Re: JC Gets Money $4.6 Mil to Repave Newark Ave Between Coles & Tonnelle! (Also Sip; Kennedy to Bergen)

Steve knows.

I contacted him after reading the proposal on this site and raising a grievance with regard to the lack of bike lanes. He passed my concern onto a city planner, whom responded. After that message sat in my inbox for a bit, I recently responded that the plan was undesirable. I wish I hadn't waited.

I brought IanMac47 in on that exchange, and more communication has been had since with others as well.

To what end, TBD.

I think this pretty well captures the NJ spirit in and support for Gatti. It may not be Izenberg's best writing (his ten-part series was amazing), but it's the right words coming at such the wrong time.

I mean... I'm not the most avid boxing consumer. It's hard without HBO and Showtime, but I watch the big fights and I try to keep on top of things. So, whatever the depth of my attention to the sport, I'm a huge fan of boxing. When I first came across Gatti, I was floored.

Re: Councilwoman Elect Lopez a Florida Resident?

So if the election is invalidated, could the Council nevertheless designate Lopez to the seat? Or even Lipski?

It sounds like the choices are simply terrible. If they appoint King to a seat he didn't win, that's not good either.

BTW I'm suprised that as yet there's been no allegation of fraud or "perjury" w/r/t her candidacy filings. I assume there's a declaration or affirmation of residency, etc., which is conclusively a false statement if the residency qualifications are not met. What would that be? Knowingly filing false records with a county agency. Etc.

Maybe Tom DeGise should sweep in and flush this lady down the drain and seize the reins as a do-gooder. Obviously Healy is a chump and doesn't have the balls to admit he failed in vetting of Ms. Loquat.

God forbid they figure out a way to install a center island and plant trees down the middle. And please don't tell me about the Path below making this impossible as the tunnel is about 15 feet below street level there. Raised planters as on the West Side Highway and Park. Ave. show this would work.

But instead, they make it EASIER for people to ditch the turnpike and use the local roads to get to the tunnel.

As for bike lanes, given the choice of riding in a bike lane on CCD and riding without one on a parallel route such as Wayne or Mercer, I'd opt for Wayne or Mercer.

Yes, even Broad Street in Newark has planters. Broad is totally different, of course. It's more like Newark Avenue in some ways as it has shopping, but is probably wider than Columbus. And, it has many tall buildings, whereas CC is often rinky-dink in comparison.

Arturo Gatti strangled in sleep with wife's purse strap, Brazilian police say

by The Associated Press
Monday July 13, 2009, 1:22 PM

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Police investigating the death of former boxing champion and New Jersey native Arturo Gatti are working on the assumption his wife strangled him with her purse strap while he drunkenly slept.

While cautioning that nothing is being ruled out, lead investigator Moises Teixeira told The Associated Press today he is certain the woman acted alone.
Al Bello/Getty ImagesArturo Gatti during an Atlantic City fight onJuly 22, 2006. Brazilian police say the New Jersey boxing champ was strangled over the weekend while he slept, with his wife Amanda Rodrigues being the main suspect.

"It was technically impossible for a third person to have been in the flat," where Gatti was found dead early Saturday, Teixeira said. "The investigation isn't finished, but we continue to think she did this alone."

Gatti's 23-year-old Brazilian wife, Amanda Rodrigues, told investigators she awoke Saturday about 6 a.m. to find her husband's body in the apartment they rented in Porto de Galinhas, a seaside resort in northeastern Pernambuco state.

Rodrigues told police she had a fight with Gatti after dinner Friday night and he pushed her to the ground, resulting in minor injuries to her elbow and chin. Witnesses also reported to police the couple fought and that Gatti was drunk.

Rodrigues told police the 37-year-old former junior welterweight champion then got into a cab with their son and returned to their rented apartment, leaving her alone downtown.

Teixeira said witnesses told police Gatti left his son to sleep in the apartment, then returned to the city center to find his wife. She arrived at the apartment before he did and waited for him. They then both went upstairs together.

Rodrigues told police she slept on the second floor of the apartment with her son, while Gatti slept on the first floor. She told police she awoke at 6 a.m. to feed her son and discovered her husband's body. Police say he most likely had been killed at least four hours before that.

Teixeira said police do not think anyone else entered the apartment and killed Gatti -- he said there were no signs of forced entry and electronic locks indicated nobody else had entered the room aside from Rodrigues and Gatti.

The pair married in 2007 and according to Rodrigues had a rocky relationship. Authorities were told the couple was extremely jealous of each other and that Gatti constantly complained about her clothing when she traveled to Brazil, police spokeswoman Milena Saraiva said.

According to Brazilian law, police accuse a person of a crime but it is up to the prosecutor to formally file a charge. Teixeira said police have until July 22 to deliver their findings to the prosecutor's office, but he hoped the investigation would be completed before then.

Rodrigues was accused of the crime Sunday and taken into police custody. She has been transferred to a woman's prison in the state capital Recife. She maintains her innocence.

Gatti, Rodrigues and their 10-month-old son arrived in Brazil on Friday for what they told a local real estate agent was a second honeymoon. The baby, who was unhurt, is now with Rodrigues' family in Brazil.

Gatti, a Canadian, fought an epic trilogy with Micky Ward that branded him one of the most exciting fighters of his generation. He retired in 2007 with a career record of 40-9 and 31 knockouts.

Known for his straightforward punching and granitelike chin, Gatti captured the super featherweight title in 1995, when he defeated Tracy Harris Patterson in Atlantic City, N.J. He won the junior welterweight title in 2004.

Yes, and they provide many opportunities for drug abuse intervention, food pantry work, one-stop shopping, condom distribution... and even pre/neo-natal care.

Thus, the brief teaching-moment presented even by an anonymous needle exchange is a foothold on the epidemic of drug abuse and the spread of disease. The intravenous user population may not be easy to get a hold of otherwise.

Does needle exchange lead to the facilitation of drug use or recovery and the methadone clinic? I don't know. But it's making the drug use and the drug user safer.

Sorry, but I wouldn't know where to put the route. I'm not familiar with the engineering of it: which rock to blast, which hill to climb, etc. I believe the Mayor proposed running it on top of the Embankment. Where did he envision it going?

I really wouldn't know the details. For example, if it sweeps up Newark Avenue, well that seems quite steep and busy. Route 139 is probably too busy and may present practical hurdles with the roadway below, though it is wide enough. But perhaps it could sweep alongside Newark Avenue to turn on Palisade. But then there's the school. Too dangerous? I'm just not sure. It should probably connect to Secaucus Junction.

Personally, I'd rather preserve the Bergen Arches as parks/ bike routes/ etc., but that may well be a good route for a light rail.

Sorry, but that is not good news at all.

Columbus is the widest street in town, but the plan does not include bike lanes. Rather the plan is to:

"conver[t] the road to alternate from three lanes eastbound in the AM and three lanes westbound in the PM... through alternate side parking and elimination of the curb extensions."
(source: private email).

CC will be a commuter-friendly autobahn through downtown.

More info coming soon...

Looks like she pays FL $50,000 to take her seat in disgrace as Jersey City's first Latina councilwoman.

Is the Hispanic community really willing to back this worthless joke? I doubt it. They live in this town, pay taxes in this town, vote in this town, and die in this town.

This reverse carpetbagger disgrace should withdraw now.

But, instead, she's taking the Healy Administration line of attack and getting reinforcements from the "Change We Can Piss On" campaign.

Re: New Mexican Food Cart Downtown

The food's good, but too pricey. And they didn't cut that high price when making my dish vegetarian. That's the obvious thing to do, and it was obvious I was expecting it. I really shouldn't have to spoon-feed this sort of idea. I was waiting for the offer.

I wanted to try their stuff, so I went along with it. And yes, it was tastier than the Chex-Mex all over town. Goodbye, Taco Express... we hardly knew ye.

If the vegetarian option included additional veggies or a bonus like avocado, the price would be appropriate. If I'm paying for beef/ chicken I'm not consuming, then I'm not really getting what I've paid for.

Mine didn't seem to include anything extra, but how would I know? That's why the price is the key indicator of the difference. When they drop the price for the vegetarian option, I'll be back. Not until then.

In the meantime, good luck Alex. The food's quality is only surpassed by the gracious, welcoming attitude of the host.

Your numbers fall short about how overtaxed we are, especially for services provided. I think you are leaving out the county and school portion of the taxes.

My assessment is just under 200K and my taxes are just under 12K.

That's about $1,000 a month for Willie Flood & Son, 10 year old potholes, a councilwoman from Florida, a mayor who gets into bar fights, a school system I can't send my kid to, a police force one step above mall cops, a rubber stamp council and so much more.

But the schools is good schools!

The only thing showing residency here is her voting record here, which is more frequent than in FL.

If she filed a homestead rebate here, that might show residence in NJ, and more fraud!

Hmmm. So she wants to pay Florida's low taxes rather than here, where it supports our schools. Ms. Loquat, you pitiful disgrace, quit now. You'll be forced to either pay FL in full to take your seat, and then take it in disgrace... Or abandon the seat and claim FL residency.

Since your political future is already worthless: take the money and run. Again.

I've seen "Jaws" there, and they also showed "Blade Runner" and "A Clockwork Orange." I had to miss both, but have seen them many times.

Orson Welles' "Touch of Evil," while it's in black-and-white, would definitely satisfy you. They showed that also.

So... keep your eyes peeled for a great selection.

Jersey City Parking Authority inspector charged in scuffle

This story is great. Well... except that the cop got hurt. That's no good.

It's just another piece of anecdotal evidence that the JCPA is staffed with sociopaths, tyrants, miscreants, and misanthropes.

It's not just that they double-park down in Paulus Hook when they're fishing. They've also fleeced downtown as they exceeded their authority with those boots. I'm sure there are bigger problems than both: leadership problems. Ordinance problems. Maybe dismantle them and re-commission them under a new aegis?

If there's any relation to the political Manzos, like Lou, the story gets an extra bump for its perfect storm of absurdity. The idea that a schmoe from the local parking authority is pissed about state MVC is making his life inconvenient. Just great.

I also like the second to last paragraph, as some of you could probably guess: the cop handled the fighting and a civilian grabbed the keys. Ok, ok, it's totally different this time... and I still wasn't there to make my assessment of "what I would do." :D

But, I was supposed to go to the DMV early this morning but I changed my plan. I regret I missed the fun.

Jersey City Parking Authority inspector charged in scuffle with cop outside MVC office
by The Jersey Journal
Tuesday July 07, 2009, 9:35 AM

A Jersey City Parking Authority inspector who wanted a Motor Vehicle Commission office to open early just for him got into a scuffle with a police officer and was arrested Monday morning, police said.

Raymond J. Manzo, 35, of Winfield Avenue, was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct, police said. Police Officer Alexander Rivers injured his right eye and was treated at Christ Hospital.

Manzo has been suspended from his position, police said. Parking Authority Director Mary Spinello was not available for comment this morning.

Manzo arrived at the MVC office on at 438 Summit Ave. at 8:15 a.m. and became agitated when he was told by Rivera, who was working an off-duty detail at the building that he'd have to wait until the office opened, a police report said.

As he was leaving, Manzo yelled to Rivera that his police car was illegally parked and Rivera had better move it before it got towed, because Manzo worked for the city Parking Authority, according to the police report.

Manzo then got into his car, which had been parked behind the police vehicle, and parked it illegally at the intersection of Summit and Sip avenues, police said, adding that Manzo then refused to move his car and then dared Rivera to arrest him.

When Rivera attempted to arrest him, Manzo resisted and the two wrestled briefly, the report said, before Manzo attempted to get into his car and leave. It was then that an MVC worker came to Rivera's aid and pulled the keys out of the ignition of Manzo's car.

Backup units arrived and Manzo was then arrested.

This sounds like the assassination attempt on the diplomat Jack Ryan was protecting in "Clear and Present Danger." Did you notice any Uzi-toting assassins on dirt bikes or bad guys on rooftops with shoulder-fired rockets?

I would SO prefer that to having another drunk driver racing through "our fair city."

Anyway, I feel like there's a bar nearby that everyone hates. The name escapes me... the sign says one name, but the patrons all call it something else. I'm not trying to blame that establishment, because we don't know all the facts... but the proximity is just amazing.

I never received the flyer. Long story short, even though they claimed they never actually got rid of any bikes, they did give me $500 for what was then a three-year old $1,200 bike. All in all, I thought that was a fair outcome given the circumstances - but it still sucks to be violated like that.

So the janitor has your $1200 bike? And his son has your son's bike.

And this because of some non-registration issue? That's terrible. I'm sure there were hundreds and hundreds of unregistered bicycles laying around, cluttering up the space that needed to be removed because some crackpot scheme the building management planned for that room. Terrible.
