Re: Homicide investigation in the Heights
Home away from home
Home away from home

i think from now on, whenever someone wants to talk about the heights being overridden with crime, they should mention the neighborhood or surrounding area that they live in, so we can get a good idea of what parts of the heights are good (there are many) and which arent (also many).

for example, i think my area of the heights is safe, i've never had any quality of life issues or anything like that - i live near kennedy and manhattan ave. if you walk around this area you'll see alot of new constructions going up (or well old houses being bought, torn down, and new ones going up); alot of the houses on stagg for example are under 5 yrs old. same with alot of the other side streets. so for me, alls quiet on the western front (of the heights).

edit - yes i know it's a cliche (at least on this board), but it really depends on what block you live on. i wouldnt compare my block to franklin and palisade, for example (although even this area of the heights is slowly getting better). the big problem with characterizing the heights is its size.. now, im no expert on the local DTJC neighborhoods, but i would say that "the heights" is much larger in size and area than say VVP or newport. what many people call the heights stretches from the city line with secaucus to observer highway, and from tonnelle in some parts all the way to the cliffs (at least, thats the general consensus i get for boundaries... could be way off though).

if the next election were based on getting plastered, then healy's got alot to learn (that was what i originally meant to type, but apparently thinking and typing are not my strong points )

Re: Let the Mayoral Campaigning Begin (I've been Push Polled)
Home away from home
Home away from home

to be honest, although i'm not a hardcore healy supporter (or anti-healy either), the push poll didn't really sway my view of him at all. it was really noticeable how they kept using 'embarrassment to jersey city', 'drunk', and other negative terms. and while i didnt know much about manzo's accomplishments, the poll also did little to help me like him more. the one thing i hoped to get out of it (they mentioned a possible e-newsletter that would cover the mayoral candidates and their positions on issues) was really a non -factor since i don't think they ever took my email address or anything like that (i guess it'd be wise to see who is putting out the newsletter since if it's obviously biased then what good is that right? lol).

btw - does anyone know of any newsletters that exist like the one i mentioned? most of my (limited) knowledge of local politics comes from places like nj.com or this forum, but it'd be cool to get more info from other places

this thread title is misleading... when i saw it at first i assumed that our little ole town had a video related to it that was the most viewed on youtube. change the title to " 'betterjc.org commercial #1' - youtube link " !

i got the phone call last night too and decided to go through with the poll (i live in the heights). i too had the negative healy questions and the pro manzo questions, which def. led me to believe it was a pro manzo sorta thing.

my options for answers would randomly switch between numbers (1-5 etc.) or words (most likely lead me to vote for him.. least likely etc), so i dont think that has any bearing on whether they were 2 diff. types of polls or not.

i was surprised to hear schundler's name on the list of candidates - is he actually going to run again?

edit - i'm in my 20's too if that makes a difference. also in the first batch of asking me how likely i was to vote for manzo, i said not likely or something to that effect, after which i was asked about the negative healy stuff and pro manzo stuff.

Re: What are the good neighbourhoods to stay in Jersey City?

i live on the western slope area of the heights (near manhattan ave and kennedy). it's relatively quiet, and no real crime issues i've experienced. rents arent too bad either, and if you find a place near kennedy blvd, there's buses into nyc pretty regularly.

just a thought, the original poster might also look into weehawken if jersey city proves to be too gritty. a quick search on craigslist found a few options within his price range

http://newyork.craigslist.org/search/ ... =1&maxAsk=1500&bedrooms=1

also, weehawken is still an easy commute to NYC, although the buses drop you off in midtown and you'd have to take the subway downtown. still, its probably overall less than an hour anyway, and crime in most parts of weehawken is generally low. the main downside in this area is parking.

i think we should annex the few blocks north of county road so that coach house is a part of jc

also, the new renovations look really nice.. and the food at coach house remains great as always

the one on kennedy and 32nd in north bergen (in the complex with the circuit city) used to be cheap.. idk about now. i think the movies were like 5 bucks and theres plenty of parking (or u can take the bus).

the a&p in hoboken has a huge selection of wine/liquor/beer which you can just bring up and pay at the regular cash registers

i don't think the light rail goes that far. you should just go to lowes in secaucus. it's cheaper than most of the other theaters around here and they have stadium seating IIRC.

a couple of years ago, my college decided to bring colin quinn over for a comedy night. im pretty sure he cost around 15k for the hour long performance; he showed up trashed and was incoherent and not really that funny. i'd take ice-t for the same price any day.

i finally went to this place after reading all the positive things about it here on jcl. i went earlier this week with my gf about lunchtime.. we both had enchiladas, and they were decent. i came back today with my mom + family to give it another shot. they had the brunch menu which was new to me, but i had the chilaquiles, and it was pretty damn good. definitely will be coming back for round 3 in the near future
