I saw that the other day and was surprised that city inspectors allow scissor trusses as support beams. I am not totally sure of the long term durability of this type of support as it is being utilized in this structure and have only seen them in wood frame homes from the Civil War era.

The old beams in the homes in which I did see them were in good shape, but the beams were hewed by hand and were quite thick.

Hmm... 2 x 4's separated and supported by 2 x 2's... maybe the architectural firm of Moe, Larry, Curly and Associates designed it.

David

I'm sure that you know the year that your grandparents passed away. Graves before 1900 are generally located along the back fence, near the crypt, or near the railroad tracks. Prominent families are along the three center lanes extending from the buildings along Waldo Avenue to the cemetery driveway (prominent in that the family plots and headstones are massive).

I grew up near the area and have several family members buried there including my great grandparents and father. I need to visit my dad's grave soon and wouldn't mind helping you find family members. You could also walk around Saturday morning when volunteers are cleaning the cemetery.

I agree with the poster that mentioned that it would take less than an hour or so to walk around the cemetery. Bring a machete, work gloves, wear long pants, and pm me if you wish (my avatar makes this a bit creepy).

I LIVE on Manila and don't see any Filipinos around here.

In the late 70's early 80's, part of Grove was renamed to honor or acknowledge the growing and vibrant Filipino community. I was pretty young but remember other groups that had a longer history in Jersey City being very upset because it was considered a political move to garner support among Filipinos.

A few years later, Marin Boulevard was named to acknowledge the Puerto Rican community in the downtown section.

Not many people know that Christopher Columbus Drive used to be Railroad Avenue before the railroad trestle was torn down in the early 1960's.

Perhaps Grove should have been subtitled with "Manila Avenue" to prevent confusion like 6th Avenue (Avenue of the Americas). Rather than renaming Newark Avenue, there are signs acknowledging "little India," the vibrant Indian business area.

OH YEAH, weirdest street names: DICK Street behind Number 11 School and WALDO Avenue (named after Samuel Waldo - prominent JC resident in the 1860's)... I suppose Waldo was cool a hundred forty years ago.

I have worked on a few of these cellars before. Dehumidifiers are a good solution, but a permanent solution is circulation. Is there space in your laundry room to install an exhaust and intake fan? Can the space be opened up more to allow air to circulate? Is there a flooding problem in the space?

Also, be mindful of mold in this kind of environment. It's really important that you get this space dry.

Hearing on closed SPCA reveals board ignorant on finances
by Paul Koepp
Thursday July 31, 2008, 2:06 PM

The people in charge of a shuttered Jersey City animal shelter know very little about its finances.

That startling admission was made in court today by Jeff Edelman, attorney for the Hudson County District Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which was ordered closed in April by Hudson County Chancery Judge Thomas Olivieri after several failed inspections.

Edelman told Olivieri that the person who probably has the most information about the shelter is Diana Jeffrey, the attorney for Hudson Animal Advocates, who has subpoenaed financial records and called for a "forensic accounting."

Jeffrey said that while she has some records from the last five years, "There is a substantial amount of money missing from 2001 to 2003."

Former HCSPCA President Hector Carbajales withdrew almost $12,000 from the shelter's bank account in April.

Olivieri has appointed the Liberty Humane Society as temporary receiver for the HCSPCA. The judge will hold a conference September 15 with lawyers for all parties interested in the shelter's ultimate fate.

The day after the NJ State SPCA inspected the HCSPCA, three animals were pulled because they required immediate medical attention.

The NJ State SPCA is liable. Their inspector gave the HCSPCA a clean inspection despite three weeks worth of feces discovered the next day.

THESE WERE THEIR ANIMALS and were at the HCSPCA when the NJ State SPCA inspected:

First photo: feces in cage

Second photo: Winston emaciated (now missing and presumed dead)

If you can get a ride into Secaucus (10 - 15 minutes away), I recommend Dr. Hatch. Dr. Hatch saved my dog's life, pure and simple. He combines a holistic approach to modern medicine and was so concerned with my pet's pain management after a severe mauling.

His prices are very fair in an area where prices prohibit many people from getting their pets proper preventative care. The front desk people are sweet and attentive to all patients and their owners in the waiting room.

Teens (at least two were females and two were males - Hispanic) threw bottles in the middle of third street between Jersey and Erie and were wearing white t-shirts. Anyone else on third street see this?

the focus of the bill should be crime... this bill is a waste of money.

If one really wants to stem gun violence, New Jersey should sue Virgina, Georgia, and Pennsylvania each time a handgun is linked to sales in those states. Likewise, families and victims of gun violence should sue those states whose laws make it easy to buy in bulk and sell to criminal elements in New Jersey.

New Jersey is focusing on its own citizens who follow strict guidelines.

New Jersey demonizes legal handgun owners who go through some of the most stringent background checks that include fingerprinting, photographs, and in some communities, letters from neighbors to "confirm" one's good character.

Legal handgun owners are not robbing the local liquor store... repeat offenders are, but let's waste time and money on a bill that won't do squat.

I am no fan of Ms. Richardson, but her point that editorials unfairly focus on the perception of "leadership" or "lack of it" in the black community in Jersey City has some merit.

When an African-American politician is caught with his or her hand in the cookie jar, it is a lack of leadership while other groups' leaders are labeled as corrupt or unethical. The second largest community in Jersey City are Latinos, but the JJ isn't asking where is the new Jos? Luis Alberto Mu?oz Mar?n for the Puerto Rican community after Judge Wanda Molina's scandal?

Mayor Booker and Obama are honorable politicians (whether you agree with them or not) who "happen to be African-American."

Ms. Richardson seems to ask the JJ editorial board and its readership to call it what it is ... corruption and cronyism.

Re: What's going on with all the white t-shirts?

It started out being a neutral alternative to colors, but rappers have made the shirts popular in recent years. In short, white tee shirts offer young people an alternative to the potentially confrontational blue, yellow, red or gray T-shirts associated with different gangs.

An ode to the shirt by the rap group Dem Franchize Boyz sums up the feeling held deep within the movement of the crisp, clean white tee wearers:

"I slang in my White Tee. I bang in my White Tee. All in the club spitting game in my White Tee. I bling in my White Tee."

Yeah, those lyrics took a lot of thought.

I can't believe that those XXXL shirts go for 40 dollars.

There is another new renov building on Waldo and Newark that Im looking which is a 7-9 minute walk to the Path, so that is my other option. Also I have always found street parking available on Waldo Ave. with no problem.

My parents have lived on Waldo Avenue for 48 years, and I grew up there. Parking is not too much of a problem and the neighborhood is changing rapidly. I like the interior renovation job that is nearly completed on the corner of Waldo and Newark Avenues. Again, there is plenty of public transportation, and it is a short walk to the PATH.

Currently, the largest building on Waldo Avenue (96 Waldo) is for sale, and I believe that it will go condo in the next few years. This location is close to the Downtown section, and there is a grocery and liquor store one block away on Chestnut. The closest supermarkets are the PATHMARK on Grand Street and the SHOPRITE on Manila Avenue which are just a 5 minute drive.

Also, there is a very active neighborhood association
(Hilltop Neighborhood Association) headed by Richard Boggiano (former police officer and mayoral candidate) that meets at the St. Joseph's grammar school basement.

Because I grew up there, I may be a bit biased, but the area has a lot of potential. A new 12 story building is being built on the other side of the Jersey City Cemetery and Turnpike extension, and there are plans for the vacant lot across the street from the building that you are looking into. It can be a bit noisy because Newark Avenue is so busy, but there aren't many parts of Jersey City that are very quiet and secluded anyway.

2520 Kennedy Blvd might be cheaper than the building on Waldo Avenue, and it is closer to a public park. Like I wrote, my parents still live close by, and my sister lives 2 blocks from the new building. Send any questions to my inbox via this site.

A terrorist probably wouldn't be taking pictures will a cell phone camera and Google Earth gives a pretty clear picture of the area but not in real time.

I'm glad that you weren't hassled much but taking pictures at the tolls seems out of the norm.

I hope that signs do not go up reading that it is illegal to photograph toll booths, but understand that it may draw the attention of police. I think that if I were driving by you at the time, I would have felt uneasy.

I don't like that I feel this way.

Re: 2520 Kennedy Blvd

Parking is terrible in that area.

Auto thefts and break-ins happen frequently, but the area has been improving slowly over the last 10 years. There are many charming old apartment buildings and houses in the area.

Bergen Avenue is to the east (some bodegas, take out food, and liquor stores), so you will need to drive to the supermarkets on Route 440 or downtown. Westside Avenue is to the west and again, there are bodegas, liquors stores, and a few Chinese restaurants close to 2520 Kennedy Blvd. The location is a few blocks from the Westside Animal Hospital which is convenient if you have pets.

Lincoln Park is a block away, and there is a dog run on the 440 side of the park if you have a dog. Also, the county has made many improvements (running track and racket ball) to the park.

There is good public transportation in the area and the walk to the Journal Square PATH is about 15 minutes.

It's good and bad. There are some quality of life concerns, but the location is convenient to public transportation and Lincoln Park.

Re: 10 Ugly Buildings JERSEY CITY Would Be Better Off Without

Quote:
Just curious, what would you approve of/like better? Some of the houses in Greenville/Heights etc that are going up are by far a vast improvement from what was there. Everyone can't build/live in historic brownstones.

Absolutely, not everyone lives in historic brownstones or even the charming homes in the Greenville, Bergen, and Lafayette sections of Jersey City. I sure can't afford a brownstone.

As someone involved in the renovation business (lifelong Jersey City resident - and product of its public schools), there are ways to integrate styles of homes into a neighborhood without having to break the bank.

The homes that are highlighted in my post are built cheaply (substandard materials) and erected without regard of what styles are prevalent in any given neighborhood. Lazy architects can easily adjust a facade's style. I do it all the time when I talk people out of having the "track home" look. It's amazing how a "track home" can have the look of a classic American Four Square for the same amount of money.

Likewise, brownstones in this city have been massacred by homeowners who have no sense of style but want their structures refaced and modernized without regard of the neighborhood's architectural theme.

How often have "investors" taken a beautiful one family home on Bentley, Gifford, Belmont, Duncan, or Kensington Avenues and installed vinyl siding, ripped out the turret rooms and converted it into a 4 family? Enough already-- it's about preservation.

I love this city... I just want people to get bang for the buck and make their homes and neighborhoods more appealing which translates into better value and charm for the entire city.

The city did an admirable job when building some of the low and middle income structures in the Lafayette and Currie Woods neighborhoods. The homes are charming, and there is real evidence of dignity as seen in the wonderful gardens that the homeowners and rental occupants maintain.
