively cart-free existence.

until last night, when I arrived home to find one right in front of my stoop, blocking the way to my front door, like a shiny red sentinel.

my very own cart!

I am now a real member of the community.

Now that's a great idea!

If we get enough of the BJ's carts in a row and then stack them vertically, the Wayne Street park will be completely inaccessible to all of the hoodlums.

And if it's done right, it could even be aesthetically pleasing -- like a sculptural wall of cart art!
