This is the system that the DC Metro uses. It is quite cumbersome for travelers not from the area.

It wouldn't make sense for the full PATH system, since it's not zoned like DC's. But the Airtrain has always been $5, so there's another fare gate there anyway.

I got the impression (maybe from another thread here, or one elsewhere?) that this is only happening at all because of a deal the Port Authority made with United Airlines -- they added flights to the Atlantic City airport, which the PA has taken over, and in exchange they get the PATH train to EWR.

That's exactly right! You can ride your bike in NYC to the PATH, hop off the train in JC, hop on another bike and continue your trip.
Without having to take your own bike on the PATH or leave it locked up outside the station.

Exactly. Same goes for the ferry.

Is NY Waterway running extra service today? Say, going to Midtown/39th during the day? I can't find any info to that effect.

Good, it looked like a dump. The more of these crappy places close up shop the better. Chains or not, anything will be an improvement.

Always liked their hand-painted sign, actually. But the one time we went in to look at furniture they just totally ignored us, even when we said hi.

If nothing else, it would be a great backup plan for when the seemingly daily signal problems on the PATH mean there's no other way to get home.

Try up to $1800, per one of the articles posted the last time this was in the news. You can still get a real apartment in the neighborhood for that price.

If so, people won't rent there then right?

Or other apartments in the neighborhood will jump in rent.

Feel like I need to stand up for CH Martin here. They sell cheap stuff cheap. Maybe more foot traffic will mean more people checking out the places like that and realizing they don't need to go all the way to Bed Bath & Beyond to spend 5x as much for only slightly better quality.

The A-1 guys put up signs on their old space that said you can find them across the street at Stella's. The Vegas Grill folks tore those signs down and put up their own that said "Hey, go to our place instead!" Then those were torn down and replaced with the "A-1 guys are at Stella's" signs. Can't wait to see what those are replaced with...

Has there ever been a reported crime of any kind on that bridge? I've never felt unsafe there even pretty late at night -- there's a surprising amount of foot traffic to and from the marina, not to mention park security. Think the worst you might run into is a parked car with people getting busy inside.

The land off Aetna street really could use remediation, but there's no reason to think that would happen as part of this construction project -- I assume Jersey Ave would just continue straight ahead.

One thing that really bums me out about this is that there's a ton of wildlife living in that little inlet. What are the odds their habitat will survive the construction intact?

Walk down to the footbridge one evening, and depending on the time of year you may see great blue herons, egrets, swans, black-crowned night herons, brants, killdeer, swallows and various ducks and geese. I've also seen rabbits, raccoons (there's a family with five young there now), skunks, opossums and other furry creatures, though I'd assume they're less dependent on the fishing than the birds are.

Hard to imagine any of them sticking around through 24-hour traffic...

I'm not actually seeing any plans mentioned to separate the different groups? But if that's what they're doing it's also about student safety. Most colleges are pretty strict with security for dorms. And it's a Catholic school, so there are probably also lots of rules like limits on overnight guests that would be hard to enforce in a mixed-use building.

Re: Bloomberg: path 3x less efficient than NYC subway

As much as I think the PA has major problems and wastes a ton of money in general, there's a lot of questionable math is this article. The "cost per hour of service" figure covers different things for different systems, so it's comparing apples and oranges.

I have a whole bunch of questions:
-- NJT and SEPTA don't own the rails they run on, and the article mentions the fee they pay to use them is much lower than the cost of maintaining the rails themselves. So how much is Amtrak subsidizing them?

-- Is the MTA able to spend less on security because it's located within a single police jurisdiction and doesn't need as many of its own cops? Are their security costs really much higher than they look on paper because they're factored into the NYPD budget? Does NJT benefit from Amtrak cops? Do other PA properties like the WTC benefit from the PATH security budget?

-- How much of that cost-per-hour figure is paying off things like the new train cars, which in PATH's case were desperately needed (PATH previously had the oldest rolling stock in the nation)? How are capital projects factored into the other systems' calculations?

-- The costs of FRA regulatory requirements seem like they would add up much more quickly when applied to a rapid-transit system than intercity commuter rail. They wouldn't go away even if the MTA took over. How much of the cost difference is due to these regulations?

I want to see figures for the real total cost of an hour on each system across all parties, not just what its main operator's spending. If the PATH really is this much of an outlier, that would make it easier to see where the PA's funneling money unnecessarily (as opposed to covering the entirety of something that's a shared cost for the other guys). And if the numbers are actually much closer together, it would make it harder for the PA to argue that they have to cut overnight service for "cost reasons."

At least Fulop might be able to be a little more vocal now that he's gone ahead and sued the PA over unpaid taxes. The WTC weekend shutdown happened while he was negotiating in advance of that lawsuit.

That pic is from an article about how the city's turnaround after the 80's recession started when they filled in some of that empty space with human-scale development.

Also: it's still not a place I'd want to live. A neighborhood is about more than just having a job.

How about, instead of building more parking lots, the city builds a clear, easy to understand webpage that explains how to get to this building from different parts of the city via transit? That would certainly save a lot of tax dollars. We've actually been laying the groundwork for building maps like this through OpenJC. Here's what happens when you make a city all about cars: https://twitter.com/woolie/status/497218754858602496/photo/1 Plenty of people here have them but use them only occasionally -- they prefer to walk, bike or take mass transit whenever possible, but have a job or family located somewhere that requires driving. Nothing about that makes them a hypocrite. I grew up in an area where you had to have a car to go anywhere at all, and I'll take a more robust public transit system over more parking any day.

It's true, and they can be really strict about it. A few years ago I even saw a cop threaten to arrest a tourist for taking a photo of her toddler's first train ride.

Somewhere I have a set of illustrations based on complaint letters to the London Underground from ~100 years ago, and one of them is "please build a station at the end of my street." Times haven't changed.

Grove and Harrison don't support 10 yet. They're the ones that need extending so the WTC line can run longer trains.

Wow. It's easy to see why you're confused!

I had a similarly cryptic message several weeks ago, where they put two lines in the wrong order so it looked like I needed to come in even though I was told I was done the day before. Ended up having to go in person to be told otherwise because the phone just rang and rang and no one picked up. Super annoying. (And then I got another summons a couple days later! That one, thankfully, was excused entirely.)

No kidding -- particularly since the lawsuit took 7 years already. An entire decade for an elevator is ridiculous.

EDIT: I may be wrong about the elevator's location. The NJ.com article says "southwest entrance." The rendering I saw was part of an unrelated plan, so it might not be the one they're going to use.
