The census makes projections midway between two actually census counts, which placed Jersey City at 241K and change in 2006 and Newark at 281k and change.

Its common to under count in urban areas, especially in poor urban areas. Accurate counting often depends on local efforts. Detroit for instance, launched a push to count as many people as possible when it was projected to become the first American city to have a population below 1 million people after having reached that point.

Newark had been growing in population under the 2006 census projection, which would maintain the gap between the two cities. However, Newark has also been much harder hit by foreclosures, much more so than even the less affluent neighborhoods in Jersey City.

One problem facing Jersey City is that many younger downtown residents maintain official residency elsewhere, either because they are students or because they more transient and find it easier to rely on a parental address. Of course, the higher rents in Jersey City encourage roommates and apartment shares, which probably means more people living in tighter quarters.

At best I think Jersey City, if it counts everyone and the newer buildings fill up, is looking at 260K to 265K. Newark will need to lose some 20k residents to fall behind Jersey City.

That said, by 2020, Jersey City could easily have another 20,000 to 30,000 units assuming an economic turn around in the next few years while Newark is still stalling in terms of large scale redevelopment.

If the 2000 census was about 7,000 shy, I wouldn't be surprised if JC's population is around 275,000 or so by 2010.

Next census is 2010. (They occur every ten years.) It's a long jump to 300,000 people - think about it: How many people does a new hi-rise add? 1,000? So you have had A, Liberty Towers, Gull's Cove, the Shore and a few others - that's a far stretch to 60,000. I'd be surprised if there are more than 600 or 700 people currently living in all of Liberty Harbor.

Getting a more accurate count would help though. Most estimates agree that Jersey City was undercounted somewhere around 7,000 people in 2000. At around $10,000 per person in state and federal aid directly tied to the census, that's $70 million - which would go a long way to solving the city's current and ongoing financial mess.

There are laws prohibiting any legal actions or enforcement arising from the taking of the census. Census counters even take an oath that reaffirms they will do nothing but count people and ask their proscribed questions. (Funny, I just read this this morning.)

how are people accounted for in the census? does this include the "aliens" that are not readily willing to partake in such a 'legal' head count.

if not, then maybe that number is not accurate?

The most recent census has JC's population at around 240,000 or so, but I believe this number is from the year 2000 census. I have read/heard that by the next census (when is that?), JC will surpass Newark as NJ's largest city. Newark has about 280,000 I believe.

I guess with all the development downtown since 2000, we'll be nearing the 300k mark? Especially once Liberty Harbor is totally filled in. Any guesses on what JC's population is right now?
