Teen arrested in shooting of woman at Jersey City boarding house
by Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal
Monday January 19, 2009, 6:05 PM

A 17-year-old Jersey City boy with suspected ties to the Bloods street gang has been charged with the cold-blooded attack on a city woman who was shot in the head in a boarding house off Journal Square Thursday, police said.

The boy, a resident of Bergen Avenue near Dwight Street, was arrested at the Jersey City Medical Center on Friday and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a sawed-off shotgun, and additional weapons offenses, police said today.

Police responding to the boarding house at Academy Street and Baldwin Avenue on Thursday night found the 23-year-old victim writhing and screaming for help with a bullet wound to her temple and no exit wound, reports said.

A friend told police she arrived moments earlier and while running up the stairs, a man wearing a ski mask ran past her in the opposite direction, reports said.

After the shooting the victim was rushed to the Medical Center where she began having seizures and was placed in an induced coma, reports said.

Police developed information that the shooter was asking about the victim's condition and that he might try to see her at the hospital, so investigators staked out the hospital, officials said.

Around 4 p.m. Friday the boy's cousin, Kyliah Grand, 18, of Arlington Avenue, turned up at the hospital and a short time later the boy showed arrived as well, police said. Police arrested both, charging Grant with conspiracy to tamper with a witness, police said.

Based on information released by police, the possible motive of the shooting was not clear, nor was it clear why the boy and his cousin went to the hospital.

No update on the victim's condition was available.

Shotguns dont shoot bullets, I wish the Jersey Journal would do a little research before they write something. I hope this woman makes it though, a sawed off shotgun is no joke at close range. I could just imagine the damage it has done to her head and face.

Considering Jersey City was once the car theft capitol of the country and was one of the top 10 for highest car theft rates for years, this statistic is only a fraction of what it once was. I remember an old article over 10 years ago that said 1 in 38 or 48 cars in the city were reported stolen back then. Downtown used to be the capitol within the the capitol for auto thefts at that time. The amount of stolen cars has dropped by a lot over the years.

Actually crime went up for 2008, here are the numbers added up from the JCPD website compared to last years total. Keep in mind they don't edit there site once they post so it can be higher then what they gave. For example the murders missing from there site. ( I gave the real murder count anyway)

2008
Murder-27 Rape-57 Robbery-1256 Aggravated Assault-954 Burglary-1868 Larceny-4423 Auto Theft-1160 Arson-82 Overall Crime Index-9822

2007
Murder-20 Rape-47 Robbery-1248 Aggravated Assault-1106 Burglary-1504 Larceny-4082 Auto Theft-1218 Arson-100 Overall Crime Index-9325

So that means Murder is up 7, Rape up 10, Robbery up 8, Aggravated Assault down 152, Burglary up 364, Larceny up 341, Auto theft down 58, and Arson down 18. Overall crime is up by almost 500 crimes.

Cops: Gunman asks for death when caught

Monday, January 19, 2009

A Jersey City man who allegedly threatened to shoot a liquor store owner Thursday begged police to shoot him when they caught up with him, reports said.

Just after 6:30 p.m. Jose Torres, 50, of Monticello Avenue, walked into Belmont Liquors at 157 Monticello Ave., showed the owner his gun, and threatened to come back and shoot him, reports said.

Police caught up with Torres at the corner of Belmont and Bergen avenues and asked him to take his hands out of his pockets, reports said.

Torres began screaming, "'Shoot me, I want to die,' " kept his hands in his pockets, and started walking away, reports said.

Cops stopped Torres, searched his pockets and found a loaded handgun, reports said.

Torres was charged with attempted robbery, terroristic threats, and several weapons possession offenses, according to the report.

A 23-year-old Jersey City woman is in a coma after being shot in the head during what appears to have been a robbery in a city boarding house Thursday night, authorities said.

Doctors induced the coma when the shooting victim began having seizures, officials said.

Police responding to the scene at Academy Street and Baldwin Avenue spoke to a friend of the victim who had heard the woman screaming on the third floor, reports said.

The friend told police that while running up the stairs, a man wearing a ski mask ran past her in the opposite direction, reports said. On the third floor she found the victim crawling on the floor with blood pouring from the gunshot wound in her temple, reports said.

The victim was still writhing and screaming for help when police arrived and she was rushed to the Jersey City Medical Center, reports said.

Medical Center officials would not release her condition last night.

No one is saying snitching is evil. It is just hard to do when the outcome is more negative then positive. I will give you an example. My cousin in the 90s was robbed by other students on his way home from school by teens he knew the names of. He went to the police and told them the kids names. They were arrested and the property was returned. Since the suspects were all juveniles they were all back in school within the next day or two. They jumped him outside the school for snitching so he told the school. The students were eventually kicked out of the school. The students that were kicked out then spread the word in the neighborhood to there friends my cousin was a snitch. After they were kicked out older teens that my cousin doesnt know would jump him for being labeled a snitch. It got to the point he had to be let out of school early by the teachers so he could leave out a backdoor and take the long way home to avoid being robbed and jumped again. Just walking from place to place became a challenge since he didnt know who was out to get him and who wasnt. He was only 13 at that time now think about how much worst it would have been if these teens were older. They were 13-15 and this all happened in Downtown now think about this happening in a neighborhood that has more criminals that are more violent that follow this code.

If I remember right wasn't Rafael Torres one of the guys arrested in one of the many shootings that took place over a 24 hour period a few months back. I'm not 100% sure if he was a shooter or a victim but I want to say he was one of the shooters. Even if he was I wouldn't wish being paralyzed or death on no one. I'm suprised also how many people don't understand why many people don't snitch out of fear of retaliation.

If you read the causes of death for the victims only 15 of the 36 (whole county) were victims of gun violence. He blames illegal guns for the spike but he doesnt point out there were alot more stabbing this year then is normal. The same when it went up in 2005 the abnormal number of stabbings helped bring up the murder rate. I personally am against the one gun a month law Healy is attempting to put into affect. I don't see it helping this state when most illegal handguns are from out of state. If anything it only motivates criminals to traffic more illegal guns since this law would increase the demand and makes it more profitable to the suppliers.

Also here is the map of the murders in Hudson County.

Yes it is 27 now, the second highest murder count in 10 years or more. Exactly how many more I am not sure since I can't find statistics from before 1998. So in the last three years we have one year with the highest murder rate since the late 80s(2005) and the highest since the late 90s(2008).

She could have been on her way home after work and decided to get something to eat before heading home. A 16-17 year old by law can work as late as 11pm. The $300 could have been from her cashing her pay check before work since she might of had school and work over the next couple days and didn't have time to cash it another time. There are not many places to eat late at night and the 24 hour store laws passed in 2005 makes it even harder to get something to eat late if you live outside Downtown. Also curfew doesn't apply if your on your way home from work.

I say most of this because when I was her age I was on my way home from work around this time.

They've worked hard to convince people to go to a very dangerous area. Yet they don't secure the area, they don't even warn people that it is dangerous.

Since when does it become NJ Transits responsibility to post that an area is "dangerous." Does that mean every neighborhood bus stop and train station that is in a area with a crime should post, "Warning you are standing in a high crime area ride at own risk." That is unrealistic, besides there isn't that much violent crime at that stop. Check out the crime map there is very little violent crime near that stop. Most of the violence is near Pacific Ave in that area which is three four blocks away from there. Just type in 100 Monitor St and you will see there is very little violence around the station.

Don't you understand this law is not going to reduce the amount of guns on the street? The majority of the guns on the street aren't even from this state. If anything this law would only make trafficking and dealing guns more profitable on the black market. More profit increases the odds there will be more guns sold on the street. Why do you think Camden and Trenton have such high murder rates? It is because they are so close to Pennsylvania one of the states a large precentage of NJ guns come from.

If you read the article it even states why some people need to buy more then one gun at once.

"But some law-abiding citizens buy several guns at once to avoid repeated waits for background checks, gun-rights groups say. New Jersey already has some of the toughest gun laws in the nation, according to the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, a gun-control group. Pistol purchases can take weeks or even months, gun advocates say."

The murder count is really 26 not 25. I have been keeping count so the police must not be counting one of them in the stats. Why would they not count only one murder? My theory is one more on there stats would mean the second highest murder rate in the last ten years. That would draw more attention then one shy of that number. Besides 2005 with 37 murders, 26 has been the highest amount of murders in the last 10 years or more.

Car damaged by shots fired in dispute
Tuesday, December 30, 2008

Shots were fired outside an office building Friday night on the 300 block of York Street, damaging a car.

A group of men in their late 20s and early 30s began arguing outside the building just before 8:30, according to a police report. All but one of the men left, but then one came back and started yelling at the remaining man, police said.

The man who never left went inside the building next door, returned with a handgun and fired three shots at the other man, cops said.

The shots missed their target, but one smashed two windows in a nearby 2003 Mitsubishi sedan, according to the report.

The gunman ran back into the building and the other man fled, cops said.

I know this was over exaggerated to the point it is unrealistic but it is even more unrealistic to say there is no gang initiations. It is a known fact that October , especially October 30th and 31st are major Blood initiation days. October 31st is almost a holiday of its own to this gang. Since the late 90s I always remember there being random slashings, beatings, stabbings and shooting these two days but for some reason it is never in the paper. I dont know if it is the police not reporting it to the news or the news not wanting to print the crimes but it seems these two days more then other days the paper under reports crime. Now I know the Jersey Journal doesnt report every major crime but ask your self why on days like Mischief Night and Halloween when major crimes are known to spike, very few crimes if any make the paper.

Cop's gun stolen from home safe
Saturday, October 25, 2008
By JACOB KAMARAS
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

A Jersey City cop's gun was stolen when his Woodbridge home was ransacked Wednesday afternoon, Woodbridge police said.

The burglar, described by witnesses as a dark-haired man in his mid-to-late 20s, entered the house about 1 p.m. and found keys to two safes in a closet, then opened one safe and removed what the cop called his "duty weapon" - a 45-caliber Glock 30 - according to the police report.

A 13-round clip and a holster were also taken from the safe.

The police are taking extra measures to retrieve the gun, but not because it belongs to a cop.

Officers perform more canvassing and investigations than usual when they know that a missing gun is involved, Woodbridge Lt. Dave Bobal said.

"We do extra work because a weapon was stolen, it doesn't matter if it was a cop's gun or a citizen's gun," he said.

Jersey City spokesman Stan Eason said the cop did not need a new weapon because all of the city's police officers have backup guns.

Woodbridge police refused to identify the Jersey City officer, and Eason declined to disclose his name, saying the incident is being handled by the Woodbridge police.

The boy parked the vehicle and started to run from cops, but he was caught by his sister at 182 Stegman St. and taken to the Juvenile Bureau, police said.

The boy apparently got into a couple of accidents with the stolen car, which had right rear body and front end damage.

Murder charge for lover
Saturday, October 25, 2008
By MICHAELANGELO CONTE
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

The ongoing investigation into the death of a Jersey City woman gunned down in her Heights home in August led to the arrest of her boyfriend on murder charges yesterday, officials said.

Leonardo "Lenny" Buccheri, 40, was arrested at 11 a.m. at his Webster Avenue home and charged with murder in the Aug. 10 death of Soveira Rojas, 29, said Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio. At the time, Buccheri told police that Rojas shot herself when they returned from a barbecue in Bergen County, DeFazio said.

When police arrived, Rojas was dead on the kitchen floor with a bullet wound to her chest. Police found Buccheri's "defaced" .45-caliber semiautomatic pistol, which fired the fatal round, and the next day he was charged with possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, possession of a defaced firearm, and other weapons offenses, officials said.

With the help of extensive ballistics tests on the gun by the State Police, the state Regional Medical Examiner's Office recently ruled Rojas' death a homicide, DeFazio said.

"Our allegation is that there was a prior dispute that day, a physical dispute, and he (Buccheri) was in possession of the gun and shot the victim once in the chest," DeFazio said.

After his arrest in August, Buccheri posted a $75,000 bail and was released. Buccheri was sentenced in May 1996 to a four-year term in state prison for burglary. He was released on parole in April 1997.

A defaced weapon is one which has had its serial number removed.

The surrender of a Jersey City man in connection with an investigation into street gang activity leaves only one man still being sought in the probe that has now led to 22 arrests, officials said.

Rashawn McFadden, 19, of Pearsall Avenue, went to his lawyer's office on Thursday and surrendered that afternoon to officers of the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office, officials said. McFadden was wanted on numerous drug counts, including distribution of cocaine within 1,000 feet of a school, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said.

The investigation focusing on 52 Hoover Street Gangsta Crips activities in the Booker T. Washington housing complex led to the arrest of 14 adults and six juveniles between Oct. 1 and Oct. 8, officials said. After that wave of arrests by local, county, state and federal law enforcement officers, four wanted men remained at large.

Travis Booker, 19, of Fremont Street in the Booker T. Washington housing complex, was arrested on Oct. 16 when police stormed a residence on Bramhall and Pacific avenues, police said.

On Oct. 13 Adrell Bennett, 19, of Wade Street, was shot dead when more than one man forced their way into an apartment at Arlington and Myrtle avenues.

Jamal O'Neal, 24, of the Booker T. Washington complex is now the only person charged in the investigation who remains on the lam, officials said. O'Neal is wanted on numerous drug counts including distribution of cocaine within 1,000 feet of a school and within 500 feet of public property, officials said.

McFadden's bail was set at $50,000 cash or bond and he was transported to the Hudson County jail in Kearny, DeFazio said.

Anyone with information on O'Neal's whereabouts is asked to call the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office's Gang Task Force at 201-915-1229.

A man police described as emotionally distressed stabbed his mother in their Jersey City home and then attacked cops with a baseball bat Thursday night, police reports said.

Darrell Laval Jr., 24, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault on a police officer, unlawful weapon possession and domestic violence, police said.

Officers arrived at the multi-family home on Wade Street at 9:20 p.m. and found Laval grappling with his mother in a bathtub, reports said. The cops took a kitchen knife with a 5-inch blade from Laval, but only after his mother suffered a punctured left shoulder and abrasions to the left side of her face, reports said.

Laval then turned on the officers, kicking and punching them, and then swung a baseball bat at them, reports said. Police said Laval yelled "Kill me, I want to die," before he was subdued.

His mother was treated for her injuries at the Jersey City Medical Center, according to the police report.

A 16-year-old Jersey City boy was shot as he ran from a group of youths who opened fire with at least two semiautomatic handguns in Greenville Wednesday night, officials said.

At about 7:41 p.m., Jersey City police officers were flagged down on Kennedy Boulevard and Virginia Avenue by NJ Transit cops who said they were near the Light Rail station at Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Randolph Avenue when they saw a group of teens running away and spotted the wounded boy, reports said.

Booker's arrest leaves only two people still wanted in the gang roundup that began on Oct. 1, police said.

Still being sought are Rashawn McFadden, 19, of Pearsall Avenue, and Jamal O'Neal, 24, of the Booker T. Washington complex.

Police stormed the home yesterday because they believed they were dealing with a hostage situation when Booker threatened to not let a woman and a baby out of the home, cops said.

Booker was wanted on charges including aggravated assault, numerous firearms offenses and a violation of probation in connection with the probe, which centers on the activity of "52 Hoover Street Gangsta Crips," which operates in the Booker T. Washington complex, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said.

He has been on probation since May after having been convicted of another aggravated assault charge and theft, DeFazio said, adding that he was sentenced to two concurrent three-year probation terms for the crimes.

Police tracked Booker to the residence, were he was with a woman and a baby. Police said they called the woman on the phone and "explained the situation because we wanted to be cautious of the baby and woman," said Capt. Chet Major.

"She confirmed he was there and the baby was there and he wasn't letting her out. He became agitated and started screaming at police from the window. Then we heard screaming inside and a struggle so we forced entry."

Booker was found in a third-floor bedroom and taken into custody after a scuffle by officers of the Warrant Squad, Gang Unit and Emergency Services Unit.

Another man who had been sought, Adrell Bennett, 19, of Wade Street, was shot to death on Monday.
