hey everyone,

just a quick question. we called Platinum and got a quote for some crown molding in our living room and dining room. The guy was great, really nice and professional, but i was a bit shocked at the cost quoted. The total was 2 grand for 2 rooms of crown molding (4 1/2 inch roughly) The total legth is about 60 feet per room.
We may get a 2nd quote, but we did like the guy and from horror stories i've heard, i'd rather go w/ someone w/ good recommendations, but it just seems so high.

anybody have this done and have ideas of costs?

thanks!

2K is extremely high for this job unless you're asking for a stain grade solid hardwood moulding like oak. Is that why it's so high, the materials? Because if you're going to paint it, you really don't need master craftsmen to do this, caulking is amazing stuff. BTW- never miter the inside corners, they must be coped, google it.

No, it is DOWNTOWN. It is east of Baldwin/Summit/Garfield and south of Hoboken therefore it is DOWNTOWN. Those are the boundries of DOWNTOWN. You can look it up on a map but there is really no need to because I said it's true. It is most definately DOWNTOWN. That is where the shootout involving the federal fugitive occurred, in DOWNTOWN. Incidentally, that is where most of the federal fugitives like to spend their time, DOWNTOWN. They especially like the Van Vorst Park Historic District. They like it there because it has nice things and a dog run. They often gather in the park in the afternoons to chat and play checkers. They like DOWNTOWN because the lights are much brighter there. They can forget all their troubles forget all their cares and go DOWNTOWN.

Exactly how liberal are we talking? This church is REALLY liberal. I don't know if they have a parish in JC but if they do I'm sure it's downtown somewhere. They might want you to wear a goathead suit which might be uncomfortable in the summer months.

Re: Where are our pets buried?
Home away from home
Home away from home

In urban areas, it has been a long standing tradition to send our pets off with a dignified "burial at sea" ceremony. This , of course, is only suitable for smaller animals and fish (use your judgement). The deceased is lovingly placed in the ceremonial vessel and family and friends gather round in a semicircle. It is customary to say a few words, a short eulogy perhaps. Sometimes, the animal's favorite song will be played on a boombox during the ceremony. You can play Taps on a kazoo or harmonica and fire off a gun salute with cap guns if appropriate. After the eulogy and prayers, the lid is closed in solemn fashion and the flush handle gently but firmly depressed. The mourners file out one by one, pausing at the vessel to pay their final respects before joining the repast at the local pizza place or McDonalds.

If the judge doesn't drop it, then just pay it. If he didn't drop it because of your letter, he's not going to drop it in court. This way you've only wasted and hour or two of your time instead of a whole day.

is writing a letter instead of appearing acceptable in jersey city or must you appear in court to fight the parking ticket. i was just wondering if anyone has done this here and if so how you went about it. thanks

No, you can write a letter well in advance of the court date and see how that works out but don't just blow off the court date and not show unless they tell you so. In fact, even if they do tell you that you don't have to show up, I would still show up anyway to personally see to it that your case is officially dismissed. If there is one thing the Municipal court is efficient at, it's automatically issuing warrents for failure to appear. Then you will be a fugitive, hunted like an animal, on the lam for the rest of your life, ducking into doorways whenever you see a police car, only leaving the house after dark, afraid to answer the door even for the pizza guy, answering the phone in a strange foreign accent pretending you are the cleaning lady, changing your hair color every week, getting plastic surgery and having your fingerprints removed and ultimately moving to some uncharted remote location where they could never find you, like Society Hill or Port Liberte.

For me the equation is simple, all i ask for is a place close to my work, that is relatively safe, and easily accessible to to mass transit, and now I'm probably going to be forced to move farther away from my job, away from my home, for what?

The pricing is being dictated by how much renters are willing to pay. Your equation " relatively safe, easily accesible to mass transit, close to my work" is why you are overpaying now and why your landlord is raising your rent. You can get a comparable and probably much better apartment in another area for $1000-$1300 but it might not be in a cool area. Unless, of course, you deem it cool. Then it would be cool and cheaper. All you gotta do is deem it cool.

Re: Heights - The Price of New Construction?
Home away from home
Home away from home

I am doing some renovations. Today I tore apart a kitchen cupboard, one of the last few original details left in this house. It has glass doors on top and a little counter and drawers on the bottom. I stripped the paint from the upper part and will rebuild the doors but the lower part was too far gone to save, 100 + years of paint layers, it was not salvagable. So, as I took the Sawzall to the lower faceframe, I find that it was mortised and tennoned together, not just nailed together. Someone put some real work and sweat into this thing. I felt bad, like I was commiting a sin, I was. You can google "mortise and tennon" if you don't know. The mortise was cut with a chisel and the tennon was cut with a saw, there were 8 of these joints on the small part I demolished and they still held strong. The drawer bottoms are 20" wide solid 1/4" thick clear pine, not plywood, this cannot be found anymore, I am saving this wood. Since I have been doing this work and taking things apart, I often think about the people who put it together. I always look for a note or someone's initials or a date penciled on the back of a peice of wood, I never find any, they didn't have time for time capsule notes. I imagine men in overalls with handlebar mustaches, pencil behind the ear, Irish or German. They went to work early, probably walked or on horse drawn trolley and carried their lunches with them. They lived in the tenements with their wives and children, they didn't own the houses they built, worked six days a week, wore themselves out, died young. All the materials for this house were delivered by horse and wagon and carried upstairs by hand or with block and tackle. Tons of plaster, thousands of feet of wood lath. The plaster had horse hair in it as a binder, the way we use fiberglass today in concrete.
So anyway, what I'm saying is, I hate tearing apart another man's well done work. Even if he lived 100 years ago, especially if he lived 100 years ago. I will replace it, I promise, but it will have European self closing hinges and ball bearing drawer slides.

Wear and tear is not a valid excuse. If the insurance co. sues you, they will be trying to recover the entire amount not the deductable.

This reroute was most likely an agreement with the city to provide bus service on Central Ave. Probably at the behest of the Central Ave. Merchants Association. When I was a kid, when I was a boy, there was a Central Ave. bus line that ran on time and often to the Square, it cost a dime or 15 cents and you rode in a real bus dammit. The deregulation of the established bus lines was the worst thing that ever happened to public transportation. I usually drive these days but when i have to take public trans, I dread it. I don't know where these yahoo vans go or how much they cost. You have to stop them and ask "do you go to Journal Square?" They usually grunt in reply. And they drive like cab drivers. I dunno, I dunno anymore.

Re: Wooden Stoops

In my superior opinion, wooden stoops excell. Masonry, contrary to popular opinion, does not last forever. Is is highly susceptable to freeze thaw cycles and when it starts to detoriorate is very difficult to repair. I just had a masonry stoop replaced after many years of reparing it myself, it was costly. If I had a wooden stoop, I would have happily repaired or replaced it myself but the hassle of demolishing and rebuilding a masonry stoop is a nightmare. Wood is extremely durable if it is not in contact with dirt or standing water. And it's not cold and clammy to sit on.

Thanks
Any help would be appreciated!

What you have in the pic is called a mortise lock. They are more complicated and more expensive than cylinder locks. If it's not broken and your main concern is security, I would just leave it alone and add another cylinder deadbolt above it. You can probably get the new lock keyed to the old lock (same key) if you buy it from a locksmith. As someone mentioned, the weak point in door locks is always the jamb. Typical JC burgler does not have the brains to pick a lock, they will muscle the door open. Look into replacing the strike plates with larger heavier steel plates with several long heavy screws that extend deep into the stud behind the jamb. Oh, if you live in a new construction condo ( are you listening burglers?) with sheetrock walls. Did you know you can cut a hole in the sheetrock next to the lock with a drywall saw and reach in to unlock the door? So if you're really into security you might consider openning up the wall next to the door jamb and filling the stud bays with 3/4" plywood in the area around the lock.
