Since I was a little kid in elementary school, I have been hearing the dreaded warning "robots will soon replace humans in the workplace". I don't see it happening the way people fear it. Yes, a robot can easily replace a human for low-skilled, menial jobs. And, certainly technologies that can crunch data and crank out reports, analysis and stats quickly will outperform a human, but you ultimately need other humans to program and build those technologies, and sometimes to interpret, or interface with, those technologies. Nah, I don't buy this premise, at all.

I meant you have to live in SF (SV) if you're tech startup or VC the same way you have to live around LA if you aspire to be in the movies. Sure, you can be an aspiring actor in NYC (there are plenty of those) but LA is where it's at. So in that sense there is "no alternative" to LA, or SV.

Except there is an alternative, there clearly is. And the 2nd biggest tech market in the US is right across the river.

I would even argue that, as far as tech jobs is concerned, NYC is a better market for IT workers focused on higher paying jobs, instead of being a code monkey. While SF gets all the press (Silicon Valley and all that) in NYC you have the HQs of almost every major law and financial firm, which means the IT departments for those companies are usually housed there, with smaller regional offices only employing a small crew to assist with local matters. Undoubtedly, there are a ton of IT jobs in SF and the surrounding areas, but I have stayed here because the pay and availability of quality, high paying IT jobs was much better over here. And, btw, because of the large pool of IT talent in NYC, lots of start ups are now getting started here, or setting up large operations in NYC, which is how that Silicon Alley moniker got started.

I meant no alternative if you want to be close all the startups, incubators, and accelerators. But it is interesting that JC made the list. SF has Silicon Valley, NYC has Silicon Alley, and we have Chromium Alley. ;)

So no alternative except NYC, which you just referenced and therefore, contradicted yourself?

I read stillinjc's post as no alternative if you need to work in the SF area. I think you just can't read that well??

Well, you read it incorrectly, then.

Yes, SF is #1 in tech and VC but there is absolutely no alternative? That's extremely false.

NY, Boston, LA, Seattle, DC, Chicago, Austin

Cool list. SF is absolutely ridiculous, but you have to live in the Valley if you're tech or VC. There is absolutely no alternative. For my money, I pick Huntington Beach. Very relaxed vibe, awesome place.

Where is the N.I.M.B.Y. anti-C.R.E.A.M. anti-gentrification cohort?
That SF median rent is comfortably above NYCs
