Charter schools can and do have their charters revoked for poor performance. There is direct accountability. What is the accountability for poor performance at district schools - besides the NCLB silliness?
If charter schools were in fact considered public schools, then the JC charters would receive $17,000 per child that the district schools receive, rather than about $8,500.

The baby backpacks save space? Are you kidding? I'm constantly getting whacked in the face or back by someone who had not removed his/her backpack before getting on the train. They often take up as much space as another person but the wearer is oblivious. They're a menace!

I will not jump down anyone's throat. I simply note that lumping all charter schools together as one entitity is as falacious as making a generalization about all district schools. Charter schools are not the answer as there is no one single answer to a problem as large as "education."
As for anecdotal evidence, my personal comment about the superior quality of the education that my children received at LCCS is surely as valid as your personal observation about charter school children. My older son and his LCCS classmates were as well prepared to excel at McNair as his private and district school counterparts. I guess my testing sample of two (plus their friends) is as statistically (in)significant as your sample.

If people on the platforms would just move out of the way to let exiting passengers off, the whole boarding process would be a whole lot faster...but no, people attempt to get on while people are getting off -- or refuse to move to let people out.
Strangely enough, the people who ride the Manhattan subway seem to understand the physics about two bodies occupying the same space.

I took the train from Grove at 7:25 am with no problems. You would think that problems would be earlier when it's colder, rather than later.
AND even though I am signed up for PATH alerts, I had no emails this morning at all. How odd.

Moving a few signs that anyone with open eyes can avoid? Are they kidding?
People drive through red lights every day. Now THAT's danger! If we got a grant of $180K to put up signs that no one really needed, let's get another grant to fix it. OR just limit the cost and remove them entirely.

For a purely logical stand, banning divorce goes a lot further in protecting the "sanctity of marriage" than prohibiting people who wish to marry from marrying.
But when did logic have anything to do with this debate?

Nothing is the same as marriage until the "other" is recognized by all states and by the federal government. So let's just make it marriage and be done with it.

It is well known that some out of town teachers received dispensation to bring their children to McNair. That practice has been eliminated (allowing the students already admitted to graduate).
What evidence do you have that "unqualified" students are getting in? -- and how are you defining unqualified?

Oh for Pete's sake, anyone who gets into McNair is a "scholar" already. It's not as though the kids just pop in at 9th grade and become hard working students.
The school has earned its place for a reason, but it's kind of hard to screw up the marathon when you're starting from mile 24. K-Lo, a McNair mom

From Steve Fulop --
I hope you had a good Thanksgiving. I recognize that these are tough times in our City and there has never been a more important time for our City government to function efficiently and effectively to help ease the growing burden we are certainly all feeling. This past week's City Council meeting was among the most difficult that I have had to sit through as a member of the Council. I have attached an editorial and an article below that I strongly believe is worth your time to read: Editorial: Building vote proves council is inept New Appraisal Nixed, Building Purchase Moves Forward In the end, this is really your money that is being spent; and this is your government. If you have ever had an interest in getting involved in reshaping the City and have even a little bit of time to spare, please send me an e-mail. Changing the political culture in Jersey City is a goal and change will only come about through the collective commitments of one person at a time. Sincerely, Steven
