Re: Jersey City to have great view of 3 Cunard Queen ships together in harbor -- Jan 13th 2008

Home away from home

I thought it would be more of a rendezvous and less of a lineup. The ships were kinda far apart, and hung out in the harbor for only a moment before moving on.

Still, as far as nerd Jersey things to do on a Sunday night go, it was pretty cool.

Went last Friday and had another awesome meal. The place was packed, so I got to experience the acoustics at full holler. Kinda loud, sure, but still way better than the blasting music at that place on Grove Street. I forget the name...you know...the place that blasts the music.

Had the oxtail app. and that salad with the goat cheese. Date had the same. Cooked/tossed beautifully.

Adorable waitress Meghan came over to apologize for the delay in getting our food, but we hadn't even noticed.

We'd arrived late and ended up closing the place, but nobody tried to rush us out. Was a great, relaxing night out.

Re: Local Veterinarian

Animal Infirmary of Hoboken and Downtown Veterinary in Jersey City (on 1st) are both run by Dr. Tudor, who is awesome.

I've been bringing my crowd to him - at both locations - for nearly 4 years. They give great medical care for very reasonable fees.

He has a huge staff of vets who circulate among all three practices (there's another in Bayonne), so you may not always get the same vet each visit. That's the only downside I've ever encountered there.

Downtown vet is close to the Grove Street Path (and cab stand).

I've also had a lousy experience at the one on Washington Street in Hoboken, and would never go back there. That place is steadily building a bad reputation among Hudson County pet owners.

Congratulations on your new addition.

I wonder if next we'll be reading about the retaliatory murder of a few residents on Kennedy Blvd near Manhattan Avenue.

was it necessary to print that part of the story?

might people think twice before tipping off the cops now?
or am I just being paranoid...

JC Parking Authority targeting Zipcars?
Home away from home
Home away from home

Just got an email from Zipcar that they're billing me $64 for an unpaid JC parking ticket.

On the day in question, I was parked at a meter (which I paid).

Ironically, I was parked in front of the JC Parking Authority, getting a visitor's pass that I'm not even sure I needed, but that's a different headache.

There was no ticket on the car when I returned, and like I said, I had filled the meter with plenty of quarters. But how can I prove this to Zipcar when they're getting notice of an unpaid ticket?

Don't know if this was just another random incident of JCPA ineptitude, or if they spotted the big green Zipcar logo and somehow knew that the ticket would be automatically paid and charged back to me, with no proof whatsoever.

Got a bogus ticket on my sister's car, too, and I'm convinced that her out-of-town plates brought it on. Who's going to fight a parking ticket from three states away.

That's 2 bogus tickets in 3 months, and I don't even own a car.

and all I'm saying - and then I promise to let this go - is that if spending 10 fewer minutes in your very own taxi means waiting on line for an extra half hour, and paying more for the privilige, what have you gained? a Pyrrhic victory.

a trip from the Hoboken Path to anywhere (in Hoboken) is $4. do you think it would stay that cheap if they switched to a one-person system? do you think they would add more cabs, or just make everybody wait 3x longer for an available ride?

I like Hoboken's cab share system. It's cheaper, environmentally-friendly, and makes the line move 3x faster.

I'm as big a critic of the JC police as the next guy, but come on....Hand Grenades!

If the OP had logged on and said, "can you believe I had a house full of EMT guys, and not one of them said anything about the hand grenades lying there in plain view?!" this list would've gone ballistic.

They definitely went overboard with the response (what's next, tanks and choppers?) but again, they found HAND GRENADES.

sheesh.

here's a related question:

I connect to the internet (Comcast's internet) via an airport wireless port, which is password-protected.

sometimes my connection is painfully slow, the kind of slow you get when a dozen people are using the same hub. is this because of Comcast, or has someone hacked in to my wireless access?

GREAT opening night!

we had the oxtail appetizer, the pear/gorganzola salad, the pork belly and the duck.

everything was cooked to perfection and the timing of the courses was spot-on.

our waiter (didn't get his name, damn) was attentive and the ambiance was relaxed and welcoming.

we were too full for dessert, but there's always next time. and there will be a next time, and a time after that.

think I've found my new favorite local.

your renter's insurance premiums will be a lot higher if you don't have security on the windows, etc.

and they make security bars with a quick-release latch in case of fire.

thanks for the bus link, JSQ! but you're mistaken about the Light Rail. closest stop is Pavonia/Newport, which is a bit of a schlep from Target & the A&P, especially if you're carrying packages.
