Not sure about liability, but while walking in the city yesterday, I saw many work crews shoveling and clearing the many flat-roofed scaffoldings that are part of the construction sites that face onto sidewalks. I imagine they were being proactive. Frozen rain and snow can be INCREDIBLY heavy.

I have had concerns over mine due to the fact that the previous snows really didn't melt. One more storm and I will probably start shoveling off the roofs.

At least we are going to get a warm up next week. Hopefully most of the snow will melt away.

Are landlords required to shovel flat roofs?

Ron Zeitlinger/The Jersey Journal

A 100 by 100-foot section of a Verizon garage in the Greenville section of Jersey City collapsed today, possibly from the weight of snow from recent storms and three workers suffered minor injuries.
As much as 12 inches of snow fell in Jersey City this morning, and that coupled with snow accumulated from other storms may have played a role in the collapse at 160 Pamrapo Ave., near Kennedy Boulevard and the Bayonne border.

Police at the scene said Verizon trucks are stored and repaired at the garage and there are company trucks under the rubble. Three employees in the garage at the time refused medical attention, police at the scene said.

Jersey City police, firefighters and representatives from the city's Office of Emergency Management responded to the scene.

Verizon officials could not be reached for more information. Details on the incident were not immediately available from Jersey City officials.
