I always considered Toms River/Seaside Heights the start of South Jersey.

My ex-boyfriend was in Toms River.

He had to drive 45 minutes to Red Bank for band practice. I consider the Red Bank area to be Mid Jersey.

It depends on where you're from. I've heard people from Bergen County tell me they have to leave JC to go "back to North Jersey." To them, Bergen County alone is North Jersey. I have relatives in Burlington County who refer to places like Freehold and Edison as North Jersey.

As someone who didn't grow up in NJ, I'd say North Jersey includes the counties of Bergen, Passaic, Sussex, Warren, Morris, Essex, Hudson, Union. Central includes Middlesex, Somerset, Hunterdon, Mercer, Monmouth. South includes Ocean, Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, Atlantic, Salem, Cumberland and Cape May.

Jersey City would be northern New Jersey;
New Brunswick would be central New Jersey;
Camden would be southern New Jersey.

North Jersey is any county that exclusively receives NY television channels; south Jersey is any county that exclusively receives Phillie channels; central Jersey is any county that receives both New York and Phillie channels.

I always considered Ocean County and below to be South Jersey. From the Ocean County line north to around Rahway or Linden might be Central Jersey and above that is North Jersey.
