Discount TILE
Home away from home
Home away from home

We may be finishing our basement in tile on the walls. We'd like to keep costs down (eg, aesthetics are less important than the function of dealing with flooding) and was wondering if anyone has used any discount tile places near/around JC? I think there's one in Newark.

Thanks!

Thanks, MDM, for the advice.

Does anyone know who you'd hire to consult on something like this - e.g., would you hire an surveyor/engineer to evaluate the street/sidewalk slope, etc? Has anyone done that here? We don't want to piss away another several thousand dollars on a mason doing work or something without getting smarter about how water is flowing in, what's really needed, etc.

We've invested thousands of dollars in sumps, trenches etc. and they generally work. Nothing, however, can keep up with the river that 5th becomes during heavy rain. I'm thinking we need to stop the flow before it even hits our basement entrance area.

I noticed several houses have 'walls' some even a foot tall at the top of their steps leading to their basement area/lower apt. For those of you who do, have you ever experienced flooding? Does it help? We are just a bit of a loss having now had 2 3-ft+ flooding.

High tide for the downtown area has already come and gone this morning. Some of you may have already experienced problems--I had a very minor backup into the bathtub. BUT, there is another high tide tonight around 9:30 so please be prepared because with the rain that has fallen, and with the rain that is forecast, it could be bad tonight.

Tide Charts

I keep an eye on this during times of heavy rains. Over the past few years I'v figured out this will give me a better indication of flooding than the amount of rain coming down.

Hoping for the best for everyone (my bathtub water has already begun to recede.)

Yes, thanks - this is great! Are you using Weehawken - I didn't see JC? We also noticed that at high tide last night around 9:30, it seemed to be the straw that broke the camel's back and we started to get trickling.

Hope everyone faired ok yesterday.

I watch the weather when we are away and there was nothing about this storm that caused us any need to be concerned, moreso than the heavy rains of March/April, that's why when our awesome neighbor saw a backup of about a foot near our front area (single family home on 5th near Monmouth), we were shocked. A friend who works for the army corp of engineers said that it was a water main, so maybe he has some intel.

I haven't seen anyone post anything so wondered if we were the only ones who put in a basement trench system and 5 sump pumps and still managed to have 2 inches of water? Our friend said a water main broke - anyone else hear the same thing? We aren't home so our neighbors helped last night - just wondering if anyone knows what happened? Just really heavy rain?

Yes - my comments were based on the JCI blog, not the news article.

Totally agree... I have no sympathy for her situation. She turned a blind eye to their financial problems and now proceeds to publicly expose her problems and relationship. Ick is right.

Compared to deli coffee, sure, on price alone it's expensive... but this is a different caliber of coffee. It's well-priced compared to true 'competitors': Stumptown, Blu Bottle, even Starbucks isn't that cheap (and the quality is better, in my opinion).

Yeah Moby isn't there (hasn't been for quite some time) and I think you're right - he did spawn much of the negative feedback.

I've been there twice in the last 3 weeks. I saw the husband working on the garden there the first time, and the couple there last time. It's expected they may be there less. I've noticed absolutely nothing change in the food.

Just went, excellent latte, second-ing everyone else here.

Current hours are 8-6 (except Monday). He said they'd be open 7-7 every day when they get going. I told him those hours are great, just stick to them (eg, Stockinette opening at 9:20...)

There's a pothole on 5th St near my house (between Coles/Monmouth) that you can see about 2 feet into and the asphalt around it seems to be sinking too. Is the service request form above the best way to report it?

Stroller Recos for JC Streets/PATH
Home away from home
Home away from home

We're first-time parents-to-be and researching strollers (I've seen the City Mini and Uppa, frequently in use).

For any other parents out there, can you recommend (or discourage) a stroller for the often-rough sidewalks of JC that's still lightweight, has easy maneuvering and easy on/off PATH.

Thanks!

That's a real bummer... we would eat there every couple of mos, but admittedly we'd frequently forget it's there. As much as we love Polish food, it's not something we'd make be a weekly meal (or we wouldn't fit through the door).

Hopefully it's replaced with something other than a pizza place or Asian restaurant.

Re: Can Anyone Recommend an Urban Landscaper?
Home away from home

We just used Emma from A Small Green Space to redo our backyard, including replacing a full space of gravel with lovely pavers. She sub-contracts the work out but manages them. She was great to work with (as well as the sub-contractors) and I highly recommend. I thought the price was very reasonable given they did the complete area in pavers. They were quick and leveled the pavers so water runs away from the house (we have major basement flood issues).

Keep in mind she's more of an urban garden designer, so she will charge for concepts and such. If you truly know what you want, she may not be the best choice (not sure).

Stupid Q: how do they measure from the outside? Eg, just length and width? Or do they take into consideration floors. Sorry for the dumb question: we have 1500 over 3 floors, inc our basement.

B&B Moved - Any Other Downtown Mechanics You'd Recommend?
Home away from home
Home away from home

We used to use B&B on Bright St but he moved. Does anyone know where? If not, we'd like to get a new mechanic but they need to be walkable from downtown (easily, e.g., not in the Heights, etc.)

A few mentioned Village on 4th and Brunswick and AM on 6th? These would be ideal, but wasn't sure if they were still recommended.

Thanks!

Anyone ever find pasteurized eggs? Yes, they make pasteurized eggs (by cleaning the shells).
