The African American Cultural Arts Festival is back in Jersey City this weekend -- and the event will help showcase the city's new flagship park. The celebration of African culture and heritage, Saturday, Aug. 27 from noon to 7 p.m., will be the first festival held in the $38 million Berry Lane Park on Garfield Avenue. The festival had been held at the Hub on Martin Luther King Drive in past years, but it was not held in 2015. The festival will showcase numerous cultural performances and activities for both adults and children, including musical performances, spoken word poets, stilt walkers, dancers, and even a drum ensemble for the kids. "There's going to be everything from jazz to gospel to hip-hop," said Daoud David Williams, chairman of the event. "The emphasis is on the celebration of African culture; not just of Africa, but of the heritage from all around the world." The dog run is dirt, not concrete. I don't see the comparison to the pedestrian plaza. I also don't know why you think the pedestrian plaza is "nasty." It looks no different than what Manhattan looked like when leaving exiting the PATH after it first opened. Now, Manhattan's is full of food trucks and the walking space is chopped in half. I prefer what we have now.

I've used the dog run each weekend morning since it opened. The only downside, presently, is the lack of shade. Given the high temperatures, my guy just tires out too quickly to spend a lot of time there.

I drove by twice today, and saw several cops milling around-which is great, as locals have been complaining of rowdiness, drinking, late night music, etc. If they promote good behavior and nip the other stuff early it should be a great addition. And there is a big electronic sign on Garfield asking drivers to slow down. Of course, pedestrians don't seem to want to walk twenty yards to cross in the designated crosswalk (and these were adults) so hopefully smaller kids do.

It looks like a great park, but it's too bad they didn't or couldn't include a track. There should have been room since they included a football field. It would be nice to have a decent 400m track here, especially with the one in Lincoln Park under construction. Guess I'll keep going to Weehawken.

Paranoid people are paranoid. Far too often, something good starts happening and instead of pushing for that change, people get in its way.
As Monroe pointed out, this was inspected and confirmed by Feds and NJ. Outside of paranoia, where is the objection coming from?

I'm just as perplexed as to what information they have that the City or the Redevelopment Authority doesn't. It just seems like its NIMBYism gone mad. If the EPA came up here and gave it their okay I'm not sure what more else they want.
If they have the smoking gun or magic bullet then show it. Otherwise you're just screaming at windmills.

Mr. Harper and GRACO have enormous credibility. They litigated for a full clean up of the PPG site when the city tried to settle for less.
Very likely the last two posters are trolls trying to spin away from the issue and attack the messenger. The city also should also accord them respect and address their concerns. Seems like little has changed under new management. Quote:

Did these people even do their research or read? There have been community meetings from the very beginning. They even let the public help design the skate park. It sounds like these people don't want this great park at all. SHAME ON THEM. We should be supporting this park NOT publishing this crap.

What exactly is 'RJ Harper' basing his objection on? The Feds AND NJ have both given the project a clean bill of health, and in fact the apartments at Pacific/Grand were built on similar remediated ground and have passed every test.

A group of residents in Jersey City's Ward F wants a new park in their neighborhood, but only if it's a clean one. Despite assurances from the city and state that the site for the 17-acre Berry Lane Park currently under construction along Garfield Avenue has been fully remediated, some in the Bergen-Lafayette neighborhood are concerned that a hazardous amount of chromium still lingers in the work area. "We would love to see a park where kids could have fun and play," said Severn Willis, a member of the Garfield Randolph Arlington Carteret Ocean Avenue Community Organization. "But we want a clean and healthy park."  Union Street resident RJ Harper, one of the leading activists against the continued construction of the park, says the city and the company tasked with the environmental cleanup, PPG Industries, has left a substantial amount of chromium in the notoriously contaminated area. However, both PPG and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection deny that claim and say that the land on which the park is being built upon has been completely remediated and no longer suffers from chromium pollution. Prior to starting construction on the park, the PPG performed a nine-month, $10 million remediation project that removed 210 cubic yards of tires, 1.2 million gallons of contaminated groundwater and 49,000 tons of chromium. Have you heard of LSP?
 If you want a park with endless green space, that's all they've got. What the city and residents collaboratively determined was that ballfields for city teams, skate parks, playgrounds, etc. were needed. There were scores of meetings where the community drew plans ourselves and they were in fact taken into account; did you participate?
