I doubt that everyone is using the same measure of what constitutes violence.

Jersey City under reports incidents. Union City schools are not more violent they just actually try to report as many of these incidents as they can.

Do people honestly believe each school in JC averages about 1 violent incident each? That is what it would average to if you subtract the 80 that the charter school reported which was probably the only school that actually tried to report all of them.

We know 49 incidents happened in the other schools besides that one charter school. If lets say every incident happened in the four major high schools only(Dickinson, Ferris, Lincoln and Snyder) that would mean each only averaged about 12-13 incidents all year. I am sure just one of these high schools could get that many in a week or two.

"Union City, with only 9,730 students, reported the most violent incidents last year with 144"
I bet atleast 9,000 of them students are with MS13, Latin Kings & Netas.

I'm wondering if there is some funny math at work:

Gov. Jon S. Corzine and Education Commissioner Lucille E. Davy today announced the release of the Department of Education's annual report on school violence and vandalism, which shows a continued decline in the number of incidents of violence, vandalism and weapons in New Jersey's public schools.

The annual report to the Legislature reveals a 5 percent decline in the total number of incidents reported between the 2006-07 and 2007-08 school years. Individual offense categories that experienced major declines include: violence at 5 percent, vandalism at 11 percent and weapons at 14 percent.

In general, the total number of incidents reported decreased by almost 1,000 to 17,666 in 2007-08; 18,633 incidents were reported in 2006-07.

In Hudson County, Union City, with only 9,730 students, reported the most violent incidents last year with 144.
In contrast, Jersey City -- by far the biggest district in the county with 28,119 students -- reported 129 violent incidents.

The Jersey City Community Charter School, with 570 students, reported the third highest number of violent incidents with 80.

Elysian Charter School in Hoboken, along with the Soaring Heights Charter School in Jersey City and Weehawken Public Schools reported zero incidents of violence.

In Jersey City Public Schools, weapons were used in the 63 of the incidents reported.

"The safety and security of our school children is one of our highest priorities," said Governor Corzine. "These results demonstrate how we are working to ensure that students and teachers throughout the state have an environment that is conducive to learning and free from violence and other aggressive actions."

The report can be found at: http://www.nj.gov/education/schools/vandv/0708/
