Re: Fulop Shuts Down PSEG in Jersey City

Project documentation for the replacement of aging gas piping, whose scope also includes excavation, backfilling and patching, would presumably have been filed with the appropriate city agencies like any construction project. Therefore, the scope of work would have already been known to the city before the permits were even issued, and the omission of repaving would have been a rather conspicuous item.

Any project should be held to all applicable standards and ordinances, but this ?revelation? also looks like an embarrassment for city administrators.

I agree, the dry-aged flavor intensity of the Black Label does vary from visit to visit. I?m looking forward to trying the others you mentioned though, thanks.

For what it?s worth, the front room and bar are often completely empty after the weekday lunch rush.

I realize this is getting further off-topic, and to be fair I?ve never had the regular Minetta burger, but for my taste the Black Label has been consistently sublime, including the one I ate last Friday. I also find it better not to eat it more than once every few months to avoid becoming jaded, an all-too-common affliction.

Restaraunts like McDonalds, Taco Bell, Applebee's and TGI Fridays should rein supreme if your theory is correct. But instead we avoid those places and seek out new restaraunts and cafes that open up. Same will happen eventually with the big box store format.

I applaud your optimism, but you may be failing to account for millions of consumers who don?t feel likewise, and vast regions of the country that aren?t remotely metropolitan. As far as big-box stores go, there?s no competing with them for mass produced consumer goods. They can offer the low prices they do because they deal in volume, and that volume allows them to survive on low profit margins. A small time retailer can?t do that kind of volume and would have to raise prices to uncompetitive levels. It?s unfortunate, but that?s how it is and will most likely continue to be.

Quality is certainly playing a larger role in the American consciousness, particularly in affluent urban centers, but do you really believe that the trend of large corporations outcompeting independent butchers, bakers and candlestick-makers, and their conspicuous domination of the overall market will reverse course?

I hear you, but any new station would have cost billions, and if there was any place in America to spend that kind of money on world-class architecture for its own sake, that was probably it. A less ambitious plan would probably have still required impossible sums of money to fix decades of neglect throughout the system.

I had a similar experience on Saturday and saw that work was being performed on the Hackensack River bridge, where one of the tracks was occupied by a service car.

PATH is certainly deserving of criticism, but their problem is symptomatic of our neglected and failing infrastructure throughout the nation. It doesn?t matter who hears our voices, the solution to the problem is money that isn?t there because of taxes we don?t want to pay, and that our government doesn't want to allocate.

Thanks to that fence, whatever activity the self-proclaimed ?expert? consultant who recommended it was concerned about, can now be carried out with greater privacy, assuming that a would-be perpetrator had the unheard of magical ability to scale or cut a hole in a fence. And then a federal agency gave the thumbs-up to install a very large, high pressure gas pipeline right there?!

Lip service, all of it. These funds could be used to address public health and safety issues we already have, and make a noticeable difference for it. Meanwhile, how much money has the FBI spent on masterminding and foiling its own plots?practices that manipulate public perception and ruin lives but do nothing to enhance safety. But I digress?

Re: Sushi Tango

I'm a glutton for maki drowning in spicy mayo like anyone else, and one of Honshu's signature appetizers in particular does not disappoint in that regard, but I don't understand why superlatives are so often used to describe their sushi, which presumably includes nigiri. Despite many attempts over the years, I've consistently found Honshu's nigiri no better than the local competition. There's plenty of delicious maki in Jersey City, including Honshu's, but for simpler preparations where the fish is everything, flavor and texture almost always fall short of expense and expectation.

Meanwhile for lunch today, I had some of the nicest tuna, yellowtail, and salmon nigiri at an old, funky smelling, hole-in-the-wall fish store at 62nd and 1st Ave (Roy's Fish and Sushi, a.k.a. Pom's). Great fish is out there, but not every restaurant is interested in buying it.

That?s excellent point, papadage. An understanding of my own psychological traits in combination with my life experience indeed plays a strong role in my attitude toward issues involving race.

It has also given me very good insight into the conscious and unconscious motivating factors behind racism and racist speech, as well the ability to easily recognize coded racism for what it is. Unfortunately, there are many people for whom all of this is a mystery.

It?s just a coincidental relationship.

People who are strongly motivated by fear tend to be drawn in larger numbers toward the conservative values embraced by the Republican party. Racism, which?let?s face it--is a form of irrational fear, is therefore be more likely to be found among Republicans. No mystery there.

I?m not familiar with our local building codes, but for what it?s worth, the 2012 International Residential code prescribes a minimum live load capacity of 40 pounds per square foot (PSF) for exterior balconies and decks. Meanwhile, the loading imposed by an 8 foot diameter, 650 gallon pool would be slightly over 100 PSF across its footprint. Given that first-cost is so crucial in residential construction, I wouldn?t expect the design to exceed the minimum requirement by a factor of 2.5x, but who knows.

Area loading is the operative concept, not just the total weight. A 30?x12? deck rated for 40 PSF could technically accommodate a total of 14,400 lbs., which is a lot heavier than 650 gallons of water (5,400 lbs.), but only if that weight is distributed across the entire deck structure.

I hope this helps, but the only way to know with any certainty is to investigate the original design criteria or hire an expert to evaluate the construction.

Now we can all rest assured that we?re not part of any complex socioeconomic problems, otherwise, who knows what our ego defenses might lead us to say.

Like Robin, I also have greater faith in Newton?s first law of motion than I do other drivers. I don?t cross any intersection where I?m stopped?whether on foot, on a bicycle, or in a car?without first making sure that an approaching car on an intersecting course is decelerating. I don?t know which blessed rule that violates, but it certainly respects the laws of physics and the consequences of ignoring them.

For starters, detaining and searching an individual would have to occur only in the light of reasonable suspicion as intended. That hasn?t been the case, and excessively liberal interpretations by many law enforcement officers are the reason it has become a subject of contention.

A practice that?s incompatible with the ideals of American personal freedom is probably not a good policy, regardless of whether it has the intended results.

I don?t know how often suspects are positively identified by members of the public thanks to brief written descriptions in the paper, but in lieu of more information, here?s a novel idea:

If you have any information pertaining to any stabbing, consider notifying the police regardless. Unfortunately, this approach could lead to other suspects from other crimes being apprehended, but that?s the risk you?ll have to take until all those liberals stop giving your finger something to point at.
