A kichen need EITHER a window or a vent with proper draw. Whether or not it is or is not attached to a range hood is immaterial.

If one has an UNVENTED range hood, the kind that merely blow air through a carbon filter, the need for a window or a proper vent still pertains.

In any case, a range hood is NOT required by code.

If you DO have a hood, the ideal is a hood that is vented directly outdoors...those filtering recirculating hoods are just silly marketing gimmicks and not worth the space they take up.

our loft does not have a range hood, none of the lofts in our building do. when we gut renovated our kitchen i checked with fire department & buildings department and was told none was required. i'm guessing they'd know best ;)

I seem to recall hearing that if the kitchen didn't have a window it needed at least an unvented filter hood, but I can't verify that.

Building Performance Institute (BPI) requires ranges have a hood that ventilates to the exterior. Has to do with indoor air pollution / air quality.

If I remember correctly, JC requires a Fire Department inspection, or a special permit to install a range hood. My memory maybe a bit faulty though on this.

Looking at a place in downtown JC and the range doesn't have a hood or an exhaust fan, are there any codes for this??

I appreciate any help, thanks in advance.
