Re: WORD Bookstore

Excuse me - there are NO chinese new year cards. Well, at least I don't think WORD would sell them. Even though that's a thoughful gesture, as a chinese myself, it would be weird to get a chinese new year card!!!

What you need is a "red envelope" and put some money in it (it's sold everywhere in chinatown this week). Even just a few dollars - like $8, which is a lucky number in China (and if you can, don't forget to use new, "crispy" dollars, as the tellers in chinatown calls them) as a token/symbol for prosperity and good luck.

No, I don't think we can fix our "current society" by just getting more people married - not if "marriage" is not "sacred" anymore, and where people can just get a divorce just as easy as getting a burger at McDonalds (anyone seen the "Get a divorce for $399" ads?).

Do you know what is the divorce rate nowadays? What's the point of getting married, just to get divorced a few years later? Does a broken family make a better society?

I think the "problems of our society" are much more deep rooted than just "marriage".

Marriage is about commitment. I've seen a lot of unmarried partners with kids who lead happy lives & family (my own included), than divorced families with kids who are shuttled between mom and dad every 2 weeks. Which family do you think is better for the society?

Marriage doesn't mean anything anymore - at least not the in sense it used to be, or what it's "meant" to be.

I'm willing to bet a majority of people in this country understand that society is better when most people get married. We also don't want children born out of wedlock.

If you don't see how society is devolving then I don't know what to tell you. But feel free to look at the poll tracking people's impression of the direction of the country and tell me what you conclude from that. One of the reasons the country is going to hell in a hand basket is that we have a bunch of people that shun marriage. Therefore, I'm happy that we're upping the incentives to commit to someone.

Re: Adopt Love!

We're seriously considering adopting a cat (perhaps not this weekend, but in the next 6 month). What would we need, besides the cat itself?

We're new at this, so want to make sure we get everything that's needed. I'm thinking:

- a cat bed
- cat litter, litter box
- cat food
- a scratch post???
- some cat toys???
- a collar? Do cats need collars?
- any other essentials?

TIA.

Turned out the transformer blew up at the essex Light rail station. It was a pretty significant blast (at least pressure-wise!)

Re: NJ W2 Tax Question

I agree - I don't understand why long-term domestic partnership (e.g. five or 10 years or longer, or something like that) is not legally binding (while civil union already is), in NJ.

What does a piece of paper mean these days anyways (given that divorce is so rampant!!!)???

Quote:

You know, I find it interesting that the civil union statute/benefits remain in place now that gay marriage (I think the PC term is same-sex marriage!) is now allowed in NJ. It has been a little over a year, actually. So, right now, the civil union legal status and its tax implications is a benefit extended to same-sex partners but not to opposite-sex couples. What's the rationale there at this point?

And, to be clear, I am not trolling. I am actually asking this in a sort of philosophical, out-loud musing kind of way. Why should a same-sex couple (that has the right and ability to enter into marriage) be entitled to a benefit not available to an opposite-sex couple that may be in an equally committed relationship. As SRhia says, she lives with her partner and they have kids. Kinda hard to not describe that as a committed relationship.

Definitely NO. Here is the applicable information on the subject:

I'd be interested to know too. Looking to move into a house (currently in apartment that we like, but with two boys it's tough on our downstairs neighbors). Looking at trulia and zillow everything is just so expensive now!!! Wish we had the money to buy several years ago

How is the honors/gifted program at MS4? Can anyone provide some feedback?

My son is currently at OLC in the 4th grade, and I'm considering if it's worthwhile moving him to MS4 for middle school (if he's eligible/passes the tests).

Thanks in advance.

Oh come on - you're already stuck in the train station. Does it matter whether it's gonna come in the next 5 min, or 50 min, or tomorrow, or never???? jk... My take is that their priority is different than ours - well, that's pretty obvious, isn't it!?!?!?!?

However, I do agree it's illogical. I often wonder who picks what gets displayed in the train stations' TVs. They sometimes have the weirdest stuff on those TVs (when it's working)!

I thought the brick color of the recessed areas in the middle of the building looks ugly - instead of the poo-brown, they should just have kept the exterior wall color all uniform.

I also thought the structure is just too big - they have one floor too many, I think.

Btw, is this a condo or rental? Somehow I'm thinking it is a condo?

If so, anyone has ideas about price ranges?

Also, lastly, I'd like to start the rumor that whole foods is coming to the retail on street level!?!?!?! Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!! What - not enough retail sq footage? Not the right demographics? JC is too poor? No parking space? Lies, just lies, I tell ya!

Happy New Year everyone!

Oh, don't worry. I bet PATH is already working on this - secretly of course. I mean, look at how good a secret they kept on the weekend closure on the WTC line (surprised everyone the week before the actual closure). I bet they've been working on this for years, and just wanted to surprise us!

I mean, we are long overdue on some good news in regards to the PATH, right? Even statistically, they've f*cked up and screwed us so many times, we're bound for a round of good news, RIGHT?????

It is intended for as many as 160,000 PATH riders daily, nearly four times the number who ride to the World Trade Center site today.

Um, how are those 160,000 riders going to fit into trains that are currently quite full at rush hour with a mere 46,000 riders?

Re: Advice needed on a situation

Thanks for all the advice so far - I understand this is not the most optimal way to get this resolved, but at this point, I'm still weighting all my options and trying to understand each one of them.

Now, in regards to how to collect the judgement - the contractor actually is licensed and has a company established, so can I put a lien against his company (if I win), since the company would have income?

In addition, I also got our management company involved (made aware of the situation) since the contractor came through the management co. However, I feel they have been stalling me ("we're still negotiating with the contractor on this") - so my question is, what role should the management company really play in this situation?

Thanks again!

OK, so you win a small claims judgment. Have you ever tried to collect one? Good luck with that, especially one that's likely to be less than $500. My bet is the contractor wouldn't even bother showing up to contest your claim. The hard part isn't winning, it's collecting. You'd likely end up having to go back to court (once you've located his assets/property) to get a lien or some sort of other enforcement action.

I agree with Jaded, at this point you should add up the cost of going to court which should include your time spent, the cost of collections and the cost of document filing etc. vs the cost of you going out and buying a new sink and having it installed.

Re: What to Know About New Executive Action on Immigration Reform
Home away from home
Home away from home

What you said is very true, however, don't forget there's always the other side of the coin. There are a lot of illegal immigrants that managed to get legal status, and become very productive members of the society - and they pay taxes, and do everything that a legal citizen would do.

We should give credit to those people that has worked very hard to achieve what they have in life (with less resources and opportunities sometimes).

Quote:

Illegal immigrants do not have the economic strength to support their children, which receives citizenship unlike other countries. We support their children with more educational and health benefits. Illegal immigrants are exploited by its own ethnic groups to work long hours with less than minimum pay. I still remember the government raiding Grand St and Barrow St, when they found 50 Chinese men living in subhuman conditions and sharing a bucket as a toilet in the late 1990s. These men work in China Town for the various restaurants in NYC.
When immigrants came in the past, there were jobs in factories in the Northeast and if Catholic, their social network was the Church who educated them and opened hospitals. That is not the case today. It is taxpayers responsibility today.

Re: What to Know About New Executive Action on Immigration Reform

But there will always be illegals coming to the US - it doesn't matter whether's there's amnesty today, tomorrow, next year, or 10 years from now. The flow of illegals won't stop!

That's the point I was trying to get across in my earlier posts - many people outside of the US believe in the "American dream", so they will keep coming as long as they can make more money here, and where their kids can potentially have a better life than themselves. This is why illegals come here, not because of the amnesty itself - but the "dream" and the "money"!!!

Personally, I believe all these political hoopla over immigration is just another distraction manufactured by the politicians to generate polarization and shift focus away from the much bigger issues (such as national debt, failing infrastructure, gun control, etc etc etc).
