A diy alternative is using Blue Iris for video monitoring, with a cheap sms/auto-dial package off ebay for other sensors.

We have Simplesafe which is a great DIY home security system.

We use Frontpoint for our shop. The price is pretty good, the customer service is good, and it is pretty reliable. We have door and window sensors, motion sensors, and a silent alarm panic button. I can easily set up and change alarm codes for my employees so I know who is coming in and out of the shop, and it's easy to set up alerts (via text or email or calls) to know if doors are opening or people entering at unexpected times. All this can be done online in a couple minutes.

It also has a backup battery and it runs on cellular networks so no worries about internet/telephone/power going out.

You should be aware that you have to get an alarm permit from the city and renew it for about $50 each year. If you get more than three false alarms in a year the city starts fining you.

I have FrontPoint. It works just fine. They are rather flexible with how the system can be setup. The phone app is very convenient and the system uses mobile communication so no land line is needed.

I can't say that I've much experience with any other providers, but I'm fine with them as my provider.

Friends of mine use it and I have not heard them complaining (about that) in 2 years so all good.
