Re: Atheist Group Stops Parking Discounts for Jehovah\'s Witnesses in Journal Square

@ Slacky

If we're going to deny tax-exempt status to child molesters, then we certainly need to start with Public Schools, who harbor and cover up molesters by a ratio of 100 to 1 over Catholics.

Besides that, there are many non-Catholic churches and religious organizations who provide essential services to the disadvantaged and disenfranchised which no secular or government institution can be bothered with; see, for example, the history of New Jersey's mass expulsion of the mentally ill from institutions around the state.

The fact is that the tired refrain of "Catholic child-molesters!!!" simply indicates an anti-Catholic bias, while giving a free pass to the other myriad other kid-touchers in public education. I'd expect more intellectual honesty of you, sir.

As for "taxing the Church(es)," I'd agree if we also started to tax public schools, universities, and hospitals as well.

The last time I went there was about 2 years ago, about 11:30 on a Sunday night. Sat outside with a friend, ordered two pints. Drank them. Fabio asked if we'd like another round. Now 11:50. Said sure. Two sips in, he said "we're closing, you'll have to finish up." Rudely.

Good riddance.

Re: Traffic Ticket - Fighting It

In my own recent experience, there's no way to win.

The cop will flat out lie. The prosecutor will play cowboy. The judge will not believe you. It's pointless, because it's a culture and a language that has nothing to do with truth or justice, but with jargon and rule sets that favor the prosecution.

In my case I was completely innocent, and could not on principal lie to the court and plead guilty. But that lie is the standard operating procedure of traffic court. I watched so many people spit out the word "guilty," and knew full well that they (whether they were actually guilty or not) did not believe themselves to be guilty, and were standing there, with no recourse but to lie.

It's a dragooning!

Perhaps it's time for a zero tolerance policy for drugs and alcohol for the police with mandatory random testing. Should end these shenanigans.

Tragic, truly. It's really sad to see bums leaving and working class replacing them.

If you'd actually read Groovlstk's post, you'd understand that he's lamenting the loss of local characters, not of bums.

Groovlstk eulogizes the loss of community and neighborhood, and the corporate homogenization of humanity. I'm surprised a right-winger like yourself finds fault in those sentiments, as they're pretty traditionalist.

Eddie gives me the willies.

And I saw Teddy in real life once. He tried to split a cab with me at like 3 in the morning.

The cab driver gave him a really hard time.

I then got in the cab, and told the cab driver to turn on the meter, and the cab driver started screaming at me and threw me out the the cab, squealed his tires, and took off at a high rate of speed. Does that count as a weirdo?

And what exactly do you think should have been done about this? Do you have an idea for a general solution to keep crazy people off of public transportation? Is it better that they be driving?

Call in the JCPD! They seem to know exactly how to deal with crazy people.

Not on the PATH train they won't. It's called jurisdiction.

Actually, I've got a separate question. What is the PA jurisdiction? Can they write tickets anywhere, or just on PA roads? Anyway to find out?

I just proved my point about Monday morning Quaterbacking without knowing all of the facts.

This is the typical dumb analogy trotted out every time someone questions police actions.

We're not talking about a football game. A private citizen was killed by the police force. All questions are not only important, but fundamentally a part of the right of citizens to question their government.

We don't have to defer to the judgment of the police in situations like this. We don't have to "put ourselves in their shoes."

Because they fired and killed, the weight of explanation is on them. I hope that the impending investigation looks at root problems and possible solutions, many of which have already been brought up in this thread.

Efforts like yours, to cast the police as being somehow above the common citizen are a large part of the reason many people resent the police. They perpetuate the stereotype that only a Serpico can affect change, because the police and their families and supporters band together and violently dismiss any criticism or demands for answers.

No one is saying that the police in this situation acted maliciously or irresponsibly - but the result seems to indicate that best practices and protocol that currently exist are ineffective, faulty, and dangerous, both to those who break the law (unwittingly or otherwise) and to the officers and agencies sworn to uphold it.

Your knee-jerk, barely formulated defenses do nothing but cast you as a zealous supporter, regardless of the rectitude of police actions, or fundamental flaws in the policing system.

It's not an excuse, but it is a valid reason to declare that someone isn't culpable for their actions.

So, mental illness doesn't exist. It's nem damn city laywers getting all slick with their jurisprudence and science!

And last time - put yourselves in the cops' position - somebody stabs you, first reaction is to be compassionate and understanding - or do you defend yourself? When you can answer that question REALISTICALLY - then post something worth reading.

Ok, I'll put myself in the cops position. An imbalanced woman is wigging out in her locked apartment. I never would have opened that door.

Furthermore, the cops are supposed to act with a level of judgment and responsibility surpassing what the average person would do, and certainly surpassing what a violent cretin like you would do. If cops are just everyday people with guns, then what the hell do we need them for? We can all get guns and take care of it ourselves.

So which is it: are police "special" or not?

^^^

Ugh. I realize I'm taking you away from the Rush Limbaugh show, but your rush to damn the mentally ill needs to be addressed.

Try and look at this rationally. The woman was in her apartment. By herself. Locked in.

Was there the opportunity to call a counselor? Was there the opportunity to wait it out? Shoot a sleeping dart? Was she a danger to anyone besides herself AT THAT GIVEN TIME. Apparently, based on news reports, not. If those facts change, or are clarified, and it becomes apparent that the police acted in the most responsible and reasonable manner, throughout the ordeal, then I'll happily retract my concerns.

But we're talking about a human life here. You don't apparently see any value in it. But as of right now, with the facts at hand, I can see no good reason for this woman being dead.

You can drag unrelated anecdotes into this (Light Rail killer, etc.) So can I - how about the killing in Brooklyn earlier this year, where the PO tasered and killed the mentally unstable guy swinging a fluorescent tube, and then ended up killing himself? Again, the police didn't know how to respond to the situation, and TWO PEOPLE died.

You can dismiss the mentally ill as animals all you want if it makes you feel better. But I'd put you right in that category - you must be a sociopath to not have empathy for mentally ill people who die in tragic circumstances.

Animals?

In contrast to your death-wishes, I hope no one in your family ever falls victim to mental illness or addiction. Because, truly, this woman could have been anyone's mother, sister, daughter, or wife.

You're response to the taking of a life, no matter the circumstances, is revolting.

Woman killed after slashing cops
Wednesday, July 22, 2009

Mayor Jerramiah Healy, at a press conference late last night at the Jersey City Medical Center, said: "The wife had psychiatric issues in the past and wasn't taking her medication."

By the time police got to the apartment, the husband was in the hallway and the wife had locked herself inside the apartment and chained the door, and police had to use boltcutters to get in the door, Healy said.

Police Chief Tom Comey said seven officers entered the apartment, including two Emergency Services Unit officers, and tried "non-lethal measures" to get her to calm down.

So, the woman is mentally imbalanced, but alone in her apartment. The police CUT THROUGH the door, no doubt agitating her further. Then they blow her to pieces when she attacks.

This stinks.
