When you ask amateurs to act as front-line security personnel, don't be surprised when you get amateur security

Aiyana Cronk/The Jersey Journal

It started with a frantic call to NJ Transit about a man carrying an assault rifle at the Liberty State Park Light Rail station, and it ended with police finding the alleged gunman and discovering that he was carrying something far less deadly an umbrella.

At about 8 a.m. yesterday, an NJ Transit customer phoned the agency?s tip line to say there was a man boarding the light rail carrying what appeared to be an assault rifle.

A description of the man, from the color of his pants, black, to the cast on his arm, was broadcast among law enforcement and it drew a response from police from NJ Transit, Port Authority and Jersey City, NJ Transit spokesman John Durso Jr. said.

Authorities found the man on the train headed for Exchange Place and discovered the ?gun? was a run-of-the-mill dark-colored umbrella, Durso said.

Still, NJ Transit officials don?t want passengers to refrain from calling police just because of one false alarm.

?We are so grateful for the continued vigilance of the public and NJ Transit customers,? Durso said. ?Even though this did not turn out to be something, we still encourage people to see it and say it.?
