This used to happen all the time in the 90's and would never make the paper back then.

DETENTION! BOY, 12, STEALS TEACH'S CAR!
Saturday, October 25, 2008 By JACOB KAMARAS JOURNAL STAFF WRITER A 12-year-old Jersey City boy was charged Thursday afternoon with stealing his teacher's car at School 41, police said. Police said the boy stole the keys from the teacher and drove her 2004 Toyota Camry from the school, located at 25 Wilkinson Ave., to his Woodlawn Avenue home. He then changed clothes, took a joy ride and was eventually spotted by officers on Bergen Avenue, according to the police report. The boy parked the vehicle and started to run from cops, but he was caught by his sister at 182 Stegman St. and taken to the Juvenile Bureau, police said. The boy apparently got into a couple of accidents with the stolen car, which had right rear body and front end damage. The boy was charged with theft and released to his guardian, police said.
