I was driving, or I would have. Actually, I tried with my cellphone, but the light changed.

I was really pissed because there was a couple standing behind the truck waiting to cross and I couldn't see them at all until I passed them.

What makes you say they are fake? It is pretty common to see things like a white pickup truck with fire department plates parked on the striped lines outside the Lucky 7 bar, like I saw last night.

Why should they have to follow the rules?

I thought Hot and Toasty bagels were good, when they were fresh. The problem is, they usually didn't have enough in stock, and they weren't fresh. One of the problems with baking off premises.

Wonder Bagels still gets the nod from me for baking on premises.

I realize it is a chain, but part of my soul died when I saw that the store's name is New York Bagel Cafe. And whole grain rosemary-thyme bagel with sundried tomato artichoke hummus? And a Kona with rice milk? Whatever happened to a poppy seed bagel with a schmear and a cup of coffee? What is this world coming to?

However, to step back a bit, I am all for fierce competition in the bagel realm. I am glad they are open, and I can't wait to try this place and give my verdict. I probably won't be ordering an oat-apple-mint bagel with Nutella and cr?me fra?che, I'll probably stick to the regular. . . .

I don't think it's a coincidence that this "leadership" moment is coming at the same time the JCIA/DPW merger is being considered. Survival of the JCIA is essential to the Cunningham power base - many of the higher ranking folks in that agency are her people; all the Dabneys, Dublin, et al. Fulop is for eliminating the JCIA - which is the more efficient and cost-effective option. The more he goes after things like the JCIA, the JCPA, free health care for family, er board members who work six hours a year, abuse of city-provided cars, the louder the squawking is by those who have been benefiting.

Yup, I noticed that too. The timing of this "article" is interesting. I am not entirely sure of the substance of the complaint here. . . .

Re: Port Authority police car, JCMC ambulance in collision in Downtown Jersey City

From the pictures, this is to me what it looks like happened:

PA vehicle was traveling on 8th street, went through intersection, and was hit by ambulance, probably in right rear quarter panel to spin the SUV around and also get it up on two wheels, and then over.

Ambulances are heavy vehicles, and besides, sometimes it doesn't take much to tip a high-center-mass vehicle over. I once saw a cargo van get pushed over by a Honda Accord at low speeds (below 25 mph). So, the ambulance could have been driven slowly and still tipped the SUV over.

Did the PA vehicle stop at the stop sign? Well, to get that much farther down the road from the intersection after getting hit, he would have had to have had some significant forward momentum. Maybe he went through the stop sign in one of those typical high-speed rolling stops I see pretty often. On the other hand, maybe he stopped, saw the intersection clear, and then proceeded through, only to see an ambulance barreling down at him at high speed; ambulance hits brakes (folks heard squeals), SUV hits gas to get out of the way, increasing his forward momentum, but still there is a collision.

So, it is a long-winded way of saying that either party could have been at fault. So don't jump to any conclusions.

The only thing I think is certain is that at least one of them did something wrong. . . .

Two weeks ago in Beverly Hills Downtown JC, there was one attempted (Shop Rite) and one successful (Pavonia PATH station) carjacking at gunpoint, both involving Mercedes SUVs. They were of the "just walk up and wave a gun" variety.

While I am glad that the JJ is covering these stories, I have to laugh at this article:

Quote:

JerseyCityNj wrote:
Most carjackings in Hudson County, Jersey City involve threats with weapons that can't be ignored

Published: Tuesday, March 27, 2012, 3:00 AM
By Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal

Several schemes are employed in carjackings, and being alert is the best defense, officials say.

In one scheme, the attacker bumps the victim?s vehicle and when the victim gets out to assess damage and exchange information, their vehicle is taken.

In another scenario, an accident is staged that can include a simulated injury. When the victim stops to assist, their vehicle is taken, officials say.

Sometimes the driver of the vehicle behind the victim gets the victim?s attention and indicates there is a problem with the victim?s car. The victim pulls over and their vehicle is taken.

Finally, sometimes carjackers follow the victim and when the victim pulls into a driveway, the carjackers pull up, trap the vehicle and take it.

In the Jersey City area, most carjackings simply involve a carjacker approaching a vehicle and threatening to use a weapon if the driver does not comply.

All that information about how other folks carjack really is beside the point if the MO in JC is simply to walk up and wave a gun. But then I guess that would be a really short article.

Thirty Jersey City Heights schoolkids win grand prize trip to Disney World and $10,000 for their Reservoir Project

Quote:
Seventh-graders at the Christa McAuliffe School 28 in Jersey City Heights were expecting an assembly about Earth Day at 10 a.m. yesterday.

Instead, Mickey Mouse took to the stage and told them they had won an all-expense-paid trip to Disney World in Orlando, Fla.

The 30 students and their teachers are the grand-prize winners of the Disney Planet Challenge, a national contest that focuses on environmental and conservation issues. . . .

The good news is that they won, and they are going to Disney World. The bad news is their proposal probably doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of succeeding. Maybe this prize will elevate the issue enough so that the reservoir will be preserved as a resource instead of turned into just another city block. . . .

There is a very active soccer community in JC, but unfortunately, there aren't many places to play.

There is a very nice field near Grand and Merseles, near the Turnpike entrance downtown, but for some reason it is for Hans Soliz league teams only.

The other youth teams I know of play at the athletic fields at Caven Point. Sadly, while the football, baseball, and softball fields are well-maintained, the soccer field is unlit and poorly maintained, so playing there can be a real challenge--there are huge ruts in the field in front of the goals and in the center of the field. It's really an embarrassing field to play on. I believe those athletic fields are maintained by the Jersey City Board of Education.

Oh, and I went to see Pele play for the Cosmos way back when--good times! They are bringing back a team under the Cosmos name soon, I believe.

So you say, Amy. So you say.

But really, the man works in JC. He "reverse commutes" on the PATH and spends most of his waking hours here so that he can take money out of the pockets of our unconscious injured citizens to maintain his lavish, water-tower-strewn lifestyle in another location. He may not sleep here, but he is very much JC. He should run for city government.

Yeah, it sounds nice, but can you name any mega-developments that have resulted in a "classic neighborhood"? What does that even mean? Sounds like developer smoke being blown up approval board's ass.

I would like to follow this and see what Carl Goldberg's vision of a "classic neighborhood" turns out to be. Unusable green space, like that done by LeFrak? A high-end grocer, with Manhattan prices? A spa?

Neighborhoods are built by the people who live there, not by the fiat of some development company. I wonder how the folks in Paulus Hook feel about not being a neighborhood, instead being only an "interesting area."
