Exchange Inn/Rosie Radicans

My late Grandma and uncle owned the Exchange Inn on Exchange Place. They lost their lease in 1992, and had to close. Grandma passed away 3 years later probably from being so disappointed for the loss of her life's passion which was to serve others good food and provide good service My uncle later opened Rosie Radicans above the Path Station on Exchange Pl.. It was half elegant half pub, with a lot of character. Unfortunately the owners wanted a quicker food establishment type place as opposed to full service dining and the restaurant closed in 2008.

Mickey Rooney's Wiener World over by the Hudson Mall in one of those oddly shaped round(?) buildings by Dunkin Donuts ..early 80?s.

Here?s another..over in that big empty lot on the corner of Rt 440(1&9) and Comunipaw Ave. There was a motel named the Hudson Motor Lodge (yellow sign is still there) next to it going toward Newark was a diner called The Colony Diner. Both were ripped down because of soil contamination. I recall two attempts to build on the lot. One was an office tower with retail space the other years later was a futuristic Audi dealer. Both deals fell through.

I used to get confused between the Colony and the Collonette. They were both on 440. Then there was another diner on Communipaw that is now IHOP I believe. I forget what that one was called. And then of course who could beat Al's diner on Communipaw next to Mc Donalds.

How about Mr. S hamburger joint on the State Hwy (139) it was on the west bound/north side of the Hwy. I got a kick out of the way they wrapped the hamburger in the thin paper. It was McDonalds Jersey City style.

I loved Mr. S. They had little school desk style chairs with cup holders. My mom took us there so many times, and yes, I remember the thin paper!
