If Fulop expects to run for Mayor or even for Council At-large (the usual stepping stone to Mayor), he's going to need a machine of his own. And yes, he's going to have to make some deals with some scumbag politicians and political players to build that machine. And he's going to owe those people if he wins.

Idealism gets you into heaven, but not into the Mayor's chair.

The machine must figure if Healy can get a zero-experience, convicted drunk driver elected, he can do anything.

Healy to be chairman of HCDO

Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy is positioned to don another title by the middle of next week: chairman of the powerful Hudson County Democratic Organization.

Already the head of the political party in his hometown, Healy is expected to step up in stature given the number HCDO loyalists elected as party committee people in Tuesday's election, party officials said.

"HCDO has a clear-cut majority," said Hudson County Executive County Thomas DeGise. "I don't think it's that close you have to count."

DeGise, who won re-election on Tuesday, as well as other party bigwigs such as North Bergen Mayor and state Sen. Nicholas Sacco - who also won the party's nomination Tuesday - all support Healy for the party's top spot.

The reorganization meeting is scheduled for next Wednesday, but the time and location is still being determined, party officials said.

Being chairman of the Democratic party is a big deal. State Sen. Bernard Kenny, the outgoing chairman, said the chairman determines who runs on the HCDO ballot line, which in heavily Democratic Hudson County is often tantamount to victory.

But the HCDO ballot line isn't impregnable, as Union City Mayor Brian Stack proved Tuesday. He trounced HCDO-backed West New York Mayor Silverio "Sal" Vega for the nomination for state senator in the 33rd District in a 77 percent landslide.

Stack couldn't be reached yesterday to find out if he planned to mount a challenge, but a Stack ally, Hoboken Freeholder Maurice Fitzgibbons, said he doubted Stack would involve himself.
