Re: Storefronts on Newark Ave

I'd be curious to know what percentage of people who frequent that section of Newark to go to Skinnners Loft, Roman Nose, Savoy Optical, Sawadee, H&R Block actually drive cars there as opposed to walking or taking public transportation like path or bus. The only municipal lot I know of is the one up by Box. And as someone said earlier the imposition would be perhaps just Friday to Sunday

Think it would create more pedestrian traffic for people to meander from place to place without intrusion of cars- crossing street from say Roman Nose to the bar going into Hudson Camera for example. Or LITM then going to a movie across the street. http://roomfordebate.blogs.nytimes.co ... -back-to-the-future/?_r=0

Well, really my preference would be bossa nova jazz. I'm in my 40s and would prefer something that catered to a 35+ crowd, but even when I was younger I liked lounge music/bossa nova. Feel like that aspect of JC is missing or I haven't found it yet. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32_tkje6NjU

They really should eventually close down Newark Avenue from Erie Street to Grove to vehicular traffic and create a pedestrian hub there for nightlife, shopping, eating, services, etc. Just in that mere span, I could see a boutique hotel (it's so close to path); an indie movie theater like the Quad, Landmark Sunshine, Angelika -- not everyone wants to go to New York for such films or drive out to Montclair, Chatham or Bowtie in Hoboken (those large clothing stores that extend from Newark to Columbus, they are very deep cavernous spaces, would be such an ideal spot); and a lounge that serves just dessert, drinks or tapas and offers jazz or chill house music (Hotel Costes, David Sabat, Dmitri, Little Louie Vega, Bill McCamie).

While I can't speak for user, I do think those of you who are proponents of stop & frisk or dismiss as it being a mere inconvenience fail to realize that (1) there were more black and brown people stopped than there are actual black/brown people in NYC (i.e. the same people were being stopped multiple times (and not because of reasonable suspicion) rather because they have a certain color of skin and police needing to meet their targets; (2) that merely dressing well/middle class will not innoculate you from overt or subtle racism (I've been profiled here in JC in certain stores which shall remain nameless as have a few of my professional black/Latina friends, have been pulled over and ticketed by JC police but then when being pulled over with white friends driving commiting same infraction, have seen them get warnings); and (3) Bloomberg was playing fast and loose with the facts as far as taking credit that stop and frisk is the sole reason why crime has gone down (guns weren't found and confiscated in these stops but perhaps some weed).

Polish restaurants
Home away from home
Home away from home

My cousin and his wife (she's Polish) will be visiting me this weekend and I wanted to take them to a nice Polish restaurant. Tentatively, I was taking them to Greenpoint but with the sketchy weather predicted, I think I might want to stay local and on Jersey side of river. Are there any dine-in places in JC (aside from Sava) or surrounding nearby towns?

Indie theaters in Jersey City, with its diversity and demographics, would do well and be supported. Not everyone wants to socialize in Manhattan. Hoping White Eagle Hall comes to fruition fast and looking forward to whatever they have in the Powerhouse.

Re: Future of Newport Mall
Home away from home
Home away from home

I'm all for New Urbanism but can't see the practicality and prohibitive costs incurred for demolishing it when it's not that decrepit (think it was built in 1987), has a customer base, and Simon has been improving it since it acquired it. Full disclosure, I hardly go to the Mall myself but realize many others do; and yes, there seems to be a certain subliminal level of classism involved ("I don't go to this mall because there's no Brooks Brothers, so lets knock it down"). I used to live at Newport (from 95 to 2004) and used to go there all the time (for haircuts, some shopping, movies) as it was convenient and I didn't have a car at the time and liked it enough. Being from Monmouth County, I preferred Monmouth Mall and Freehold Raceway. Interestingly enough, the Mall was deliberately built as an implicit barrier to foster the gated community concept away from the so-called then "undesirable" parts of Jersey City, and it worked. In my years of living at Newport, I hardly recall going to the other side until I discovered a place called Downtown Eddy's Mixed Grill over on Jersey Ave and started investigating JC. I do hope Metro Plaza gets developed especially in light of burgeoning development in the PAD and there's so much potential there. Metro Plaza mixed-use development would augment that nicely and hopefully offer more nightlight options. It would also foster more cohesion and continuity between the existing towers there.

Mooby summed it up well and User's article speaks for itself. It seemed like the bbq place would be on the right side facing the building and the market on the left side. On another note, I wish this place would open a location in Jersey City. http://www.themeatballshop.com/

great tour and think it will add a great social scene/upbeat atmosphere adjacent to our budding restaurant/entertainment row on Newark. Yes as Moobycow says, a bbq place (hope they have those wooden tables where it's communal dining) which will be operated by these guys I believe. http://www.hobokenturtleclub.com/

And yes purveyors of produce for the year-round market.

so would I mon ami -- stayed at the Vendome last time I was there and had an awesome time, but the point of the article as well as the post about Hoboken's buildings and implementation of its program is that it makes sense to integrate downtown urban areas with a cross-section of people of various economic levels for a variety of reasons. Just because someone makes say $200K does not mean they have class, are clean, have values and exhibit ideal behavior; and likewise just because someone makes $35K does not mean they are low-class, rude, prone to criminality, dirty, etc. A la prochaine.

"It?s an effort to make Nashville seem more cosmopolitan, trying to get middle-class people to move back in the city,? Mr. Fraser said. ?But there?s something to be said for having a mix of incomes in a neighborhood as it relates to democracy,? he said, noting that redevelopment could eventually displace longtime residents."

While I am pro-preservation and love the idea of a Highline in Jersey City, I have some trepidation about the actual hard costs and ongoing O&M. The NY Highline is amazing IMHO but not sure that can replicated here given the surrounding environment of West Chelsea, the meatpacking district, etc. and nor does it have to be. We are not NYC but Jersey City and not inferior. Neverleft makes an interesting point about thinking outside the box and that's a novel approach of individual themed parks for recreational pursuits. I would add one to his/her list of one of the spaces to show films on a large scrim with concession stands serving popsicles and whatnot from local purveyors. Also, one park could be an English Garden or landscaped.

I definitely don't think those structures should be demolished, the walls and ivy on them are beautiful and peaceful.

For once in your newcomer lives why don?t you start thinking on your own and STOP looking to NYC for shi*. You are all freaking copy cats. They have a Whole Foods, you want a Whole Foods. They have an Elevated Park, you want an elevated park. They have a Barcade, you want (and got) a Barcade. What next a floating swimming barge in the Hudson off LSP? How unoriginal of you.

Do you think I am going to pay the millions and millions of dollars to not only construct your elevated park but the millions to maintain it? And the millions to settle the law suits from the parents of kids (and drunken hipsters) who fall off of your elevated park? Connecting bridges over every street..you must be on drugs.

Think out of the box for once and let NYC look to us!

Here is a simple cool idea. I have not read the entire thread and don?t know if anyone else came up with this ingenious (and cheap) idea yet. (but from reading your posts from other threads I doubt it)

Why would we want another outdoor park in JC we have enough of them. Do something called WALKING or RIDING A BIKE over to JC?s many parks. The idea of a quiet out of the way park is NOT an elevated park. What peace would it bring? You are going to hear the city noise 10 fold being elevated. (sound rises like heat) Also do you really want to look across the street over into someone?s 3rd floor bathroom window while they shave their legs or pits? (ok creepy calm down) And how fast do you think you can climb down 2 flights of stairs to go after the punk you see breaking into your car 20 feet below? Those pictures someone posted are so breath taking but guess what you could have taken the pictures at street level and had the same effect. Duh.

Here do this?.for under $500K ..no under $300K.

-put up a BIG sign that says FREE DIRT. (let?s just hope there?s no chromium in it .. maybe a NO RETURNS sign would also help)

-dig all of the dirt out of the embankments leaving the beautiful bare stone walls. Patch them if need be. At least you won?t need a multimillion dollar French drain system in the dirt to protect them.

-make multiple street level mini enclosed parks on each block (who the F wants to climb two flights of stairs to get to an elevated park..with a baby carriage) Cut entrances into the stone walls, put up cool local artist created gates. (with locks..heavy locks!)

-Throw a tennis court in one, a hand ball court (or are you yuppies into bocce ball now) in another. A Jungle Gym for the rug-rat crowd. No hoops though because as you know it always attracts a bad element. (a yuppie with a b-ball is bad news a very ugly sight, especially when they start trying to talk ghetto)

- leave a little dirt in each .. make mini elevated park areas with flowers and trees (I?m talking 3 feet dirt mounds not 20 feet) within the walls. (and NO freakin dog walks) Make one just an adult chill park for relaxing (and picking up chicks) ..maybe have one of those fancy Japanese gardens in it with those cool big orange and white fish. (yeah like they would last one night in JC)

-the possibilities are endless mini golf, small rentable party space(cover half of one with a glass roof) ,gazebos, music shells (can you image the acoustics for summer time concerts?) One more thing NO bathrooms let people shi* for themselves somewhere else or hold it in.

Get the gist of it yet? Enclosed mini parks within the city to SHUT OUT all of the city noise and ugly sights. (not you honey) Not an expensive elevated park that lifts you 20 feet above the city. The same dam city noise and ugly sights just 20 feet higher?no thanks!

Let?s get started. Print up some flier?s announcing a design contest. A fresh design with be picked for each blocks mini-enclosed park space.

(listen to this old-timer...I posted this just 5 minutes ago and look...a new yorker named maybeMoving is already thinking about moving here.)

Re: Two Boots Pizza

I love Two Boots. I go to the one in Grand Central. I think the crust is semolina. It's delicious and not thick. I hope they eventually add a permanent theater component like the one depicted in the photos above showing indie films. I've said it a million times before, but that lower part of Newark -- below the clock -- needs to be closed to vehicular traffic, cordoned off with potted plants like Horace Greeley Park or the pedestrian park/sitting area at Times Square and made into a ramblas. Restauranteurs like LITM, Sawadee, Skinner's Loft, Two Boots, etc. could then have umbrella tables on sidewalk and street in the warmer. They could even project movies onto one of the buildings on a scrim like the lower east side pop up project.

Saw it last night and had a great time with friends/neighbors. Solid performances from the cast, amazing job with the set, and a great job creating great ambience/welcoming atmosphere from such a raw space. Had dinner at Hamilton Park and got the 10% discount. Enjoyed our community theater. Keep up the good work!

Remembering Taylor Siluw?

by William Johnson on June 20, 2011

in Features, Remembrances

On Sunday, June 19, 2011, Taylor Siluw?, popular writer, blogger and activist died from lung cancer in his home in New Jersey. He was 43 years old.

Taylor was born January 27, 1966, in Jersey City, where he lived most of his adult life. He studied creative writing at New York University, fulfilling what he considered ?a burning passion to write.? Known for his darkly erotic and humorous story telling style, Taylor?s writing has been featured in numerous publications including Details, Venus, Literary New York, Out IN Jersey, FlavaLIFE, and the E-zine Velvet Mafia. His short stories appeared in the anthologies Law of Desire (Alyson Books) and Best Gay Erotica 2008 (Cleis Press). In addition, Taylor published two sexually charged short story collections, Dancing With the Devil (SGL Caf? Press) and Cheesy Porn?and other Fairy Tales (SGL Caf? Press).

Taylor?s writing reached new heights of popularity on his blog, SGL Caf?.Com, which combined a canny combination of the personal and political. Taylor?s blog served has a fiery, and often hilarious, platform for the rights of same gender loving men, while also providing insightful and candid asides on his personal life, popular culture and his struggle with cancer.

Fellow writer and friend, Nathan James said of Taylor, ? [He] was one of the most beautiful human beings I?ve ever known. He was one of my best friends, and a gifted writer, as well. Like me, Taylor was a passionate LGBT activist and political junkie. We used to sit up for hours and hours at his house, talking about issues of the day. Taylor?s writing was darkly provocative, exploring a different side of LGBT life??
