Re: Barack Obama for President
Home away from home
Home away from home

i'm pretty sure anyone with even a passing interest in the news (CNN, FOXnews, msnbc) would have seen that presidential elections have historically triggered a big selloff on wall street the next day. the fact that yesterday's sell off was so huge is probably better attributed to the volatile state of the market (which if anyones been watching has seen record gains and losses in the past weeks), rather than the election of obama, which was pretty much a given all the way through last night.

As for the occupants of luxury condos, they won't mug me and don't hit me up for change every time I buy a sandwich.

So neither of them are that bad.

+1 to the 'neither of them are that bad'

also, isn't hipster just a glorified word for 'tool'?

Re: towing at shoprite?

^i think tow2go is advocating that people stand in the shoprite parking lot and warn potential unsuspecting tow victims not to park there. my mom did that once near our house.. one day they put up this 'no left turn from 4-6pm' sign out of nowhere, and she didnt see the sign and got ticketed. she tried to argue with the cop but the sign was there, so she got the ticket anyway. immediately afterward, she went back to the corner and stood there waving at people not to make the turn. i think she stopped at least a dozen cars who also didnt see the sign from making the turn. obviously the cop was not happy but there wasn't much he could do about it lol

i dont know how well received they would be in this area, but you should definitely try montclair for venues. when i was in hs, alot of my friends were into the whole punk/indie band sorta thing, and they would go into montclair just about every weekend to watch bands play... from what they told me, there would generally be pretty large crowds

chili's has their own parking lot adjacent to the restaurant (to the right of the main entrance). ive never once been charged for parking there (i don't even think there's an attendant), but even if an attendant were there, i think that they validate for up to x amount of hours provided you ate at chilis Quote:
So even if you follow a Police Officer's instructions EZ Tow can do as they wish with your property?
the parking lot is private property. a police officer can tell you to light the lot on fire but you'd still get in trouble for it. bottom line, don't park in that lot unless youre going to bj's/shoprite/bbb. i used to park in that lot when i had a summer job in one of the offices in newport towers. i would park the mornings at newport mall, then move it early lunchtime to bj's and then leave it there till 5. cut my parking amount by at least half... didn't get caught once. i think that since then (3 years ago now) they are really cracking down on it alot more. i definitely wouldn't risk it again knowing what i know now.

Re: September start for Powerhouse District's first condos -- Developers "remain bullish" on Downtown

stagnant, just curious - what do you think happens / happened in jc, hoboken, union city, etc. when developers realized they could redo the existing sh*thole tenements and buildings and turn them into condos and sell to nyc business people? did the existing residents a) get great discounts on a 2 BR loft with stunning views of the city, or b) get left in the cold after their existing houses were mysteriously burned down? why should this situation be any different? is it because they are "artists" and do the public some good?

if a person can't afford where they're living, then they need to find a new place they can afford. isn't that the whole point of owning vs. renting.. when you own you have the right to stay where you are, regardless of the economic conditions around you (like rents going up). if you choose to rent for the rest of your life (by you choosing a profession that won't allow you to save enough to purchase in this market), then you should suffer the same consequences as anyone else who is in your shoes and is of a different profession.

Hi!

I recently moved to Jersey City and I know there are a slew of beaches here.

I am wondering if someone can suggest a beach that is fairly close to JC by car(under 1 1/2 hours - or 1 hour) and pretty cool (can go swimming of course, not extremely crowded - tho I know that might be asking for too much - not a high entrance fee, etc)

I know of Sandy Hook...but have never been there...is that a good one ? Or any other suggestions?

Thanks so much!

Bradley Beach, Hands down, less than 1hr from JC, exit 100,
very clean, no amusements and not that crowded on weekdays and the normal on weekends.

Good Luck

CK

just don't get arrested there, i heard that they don't like people from jersey city too much

Cops: Stabbing suspect's mom, sis helped him flee U.S.
by The Jersey Journal
Thursday August 21, 2008, 4:31 AM

The mother and sister of the man charged in the vicious stabbing murder of a Jersey City Heights man have been charged with hindering apprehension for allegedly helping him flee the country after the killing, officials said.

"They provided transportation for him to the airport, made the arrangements for his escape -- his flight to the Dominican Republic --including paying for the same," Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said yesterday of the relatives of accused killer Darwin Rodriguez-Ferreira.

On Sunday, Rodriguez-Ferreira, 21, of Summit and Manhattan avenues, was charged with murdering Mark Kendall, 26, of Summit and Carlton avenues.

Kendall was found with multiple stab wounds -- the most serious to his neck and left arm -- lying between parked cars outside his home at about 5:45 a.m., DeFazio said.

By the time a warrant was issued for Rodriguez-Ferreira's arrest Sunday night, the Dominican national had already hopped a flight back to his country from Kennedy Airport, DeFazio said.
The mother and sister, whose names have not been released, were arrested Tuesday night and are being held in the Hudson County jail in Kearny, DeFazio said.

Read all about it in today's Jersey Journal.

Re: Heights: Authorities hunt suspect after fatal Jersey City stabbing near Pershing Field

heights, save your generalizations and jumping to conclusions for someone else; you know what i meant. it's just as easy for an american national to commit a crime (murder or what have you), and leave the state and never be heard from again. you'll have local enforcement looking for him and unless it's a high profile case and the feds get involved, there's little chance of anyone finding him if he moves to cali or alaska.

and to your sock puppet, did you really just compare catching a 21 year old dominican man to catching the most wanted terrorist in the world? really? i mean i guess since they're both foreigners hiding in their home country, they are similar, making them both hard to catch. or it could be that bin laden has billions of dollars and terrorist cells with more technology than our undermanned military presence has to help him hide. you know, one or the other.

+1

i never bothered to read through the entire lengthy powehouse thread, but i was always under the impression that this was the turn of events that led to this

- artists live in area near bj's / shop rite
- area becomes much more valuable once new buildings pop up nearby (office buildings/ trump, etc)
- developers want to build new condos in area but local artists are firmly opposed since that's their home
- as part of compromise, artists get subsidies to live in these lavish new condos /buildings

im obviously oversimplifying but is that not the gist of it? and if it is, then why do artists get subsidies to stick around while people elsewhere are forced to move it? seems to me like they should knock down the projects on montgomery and then give subsidies to the residents so they can move into the beacon

spa is a decent option after a night of bar hopping in hoboken. not exactly one of my faves but it'll suffice. i have come to hate the alternative in hoboken (malibu diner, uptown).. worst food ever and way way overpriced. if im sober, though, i'll still make the drive to coach house.

vip is 'meh', although every time i've gone there late night there have been rowdy/undesirable clientele inside.
