Development moves inward because waterfront prices are absurd. 5 - 7 years from now, can see naysayers saying "wow, who would've thunk it?" Someone has to be a prescient pioneer.

Are you specifically looking at the condos at the corner of First and Brunswick?

i live in the same general neighborhood, although not as close to the bars as 1st and brunswick.

its generally quiet, although if you are easily intimidated by loud, but essentially harmless teenagers, as seem to be around from time to time, then you might be a bit skittish.

there are alot of old timers/long-time residents around, especially during the day, which makes me feel safe, even if it is quiet. i dont worry particularly about walking around at night, in this area, as i would on say erie or newark where it seems like more muggings are reported, but except on rare occasions, i am not out that late, and if i am, i take a taxi.

depending on what NYC suburbs (i lived in yonkers for a few years, not much different, IMHO) you are living in, this may or may not be much of a culture shock, but definitely get a feel by walking around at all different times of the day or night.

I live near 2 schools now, and I've grown to hate 2:00 - 3:00 pm! LOL
I work in Manhattan, but I live in the NYC suburbs, so this is going to be a little bit of a culture shock.

That area is pretty desolate. My spidey sense has tingled the few times I've walked around there late at night. Even during the day, it's empty. Are you looking at the place on the SW corner of the intersection? If so, see it in person first. I think the embankment butting right up behind it is a big security problem.

As others said, the neighborhood is great w galleries, bistros, etc...

Are you female? Living alone? ...if so, I would really spend sometime and take a look at the area at night and decide for yourself. Personally, I probably would hesitate living right on that block and pull your radius closer in to the path. Plus if you're looking now, you should note that the 'gang' types aren't even out as much now in the winter as compared to the summer.

That said, I live only a block away and have never had any real problems

It's basically a good neighborhood. The only problems : sometimes the kids from Ferris High School are a pain in the butt. Also, the patrons of the Latin Lounge on 2nd and Indio's Place on 1st make too much noise after hours. But generally these are minor annoyances.

Well, you have Carmine's Pizza there which is one of the best in town, You have the Dixon Mills, there are a lot of nice Galleries & Vintage stores on Brunswick and the surrounding area. It is much younger and hipper than most of Downtown or the waterfront. You are near a ton of bars and food. (Check out Second St Bakery for a blast from the past)

You are a short walk to Grove Street and to Liberty State Park via Jersey Avenue (nice park to bike in) - I gotta run or I would write more -- Search this list for info.

Only down side is the High School nearby is a drag because they let the kids out at lunch time and some are gang member types and have caused issues.

I'm not from the JC area, but I am looking to move soon. I wanted to stay closer to the Grove Street PATH area, so I'm primarily looking at places within a 5-10 block area of the Grove Street station. I was curious about the 1st Street and Brunswick Street area. Is it a safe area? Any thoughts, insight, etc. would be helpful and appreciated!
