Re: Sweets 4 miles

Joel: if you have to ask that question, you haven't been around JCLIST long enough! Heights is our very own Archie Bunker, except his vitriol is sadder and scarier because he is a REAL person, and not a TV character.

I will say this, though: he toned it down considerably about two years ago. But, in recent months, he has started to revert to his previous self.

PS - Another reason why your labor of love (Nextdoor Lafayette) is such a breath of fresh air when compared to some of the nonsense in some of the JCList threads.

Just because it has soy sauce, it doesn't mean it is not gluten-free. You can get gluten-free soy sauce (Kikkoman has a version, and Tamari is normally gluten-free). Perhaps the kitchen can accommodate a request to use Tamari in place of whatever soy sauce they normally use. I find many restaurants (definitely most sushi places) keep Tamari on hand (even our local gem, Honshu, will bring it to your table if you ask for it) so I see no reason why this place wouldn't do the same.

Actually, devilsadvocate has a valid point: if LHS reduced hours/services available to the city, then the city would be abdicating their fiduciary responsibility (to the city taxpayers) by not adjusting what they pay to LHS for impoundment services.

Re: Anyone bring their pets to MetroVet?
Home away from home
Home away from home

I took my cat, whom I rescued off the streets and has several issues, and the doctor (and staff) were SUPER professional, efficient and even affectionate in the way they dealt with her. The cat was seen by Dr. Lauren Stoltze, whom I believe is not part of the permanent staff and "floats" in between their two locations. She was very gracious and really a pleasure to deal with. It was my first time there, and I will likely keep going back whenever I need any help or services for my dog and cat.

In addition to the veterinary practice, they also have a boarding/daycare business that is very competitively priced. I can't say much about that service, since I have never used it, but I did see/notice that the entire facility is wired with CCTV cameras, which are connected to monitors throughout the lobby. There are additional monitors facing to the outside (visible from outside as you walk along the sidewalks) which I believe is done to inspire confidence on potential customers that employees are watched as they interact with animals, and abuse or neglect is not likely to happen, as anyone walking by can see what is going on at any time.

In any case, based on my two visit experience, I would give them a full thumbs up. I wouldn't hesitate to go back.

Went once and thought it was stuffy and overrated. I've had MUCH BETTER Italian food elsewhere. It's disappointing to see a long-standing business go under, but given the subpar food, and the fact the place was not even half full on a Friday or Saturday evening (can't remember which at the moment) I have to say this is not at all unexpected.

Did you read the article?? The cops DID NOT know he owned, or had, an assault rifle, or other weapons. Nor was it even visible in plain sight. They only learned about the weapons AFTER they illegally entered and searched the apartment. This is STILL a democratic republic of principles, and undue, arbitrary searches without warrants are illegal. If they had any real concern, they could have asked the person to step outside, secure him, and then wait for a warrant to be issued for them to enter and search the apartment.

So, the dramatic increase in property value is NOT reward enough for people who "toughed" it out during years prior to gentrification? This sort of classist/populist policy is just wrong. And, I find it extremely disappointing/hypocritical that poor and lower middle class folks will moan about tax breaks for the rich(er), or any other policy perceived to favor someone better off than them, but will gladly turn a blind eye and accept similar policies directed at them. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. Right?

Joel, definitely a member of the NextDoor Lafayette group! I am just not very active over there, but do read the posts and participate from time to time. You have done a great job with it, btw. Serious kudos for your patience and enthusiasm. I joined before we hit 50 members, and I see it is now 125!

I live in the Foundry. I can guarantee you that we DID NOT see any flooding. The water didn't even reach the Park & Ride lot. I live in one of the inner courtyard units (the ones past the lobby) and during heavy precipitation we do get some water accumulation (mostly because the drain covers are often clogged with lint, dirt, dust, etc) but nothing that would actually seep into units. I don't know much about the units along Monitor Street, but I don't think I would like to live in one of them because the lack of abundant natural light would bother me. As for other units, most of them are rather spacious and the rent levels are very enticing.

Re: AIR DUCT CLEANING
Home away from home
Home away from home

Cleaning out the vents can be very beneficial, but also tricky. I have seen many contractors that simply open up any vent access location (such as the dryer front plate) and stick what amounts to a leaf blower into the venting area. The trick is that it has to feed to the outside vent. The strong air current is supposed to "push" out any blockage, or other lingering stuff. It's amazing the amount of lint that accumulates inside vent ducts! The only thing that is a concern to me when resorting to this simple approach is that lint can sometimes stick to the walls of vents, so it may not completely clear the ducts. I have also seen contractors that have special "brushes" that they stick into ducts and push them in. This is supposed to ensure nothing is left behind, but it is more time consuming (so, more expensive) and I don't know how easy it is to use this system in smaller spaces where ducts may twist and turn more.

The weekend closures just started, so of course no discernible change in housing stock or prices will be felt for some time.

As for comparing weekend disruptions in Brooklyn to JC, that is apples to oranges: in Brooklyn you had/have other alternatives (buses, medallion taxis, etc.) while in our situation in JC, there are no other alternatives for getting into Manhattan.

Re: For those who are having issues with Netflix over FIOS
Home away from home
Home away from home

You are confusing treating all traffic equally and handling of excessive traffic. The former is about not discriminating between traffic from one source and another. The latter is about fairness. ISPs have generally been open to allowing any and all traffic to traverse their networks on the belief that things even out in the end. So, FiOS customers may generate a lot of load and traffic on networks belonging to other ISPs (say Comcast, TWC, etc) and the same holds true for customers of other ISPs. So, the loads ISPs carry and generate for each other are usually equal, more or less. But, what we are talking about here is completely different: Netflix has data centers, but they are not large data carries open to other ISPs. As such, they are generating loads but not carrying any for other ISPs. It is truly an imbalance and they CHOSE to make it worse by increasing the data they generate and push.

As for your company generating a lot of traffic/data, they already pay for that. Every company pays for pushing out data by subscribing to specific bandwidth limits when contracting their Internet service.

Re: For those who are having issues with Netflix over FIOS

JCMan8, you seem to have an axe to grind with Verizon. No one has confirmed what Netflix has agreed to pay Comcast. And, despite your claims, it is NOT an extortion. Simply put, Netflix accounts for the vast majority of traffic traversing the networks of most ISPs. That is a VERY COSTLY proposition. These ISPs are being "forced" to provide a "road" for the Netflix traffic and you don't think they are entitled to some sort of compensation for that? Don't you think that the ISPs are entitled to some sort of compensation for their continuous need to upgrade and improve their networks to be able to handle the additional loads being exerted?

If anything, I think Netflix was the offending party here: they CHOSE to start streaming in a format that requires a lot more bandwidth, and did so fully aware of the consequences (larger streams require more bandwidth, which can lead to performance issues for some customers.) They gambled (but lost) on the assumption that the ISPs would cave to their "option" of storing content within data centers by using Netflix's own content delivery network and appliances. In the game of chicken that ensued, Netflix blinked first. It's that simple.

Re: Running in Snowy JC: Waterfront or LSP?
Home away from home
Home away from home

I am currently out of town, so my opinion is based on past experience. During winter months, I have always found LSP to be well plowed after all snowfalls. The last time I went running in LSP a few weeks ago (about two or three days after some heavy snow) the paths along Freedom Way and Audrey Zapp were perfectly clear, with occasional icy patches (which is to be expected as snow/ice melts and refreezes). Overall, my vote for a "safe" run in JC during Winter is definitely LSP.

Re: Public Meeting with Port Authority Reps: 2/18/14 @ 7:30pm
Home away from home
Home away from home

What I find particularly puzzling in this entire mess of (almost) unannounced weekend shutdowns in the NWK/WTC service is that very few (if anyone) seems to have reached the logical extension/conclusion of what is ahead: if NWK/WTC had to be shut down for "federally-mandated" safety improvements, it is then logical that the same will be true for the JSQ/33rd line. So, does that mean that the JSQ/33rd St line will be shut down in 2015? Or, 2016? Because, at some point, it will have to be shut down to carry out the same improvements, right?

The meeting summary provided by FakeGreenDress seems to confirm that when (s)he points out that the PA representative mentioned as much towards the end of the meeting.

Quite honestly, this whole mess with the PATH (and the assumption on my part that the same will happen in 2015 with the JSQ lines) have me rethinking my choice of living here. As much as enjoy living in JC, and it's been a fun 8 years, stuff like this is very disheartening and may just be a deal breaker.

Re: Jersey City Sees Stardom for Loew's
Home away from home
Home away from home

Why take opposite sides as adversaries? Truth be told, despite the impassioned pleas of some here, I don't think that FOL has done that great of a job with the Loew's.

I have attended some of their movie screenings, and I am always surprised by how sparingly they are attended. Some movies are REALLY great, and totally worth watching in a grand, old theater. Simply put, FOL does a VERY POOR job of advertising these events. With the exception of the Halloween events, I have never seen them post information about upcoming screenings here in JCLIST (a widely read site by the typical person that would likely support the Loew's) or other JC-related websites. Perhaps I have missed them, but I check JCLIST almost daily. Posting here about a screening would cost them nothing, and may lead to many more seats getting filled. It wouldn't take more than a few minutes to do so!

For example, how many of you knew that Jaws was shown two weeks ago, on February 1? That would have been a great flick to catch on a big screen!

It's a shame. They mean well, but they are disorganized and, by extension, ineffective. Kudos to them for preventing the theater from being torn down, and to the volunteers who graciously staff the events, but more can (and, should) be done.

Not sure about liability, but while walking in the city yesterday, I saw many work crews shoveling and clearing the many flat-roofed scaffoldings that are part of the construction sites that face onto sidewalks. I imagine they were being proactive. Frozen rain and snow can be INCREDIBLY heavy.

And, do you not see the disconnect in what you are saying?? If someone is jumping off a bridge, they HAVE to get there first. That's not an impulse! That was a calculated decision, which involved heading somewhere, actually getting there, and then walking to a point where you can jump off. How is that an impulse?

Stop with the non-sense. How did our parents manage to live long enough to have us? Or, our grandparents?? It wasn't because they were coddled and protected from every imaginable threat or risk.

Whatever happened to common sense? If someone wants to jump to his/her death, they will find a way. Stop with the nanny state, knee-jerk reactions.

Well, the truth comes out, finally. The recent slower performance of Netflix is actually their [Netflix's] own fault. In a bid to force ISPs into adopting their proprietary technology called Open Connect, they have implemented Super HD streams across all ISPs. These streams are more data intensive and only suitable for incredibly large pipes (Google Fiber, for example) or for regular networks that have implemented Netflix's Open Connect network and appliances.

I have taken Uber (the UberX service) from Newark to Bergen Lafayette (The Foundry) and it was $26, via the Turnpike. Remember that Uber charges not just per mile, but also delays/time. So the $2 or $3 dollars in the turnpike might be offset (or, made worse, depending on time and traffic) based on which route you prefer.

Personally, I thought it was GREAT. Definitely better than the previous car service I had used (USA Taxi) and VERY clean cars. Very amiable driver, too.

Re: Maternity department in hospitals near JC area

I have great things to say about Hackensack University Medical Center. It is an incredible hospital, with great staff and an excellent neonatal unit.

Having said that, I wouldn't recommend birthing there if you reside in JC. Even if you own a car, and have it parked at your front door, a drive out to Hackensack UMC will take at least 30 minutes (without traffic) and possibly much more if you encounter traffic and/or detours.

At the time my daughter was born, we resided down the street right on Prospect Avenue, so it was a no-brainer. If we had resided in JC, we probably would have chosen a different hospital.

Hmm. I am not sure how to feel about this one. You could argue that states with a really high number of convicted public officials are actually LESS corrupt, as it shows a willingness to NOT put up with the corruption, and prosecute those suspected of fraud and/or graft.

Re: Total House Gut
Home away from home
Home away from home

Therein lies the issue of tax inequality in JC. Those who have lived here longer are unfairly benefited to the detriment of the more recent arrivals. Property taxes are supposed to be a "fairer", less biased, way to impose tax on the population. After all, it is supposed to be a fixed rate applied to all within a community, so if you want the luxury of a larger home, you pay more, and if you can do with less, you pay less. Of course, some old timers would have you believe that their tax share shouldn't change at all and rail against the reveal, which was illegally suspended.

For the record - I am not a homeowner, so I don't have a lot of skin in this game. I have considered purchasing a property but just can't accept the absurd taxes levied here.
