Definitely a symptom of these difficult times. Unfortunately it ultimately affects all of us in the long run. Fraudulent claims will raise insurance rates. Whatever the case may be whether it is a family member stealing or a person is committing fraud, the result is dishonesty and that is so sad. It is all a part of the vicious cycle that f***s up our economy.

I agree. It sounds like SCAM is written all over this crime.

I think you actually have to die in order to qualify for a Darwin. No question she does sound like a dingbat - either that, or I agree with the insurance fraud theory.

Time to get new family members....Yikes...

I smell insurance fraud.

What, she put the rings, etc., into a bag in her purse and was going to throw them on right at the stroke of midnight???? Who does that??

This story makes me think of the scene in that movie Sidways -- when he visits his mother in California.

$70,000 worth of jewelry swiped at New Year's Eve party; victim says family member likely stole it

by Charles Hack/The Jersey Journal
Sunday January 04, 2009, 5:15 PM

A 66-year-old Port Liberte resident in Jersey City told police yesterday that $70,000 worth of her jewelry was swiped during a New Year's Eve party with family members at her home, according to police reports.

The victim told police she wanted to ring in the New Year adorned with some of her priciest baubles.

So at dinner time, she placed two rings and a pair of earrings in a small blue Tiffany bag and left it in her purse in the living room for safe keeping, reports said.

But when the clock struck midnight, she reached into her purse and the bag of jewelry was gone, reports said.

Police said they plan to question the relatives at the party, mostly out-of-towners who were visiting from California.

Reported missing was a diamond ring worth $45,000, a second ring worth $15,000 and a pair of earrings valued at $10,000.

The reports did not say why the victim waited until Saturday to report the theft.
