Maybe this is a little to local to the South East corner of Greenville but there was a bar / resturant / pizza place called Barney's on the corner of Gates and Garfield . My mother would call and order chicken salad club sandwiches and my father would pick them up on his way home from work. One of my favorite Friday night treats as a kid. Sunday's were spent at the Tripoli on Newark Ave . It was the only Italian resturant in JC that my Grandmother thought was worthy of her leaving her own kitchen for. During the summer we would frequent the resturant in Long Branch called Sergio's that the family that owned the Tripoli opened in their basement just for the summer and you would see the exact same people down there.

From a Greenville Boy... How about The K 9 on the "back highway"across from Roosevelt Stadium.
Also, The Charcoal Treat near the city line of Bayonne. Come to think of it, how about the snack bar at the "New" Boulevard Pool. For some reason it was always new. That snack bar was my first encounter with rock & roll in 1955, with the juke box blaring and all the older kids dancing to the tunes. Great memories.

CANTON TEA GARDEN !!!! o'doyles ko-shing jules still open rita & joe's rizzo's pizza & bakery lincoln inn nha trang kellogg garden not restaurants, but worthy of remembering: rand ice cream r&l deli on danforth (best rye bread) i'm sure i'm missing more than a few, but it was fun.

Pal Burger which is now occupied by the Philippine Bread House on Newark Avenue near the Hudson Gardens.
As a 12 year old, I got my first job there cleaning the grease trap once a week for 10 bucks. Good payday in 1974 for an hour of work. Worst burgers ever!

How about Mr. S hamburger joint on the State Hwy (139) it was on the west bound/north side of the Hwy. I got a kick out of the way they wrapped the hamburger in the thin paper. It was McDonalds Jersey City style.

I'm still upset that I never got to experience the old Harbor Casino. Can anybody else share good stories from the place?
The newer Harbor Casino seems kind of sterile to me.

Wow.............born and raised in the heights.....35 yrs till I left awhile ago.....Texas Wieners on Central and Hutton what a place !!!....one side was the "restaurant"......other side was a bar.....one of the all time "dine and dash" joints......had no restrooms.....if you needed it you went through the kitchen to the bar........see ya !!!!......lmao remembering it.....another place from the same time period was 2 blo,ks south on the other side of Central Ave......The Mohawk Diner......this had to be where the term "greasy spoon " originated.....got me thinking now.....be back some other time with more

Does anyone remember when the Bickford's cafeteria on the Journal Square concourse closed? I know the restaurant opened in the '30s & closed in the '70s but I'm not sure exactly which year the restaurant closed. Bickford's was on the ground floor of the Holland Hotel.

Ilvento's was amazing down on West Side Ave, right next to the cemetery. They had the best italian food in jc at the time. Thankfully enough Carmine's opened up on Mallory Ave between Williams and Clendenny to take their place, if only carmine's made pizza.

How about the decision of "the nee, the nette, or the OB" - Where would it be- The Colony, The Colonette, or the Ocean Breeze ? Was that chromium we got from Al Neuman's the same that they put in vitamins now?

 This place sounds like a dream come true.Can anyone name a "fancy" Italian restaurant, other than Casa Dante, in the JSQ 'hood. I was talking to someone earlier who was trying to (unsuccessfully) name it.

Downtown Eddie's Mixed Grill which was on Jersey circa late mid to late 1990s. Think a fired destroyed it. Great Chicken Marsala, with sauteed spinach, mashed potatoes and bread for 10.00 and half priced martinis and all you could eat fish & chips on Wednesdays I think. It was always crowded, nice people, diverse crowd, good service.

Here's one I didn't see mentioned. "MISTER S" at the bottom of Danforth Ave and Route 440 hamburgers you could break a tooth on.. A really obscure restaurant located in the Journal Square area the " YELLOW BOWL", I think its now a Culinary school or it was 10 years ago.

Churches Chicken where Grove Point is now in downtown Jersey City. After it was torn down it was a parking lot for years before they built Grove Point.
