Plano is dull and uninteresting. It's just rows of strip malls. And the Texas heat can kill. Let's not also mention that sales taxes and fees in Texas are very regressive.

It can now take 2 generations to pay off a house -
The financial and employment climate of this country and even our State has been unsteady for quite some time. Anyone of us can be 'a non-home owner' and on the rental market if one or more primary income earners of a family were to lose their jobs for a significant amount of time. With gentrification being promoted and endorsed by many cities, the cost of rentals will only force people out and with no prospects to return - What gentrification is doing is eroding the 'middle classes' and its no wonder cities are no longer a place people can retire in - the problem is that the services and facilities our seniors need are in the city !

When the economy went south it effected all groups including the children of seniors. But you are assuming everyone who lives in senior housing are citizens. Some are not, remember Obama's aunt live in public housing.

Plano is a pretty cool place. You can buy a ranch nearby for less than the cost of an average downtown JC house, and the property tax is perhaps 1/5th of JC. Walkability score is probably near zero - you need a car to get anywhere. Outside rush hour, Dallas is an easy 30 min drive. Bars and restaurants are pretty leading-edge, and the sheer variety of local recreation within a short drive blows away anything JC, or even NYC can offer. Medical costs are low. And everything is insanely inexpensive. If you can handle the summer heat, can drive and are reasonable active, I'd say it's an awesome place to retire.

There are many seniors who live in senior housing, they are a source of joy for politicians who have voters without worry about rising taxes. This is about seniors who own property and are struggling to make ends meet.

I for one am surprised, and while I didn't delve into the methodology, if places like Port St. Lucie and Plano, Texas, top the list what do they mean by quality of life?
Mind you, I'm no fan of JC but I can see appreciating it more when I retire: - reasonable access to Manhattan for cultural activities (cheap or free for seniors) - wide variety of housing stock, making it easy to downsize - generally walkable neighborhoods, for day to day necessities and staying fit

Is anywhere in NJ a good place to retire? If you retire in NJ you're either mentally ill, or totally dependent on the state.

JC is good at milking every cent out of white collar professionals through ridiculous 'luxury' apartments, taxes and top heavy services. Gentrification has caused these high prices and taxes, because there are no checks and balances for the blue collar workers, working poor and our aged.
Once you have everything geared at gentrification, then all prices go up ... it would seem that 'everyone' is trying to empty out our wallets!

I'm sure they didn't even really take into account the cost of ambulances and hospitals in this area, which are notoriously high.

I suspect many of the 2,300 people in lien this year are seniors. If their heater breaks or roof leaks they must choose between fixing the problem or paying taxes. As I said before affordable housing is not affordable taxes. The more people we place in JC, the more services must be provided the reason for the increase in taxes. Another reason this administration should have not granted Salem Lafayette another 30 year tax abatement bringing the total to 66 years.
