The best thing that I ever did was sell my rental units before the market tanked. JC is near impossible to maintain an investment property without being shaken down every few months by the city.

Bedbugs? I would pay for the treatment as a landlord as part of any contract with an extermintor.

If you drive or use Critter Cab, Dr. Thornton on Westside Avenue (Westside Animal Hospital) is good.

I don't know much about the vet at Newport.

I also highly recommend Dr. Hatch in Secaucus NJ. Only 15 minutes away and you can use the Critter Cab to pick up and drop off pets.

Absolutely. I saw it happening and called the police, but the they arrived after 20 minutes. It was during the heights hostage situation, so these recyclers had all the time they needed to liberate aluminum studs, brackets, and part of an "I" beam from a renovation project near the square.

I picked up two heavy duty file cabinets and one locker from the Salvation army for 30 bucks a few years ago. The locker was large enough for skis and the locking file cabinets were perfect for tools etc.

great price and heavy as hell.

Good point and love the new avatar.

As a Latino who supports gay marriage, but has several friends and family members who do not, I can only say that some of the old cultural "machismo" expectations still exist.

Does this happen every year or what? I tried to look it up online but can't find a source.

Historically, Mischief Night is gang initiation night but "killing 35 girls" is a bit exaggerated.

My brother was mugged near 77 Magnolia coming home from work early this month. He's not an easy target being reasonably streetwise, but one had a gun and another had a bat. He has lived his entire life in the area and never had a problem until recently.

October is also Gang Initiation month, so expect more of this random stupidity.

I'm loving this thread! Haven't thought about many of these places in a long time!

Star's was a bar on the western end of Newark Ave. just west of Tonnelle. They were known for their hot dogs. They had a very long bar. I think the sign with the hot dog is still on the building. The Texas weiner place on Central was across from the police station and I think was just named Texas Weiners.

Stars was an okay bar with fantastic food. I miss places like that. Bonner's D & J was another great place next to the Philippine Bread House on Newark Avenue.

Not a restaurant, but RANDS Ice Cream was the best ice cream in the tristate area.

Great question.

Also, his first name, Barack, is actually Hebrew.

I can't believe that McCain's campaign has stooped this low. I really liked this guy and wanted him to run against Gore in 2000.

Any of his past acts of heroism as a POW will be a footnote in his life's story after this campaign season and his career are in the history books.

I would check out and ask for advice from CATJC, a local yahoo group. Great cat people who could probably answer your question. You may also want to contact Companion Animal Trust on petfinder. CAT is very dedicated to the welfare of feral and domesticated felines in the area.

This happened to me a few years ago.

The city fixed the street and did some sewer maintenance. The plumber said that during the paving, my sewer line was damaged.

After the runaround for 2 months, I paid 7000 dollars to rip up a newly paved street to repair my sewer line.

True.

Oftentimes, having the butcher, the baker, and the candlestick maker on the board baffles me. People with proven track records in education or administration and innovative ideas need to be on that board or at least consulted.

When can we have a board whose members aren't a "who's who" of Jersey City politics for the last 30 years?
