It may seem trivial, until you multiply it out and realize that that quarter per ride increase just raised your yearly commute cost by ~$130.

FWIW, this is a violation of a city ordinance, if you want to point the police in this direction:

? 222-4. Audible burglar alarms. [Added 6-10-1992 by Ord. No. 92-051; amended 12-22-1992 by Ord. No. 92-192; 3-22-1995 by Ord. No. 95-020]permanent link to this piece of content

A.
No owner of a motor vehicle shall have in operation an audible burglar alarm thereon unless such burglar alarm shall be capable of and shall automatically terminate its operation within five (5) minutes of its being activated in the case of a motor vehicle. No audible burglar alarm on a motor vehicle shall be capable of being activated unless there is direct physical contact with that motor vehicle. Notwithstanding this provision, any member of the Police Department shall have the right to take such steps as may be necessary to disconnect any such alarm installed on a motor vehicle at any time during the period of its activation. [2]
B.
This section shall apply to any motor vehicle on which an audible burglar alarm has been installed when parked on a public highway or parking lot open to the public, and at any other time when the alarm is capable of being activated regardless of when such alarm was installed.
C.
Notwithstanding the provisions of Subsections A and B, any police officer may arrange for the removal of a motor vehicle from a public highway when an audible burglar alarm installed on such vehicle is activated in violation of this section. The owner of the vehicle shall be liable for all fees of removal, including but not limited to the fees for towing and for storage following removal of the vehicle.
D.
All audible burglar alarms which are purchased for use on motor vehicles kept or garaged in the City of Jersey City shall be registered with the Division of Traffic and Street Maintenance within twenty (20) days of purchase of an audible burglar alarm. Forms shall be provided by and obtained with the Division of Traffic and Street Maintenance. A one-time registration fee as provided in Chapter 160, Fees and Charges, shall be collected by the Division of Traffic and Street Maintenance, and a coded decal for identification shall be issued. The list of registered audible alarms shall be forwarded by the Division of Traffic and Street Maintenance to the Police Central Complaint Bureau. Registration shall include the name, address, including apartment number and telephone number of the owner of the vehicle, the make, model and, if applicable, the serial number of the alarm and such other information necessary for the enforcement of this Article. E.
Any person who violates any provision of this section or any rule promulgated hereunder shall be liable to a fine of not less than one hundred dollars ($100.) or more as provided in Chapter 1, General Provisions, ? 1-25

Does anyone have any idea why they decided to put up all those yellow chains on the WTC platform above the tracks? They're unnecessarily (from what I can tell) forcing the huge crowds into a very narrow corral, especially during the morning commute, and it doesn't appear that there's any logical reason for it.

LOL - I do this if I'm near 9th, 14th, or 23rd and on my way home to JSQ. I figure the 67% chance that the train will turn around and head to JSQ is worth the 33% risk that I'll end up on the wrong train when we get to 33rd, to turn around.

And to whoever wrote about the trains accelerating, I've definitely noticed the occasional WTC PATH train hit the gas on the hard left turn on the way into the station. It doesn't happen often, thankfully, but so help me I'm amazed that you don't hear of people breaking their wrist, holding onto the pole while the train is whipping around!

Funny you should say this - I tend to be libertarian on social issues, but not so much on fiscal policy (and as a result, end up getting into arguments with more hardcore libertarians all the time...). As I read this article, your point is exactly what I was thinking - if ever there's an argument against deregulation, this is it. Can you imagine if they could do this with other commodities - what would happen if they were able to control the wheat market? Sugar? Crude oil? Gold? Or, heaven forbid, pork bellies (bacon)???

25 feet to the Curb Parking Permitted
The population growth of Jersey City has become an increasingly difficult obstacle for
residential parking. It requires proper planning to insure that the City residents can
find parking with relative ease and accessibility. Recent New Jersey State legislation
recognizes parking issues in urban areas like Jersey City and has permitted
municipalities to eliminate the 25 feet from the curb restrictions that currently exist if
the City passes enabling legislation. Similar to recently enacted legislation in Hoboken,
Steven would enact this policy at the municipal level. It will be an opportunity to
increase residential parking by hundreds of spots for Jersey City residents.

So we shall see.

This is great! Hopefully, like I mentioned, if it's changed it's accompanied by painting the curbs yellow, to make it obvious.

25 feet is a pretty huge distance, if that's really the law! Still, you don't really have much of an argument if it is - as one of the other posters noted, you should count yourself lucky that you've gotten away with it for so long, otherwise. Unfortunately, seemingly arbitrary enforcement of the law or not, it is the law.

Having said that, IMO 25 feet is excessive. I would suggest it be reduced to 12, and the curbing from that point, around the intersection, be painted yellow so as to make it obvious that it isn't a parking zone. I personally would not have known about the 25-foot law if not for this thread.

This is great if you're hanging out around the WTC, but it's not so easy to time your arrival to the station when you aren't... and it's not like the area around the WTC is a hotbed of active nightlife for anyone to enjoy "another round" for a few minutes before going down to catch a train.

Hey, I've taken NJT in the past so have dealt with the inconvenience of late-night trains that only leave once an hour, and stop running at 2am - but it would be nice if the PATH were run more like a subway and less like a commuter line, late-night. I for one would be much more likely to take the train if it were more regular, and I'm sure a lot more people would be - but because it's so infrequent, I'll be damned if you'll catch me taking it that late again anytime soon.

It's like they're actually discouraging people from using their services, rather than seeking to serve us.

The A or C trains, from Brooklyn to Manhattan, run every 15 minutes in the middle of the night. The F runs every 8. Even the L, which can be brutal, comes every 20 minutes, late night.

The WTC PATH to Newark runs every 35 minutes, starting at 11:20 PM and ending at 5:45 AM.

If you've ever just missed a late-night WTC PATH train and had to stand on the platform for half an hour, like I did last night, you'd understand how drastic the difference between it and the NYC subway service is, if you can't get it from the huge difference in train schedules.

"Bragging" about the PATH service is ridiculous.

The one intersection where I'd LOVE to see a traffic camera is JFK and Pavonia Ave. I've stood and watched there as literally every single time the JFK southbound, turning onto Pavonia, left-hand turn signal turns red, someone if not multiple cars run the light, in front of oncoming traffic.

Every. Single. Time.

Especially the dollar vans...

My posts have nothing to do with blaming the victim. Rather, I'm using the instance to point out a situation that might have been far less tragic had she been wearing a helmet. It honors her to use her example and hope that people will learn from what happened, rather than have this re-occur because they make the same mistake.

Perhaps you missed my earlier post - I was hit and run by a car when I was 13, and end up with a skull fracture and severe concussion. I, too, was not wearing a helmet - but this was 30 years ago, when nobody used them (not for lack of education, but because they just weren't part of what most non-professional riders even considered). I, as I'm sure she would be had she survived, am now about as big a helmet advocate as you're gonna find. Live and learn - literally.

That having been said, I see a lot of things cyclists do that make me cringe. Almost every night I see cyclists on the road without any lights or reflective patches. Needless to say, most are not wearing helmets. The other thing that gets me is "salmoning" - people riding against, rather than with, the flow of traffic. Many of these people are under the mistaken impression that they'll be safer because they can see oncoming traffic and react accordingly. They're actually creating a hazard. People - neither drivers nor pedestrians crossing the street - are expecting them to be coming from that direction. Also, by riding against the flow, they're sharply cutting the time a driver has to react before impact. The difference may only be a second or two, but that's enough to mean life or death.

My thoughts exactly. From the article in the WSJ, "Police said Ms. Caicedo was riding the wrong way, traveling southbound in the northbound lane of Marin Boulevard. Mr. Usher said his wife was not wearing a bicycle helmet when she was hit."

The article doesn't mention if she was or wasn't, but please, if you're going to ride a bike, WEAR A HELMET! The link to her memorial site mentions that she died of traumatic brain damage.

While biking, I was hit by a car when I was 13 - and suffered a skull fracture. I wasn't wearing a helmet, but thank God I didn't end up with any permanent damage.

Your understanding is wrong. Try telling that to the residents of Bay Ridge and Sunset Park who now have no other options and are stuck with commutes of well over an hour to get to Manhattan now.

One of many articles about it -

The MTA will close the Montague tube, along with partial closures of the Greenpoint tube on the G train line between Brooklyn and Queens, in order to make repairs that would have taken years if done in the MTA?s normal weekend and nighttime work shifts, officials said.

The agency will post staff to monitor station crowding when the outage begins, expected in August, Mr. Bianco said. The R train will run on weekdays from Court Street south into the rest of Brooklyn, and from Whitehall Street north through Manhattan and Queens.

As I said, you can transfer at Court and Jay Streets, to one of 7 other lines that run from there into Manhattan. At most this transfer may add another 10 minutes to their commute - what part of my understanding was wrong? Unless you're referring people that would stay on for the Manhattan Rector or Cortland stops on the R (which no other train makes)...? The Wall St. 4 and 5 stop is just 2 blocks from Rector, and the Fulton 4/5 stop is about the same distance from Cortland - I'm not sure what's so bad here...? The only ones I can see that might have a beef would be those that would stay on the R to mid/uptown, and now will have to get off the R at Court, then take the 4/5 into Manhattan, walk the 2 blocks, and get back on the R - but even then, that's just 3 trains.

Regardless, at least there are viable alternatives, compared to the mess that we had to deal with when Sandy rendered the PATH useless.

My understanding is that the R will run in Brooklyn and in Manhattan, just not under the East River (so it won't connect the 2 boroughs). The 2, 3, 4, 5, A, C, and F trains are all in the BK Borough Hall/Jay St/Metrotech 2-block radius, so really, this isn't that bad an inconvenience - it just means a transfer and maybe a walk of a few blocks.

Re: Special Elections in N.J for U.S. Senator
#84
Home away from home
Home away from home

I'm actually surprised that any democrat has a problem with this... It would have been completely within his right to appoint a republican senator to replace him, until the 2014 election.

And as this article in the NY Times points out, the dems in the Senate often had to rely on Lautenberg's vote, very recently, to get laws passed - wouldn't you want to have the opportunity to get your guy in there (assuming a dem wins the special election) ASAP???

Even as politicians from both parties released statements praising Mr. Lautenberg, the machinations over his seat threatened to overshadow his death. So important was his reliably liberal vote that Democratic leaders asked him twice in recent weeks to return to Washington to vote despite his failing health.

Just last month, Mr. Lautenberg made a special trip to the Capitol to supply a crucial vote that prevented Mr. Obama?s nominee to lead the Environmental Protection Agency from being stalled indefinitely in committee. Republicans were threatening to boycott the vote to deny Democrats a quorum. Mr. Lautenberg agreed to come to provide the quorum.

In another memorable instance in April, his aides helped push him out onto the Senate floor in his wheelchair to cast much-needed ?yes? votes for a package of gun-control legislation, a cause he had long supported. Though the bills were ultimately defeated in a Republican-led filibuster, his presence that day served as a reminder of how the majority leader, Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, must scrape for almost every vote.

?The last thing Senator Reid can afford right now is to lose a reliable Democratic vote in a highly partisan Senate,? said Jim Manley, a former adviser to the majority leader who served in the Senate when the illnesses of Edward M. Kennedy and Robert C. Byrd caused problems for Democrats, who controlled even fewer seats.

Speed bumps aren't allowed in New Jersey. Since 2009, speed humps have been allowed, under certain conditions.

Got that? Google it if you don't believe me.

This is a matter of semantics. Per the DOT website:

"Speed hump" means one of several traffic calming measures which use forces of vertical acceleration to discourage speeding. For purposes of this chapter, speed humps means all vertical speed deflectors, including but not limited to, speed tables, raised crosswalks, raised intersections, and modified speed humps.

"Vertical speed deflector" means a raised area in the roadway pavement surface extending transversely across the travel way.

I've been to all 4 Home Depots mentioned in this thread (Secaucus, North Bergen, DT, and 440) and would say that if you're looking for the most helpful in-store staff, DT takes it. They're the least busy of the 4 stores and there are all kinds of people always standing around to help, at least any time I've been there.

Secaucus is the biggest because they cater to contractors. I'm pretty sure they also used to be open 24-hours, but not any longer.

The one in North Bergen is, in my opinion, the "nicest" of all of them, but not a whole lot different than the one on 440. The appeal of both of these locations, IMO, has already been mentioned - they're very close (if not right next to) Lowes.

Having said all of that, I haven't purchased appliances at any of them, so unfortunately can't advise on your specific purchase.

Edit - the Home Depot in Union (just off Route 78) has an amazing appliance selection. It's also a contractor-focused HD, and it's huge.
