You say that but actions speak louder than words and your actions will in fact turn it into a dog run. That's how it starts: one dog owner does it, then another dog owner sees it and copies it, then so on and so on and so on......

I grew up not too far from the mainline of the LIRR in Queens and I always found the distant sound of the train passing through in the middle of the night very soothing. Same thing with the squeeling sound of the freight trains entering/leaving the over 150 year old tunnel at the western end of 10th street.

The Music Box, Indios and Latin Lounge are all Latino bars. They are no more or less obnoxious than bars you will find on Washington Street in Hoboken. The difference might be that the Hoboken police have an easier job patrolling the strip at closing time on Washington, than the JC police do, but you'll find exactly the same issues.

I've been inside those 3 bars many times with my girlfriend. I've shot pool with the locals and I have never felt threatened nor unwelcome. Yes there are probably loud and obnoxious people leaving those bars at times, but no more than any place young people hang out - it just seems worse because other than the nighttime drama, the area is generally very quiet. And don't say these people are out-of-towners. The Latino population downtown is bigger than most people care to accept, and will likely grow bigger.

I agree with everything you said except the last part about likely growing bigger.

One thing to keep in mind is that nobody knows what the race is/was of the taxi driver that took a pass on the black passenger. It could very easily have been a black cab driver passing up a black passenger.

Maybe the cab driver went to the Fernando Mateo school for cab driving. A big part of me says I can't blame him all that much.

Quit going to bars, you idiots, and choose a meeting in a church basement somewhere instead. And for a father to defend this violen outburst is borderline psychotic. Try to get your son some help instead of defending this horrible behavior, you hapless moron!

If he's going to stay away from alcohol first step would be to quit the JCFD.

And let's not forget that regardless of the animal being in a pet-free zone the animal is usually without a leash. That was against the law before the park was renovated and guess what. It is still against the law.

Not uniquely dangerous. Just much more disgusting. With your logic the next time I'm in the park and have to take a leak I'll just piss in the park. Better yet, I'll go piss in the dog run. I'm sure the dog owners in the dog run will be completely understanding with that. I mean piss is piss right?

Re: Hamilton Park dogs

Last Saturday afternoon I walked pass the "pet-free" zones on my way to White Star bar. I have lived in Hamilton Park since 1998 and I have to say that I never saw so many adults and children playing in the "pet-free" zones as I did this past Saturday. It was beautiful to behold. So many children were running around on the grass either kicking a soccer ball, playing catch with their parents, playing tag, etc. It was great to see the park being used for who it was intended (i.e., human beings) and not 100% as a dog run. I'd hate to think that these kids are playing in an area full of left behind dog piss and crap.

Every evening I see people with their off-leash dogs in the pet-free zones of Hamilton Park. As a dog owner, I just don't understand this. There are two dog runs. And if you still insist on having your dog off-leash, there are areas that aren't designated pet-free. Now two of the pet-free signs have been uprooted. I have no idea who did this. I'm just wondering why we can't have a couple of pet-free zones where people can sit and enjoy the park and not have to worry about sitting in dog pee.

It's great that you behave as a responsible dog owner. It sucks that there are so many other irresponsible dog owners that thumb their noses at the rest of the neighborhood.

New Jersey has one of the worst returns of federal tax dollars. For every dollar we pay towards the federal government, we get back something like $0.72. That's not a very good rate of return.

I never understood that argument. Politicians from rich states make that argument all the time; that they don't receive enough in proportion to the taxes their locality pays up. Well, hello, that's the exact argument every wealthy PERSON makes when they complain about paying to much in taxes. And I don't see these politicians agreeing that individuals that pay the most taxes should be receiving the most governmental benefits.

New Jersey is a relatively wealthy state. I think for NJ to be receiving from the federal government 72% of what it contributes is a damn good rate of return. Actually it's quite obscene. This state should be much more self reliant on its own funding given the taxes it already collects for its own spending needs.

Really, no right on red in NYC?

I've seen plenty of it, and I blame the city for not bothering to post signs at the major highways, bridges & tunnels. Who would know if no one ever tell them except the rare cop writing the ticket?

The city doesn't post "no right on red signs" for the same reason it doesn't post speed limit signs all over Manhattan. It is a blanket rule where only the exceptions are posted.

Short-sighted?? Short-sighted like a fox. Funny how all of a sudden options have been created that are less costly to NJ taxpayers. And there are likely other options that haven't been presented yet. Thank you Christie for making your colleagues go back to their drawing boards to come up with creative, cheaper solutions instead of simply treating the State of NJ as a bottomless wallet.

I'm glad layoffs have been averted, but is this a good deal for the city? The police will forgo a week's pay this year, but they get two comp days in return, and they can collect the deferred pay when they retire, plus an extra day's pay.

Isn't this one more example of Jersey City government filling a budget hole with a short-term fix? By the time all these officers retire, the city will end up paying 20 percent more (that extra day's pay) than it would have otherwise.

You're exactly right. It really isn't even a "fix". It's just another postponement of a real fix to the finances. But the police union will be out there trumpeting how it was some tremendous concession on their part when it reality they are giving up nothing and in fact are getting more $.

The jobs went overseas because of the unions, not the other way around. Steel industry, automotive industry, garment industry, all headed overseas once the american unions made it cost prohibitive to run a competitive business in the U.S.

Since the 162 have been laid off in Newark, 30 days ago, here are our crime stats over the last 28 day period, compared to the SAME period last year.
Murder up 29%
Rape up 133%
Robbery up 93%
Agg Assault up 29%
Burglary up 30%
Auto Theft up 67%
Shooting victims up 161%

Arrest are down 51%
Movers are down 43%
Parkers are down 16%
QOL tix are down 60%

Well all the Newark cops had to do was agree to reduced overall compensation and the 162 cops would not have been fired. But evidently it's more important for the rest of the Newark cops to keep their current compensation levels than it is to protect the jobs of their so-called "brethren" or to keep overall crime levels low.

Not only do they get $1,300.00 a year for their work clothes but I'm willing to bet that if one does an audit of the tax returns of the individual members of the JCPD you would see them taking a deduction for the cost of the clothes they are already getting compensated for.
