Re: ‘It’s like a speedway’ -- Downtowners want to slow traffic...

Only slightly off topic. Stood on the corner of Jersey and Montgomery Streets and watch three cars go through a red light. Not yellow. Red. And three cars.

Just as I thought. I'm a comparatively small person who generally walks the escalators at WTC. I would never think of passing on the Grove Street escalator. Too narrow and too short.

wibbit, getting prints off the knife is a logical first step, if there are any. But if the prints, if recoverable at all, are not in any system, then it's no help.

So why can't the second car see that the light is turning red too? Shouldn't he also be stopping too?

No need at all. A nanny can be fired. Kids are stuck with lousy parents, unless they really get wild.

I doubt they're any worse than the parents and, in my experience as a parent and former employer of a nanny, they're usually better.

It looks as though the sweet little book store on Jersey Avenue didn't make it. Not surprised. It was a nice store but never had what I wanted.

One other point. I had both my children when I was over 35. I was not considered high risk either time. So make no assumptions. If a doctor considers you high risk, find out why -- because it means more testing, more monitoring, and it may not be necessary if your only risk factor is your age. Caution is good, but unnecessary testing has its own risks.

I delivered both children at NY/Cornell with the best doctor in the world. SInce you probably don't want to schlep up to 75 and Fifth, I would offer you just one piece of advice. Make sure your doctor delivers at a hospital with a Level 1 NICU. You never know when you'll need it. My younger son would not have made it if I had not been at a great hospital with a top notch NICU. If that's Hackensack or St. Barnabas on this side of the river, then that's where you need to go.

If you want to go to Manhattan, my doctor walks on water...but doesn't take insurance.

I've lived down the street on the other side of Montgomery for 12 years. Have not heard of problems. In fact, I always chuckle at the little bus for 3 blocks of walking. I'm sure it's handy in the pouring rain or late at night, but otherwise I've never had any problems walking up Columbus -- except for the occasional construction project.

I find that a facile and nonsensical distinction. Even as a kid, I could never understand the joy that others would take in destroying someone else's things -- whether it be slashing tires, keying a car, or grafitti. It's a petty power trip the people have something real in their lives don't do.

I see the point you all are making. I've also read that side collisions from running reds are far more damaging than rear end collisions. I'm also wondering why all the folks are running into the guy who stopped. If they're behind someone who should be stopping, why aren't they stopping too? Maybe there's a learning curve -- or maybe they need to stop speeding as well. It seems that a lot of the rear end accidents can be averted by lengthening the timer on the yellow light.

Friday's Jersey Journal reported that Susan Kolb, the owner of the Paulus Hook mastiffs who attacked a young man, will have a hearing at Jersey City Municipal Court, 365 SUMMIT Ave, on Tuesday, 2/3, at 1 pm.

http://www.nj.com/news/jjournal/jerse ... 23330036231670.xml&coll=3

Are there any members who are able to attend? This hearing is a probable cause hearing, where a judge would determine if there is enough proof for the case to proceed to a grand jury and possibly criminal court. Irene, member and lawyer, will try to be there by 1pm. This dog owner has been a problem for other law abiding dog owners.

Please reply to this email if you can attend.

Thanks!
Pam

The right on red thing is what gets pedestrians. Lots of drivers don't bother to stop before turning right where there's no oncoming traffic from the left - totally ignoring people standing on the right corner waiting to cross. I've seen some hair raising things at the corner of Montgomery and Jersey involving mothers with children on the way to school.

As in so many areas, you can find studies and anecdotal evidence to support both sides. Dallas is having second thoughts on continuing its red light surveillance because its working too well.

Dallas' red light cameras may face changes as revenue estimate drops

Dallas' system works too well, eating into revenues, fueling possible changes

12:00 AM CDT on Saturday, March 15, 2008
By DAVE LEVINTHAL / The Dallas Morning News
dlevinthal@dallasnews.com

Dallas City Hall has idled more than one-fourth of the 62 cameras that monitor busy intersections because many of them are failing to generate enough red-light-running fines to justify their operational costs, according to city documents.

Initial gross revenue estimates for the red light camera system during Dallas' 2007-08 fiscal year were $14.8 million, according to city records. The latest estimate? About $6.2 million. City Manager Mary Suhm on Friday estimated net revenue will fall $4.1 million under initial estimates.

That leaves Dallas government with a conundrum. Its red-light camera system has been an effective deterrent to motorists running red lights ? some monitored intersections have experienced a more than 50 percent reduction. But decreased revenue from red light-running violations means significantly less revenue to maintain the camera program and otherwise fuel the city's general fund.

Exacerbating the drain is a new state law requiring that municipalities send half of their net red-light-running camera revenue to Austin and post signs alerting drivers of upcoming camera installations. Also, city records indicate Dallas has lengthened yellow-light intervals on 12 of its 62 monitored traffic signals, giving motorists more time to beat a red light.

City transportation officials say they're brainstorming potential changes to the red-light camera program, which is financed by the general fund, before a planned update to the City Council next month on the program's status.

"We did not anticipate having such success so early with the number of people not running red lights," said Zaida Basora, Dallas' assistant director of public works and transportation. "If you have success in safety, you don't have a lot of success in revenue. The other side is the people will go back to what they were doing before without the cameras."

A cell phone? The woman was using a walker. It takes two hands to use a walker. Can we stop blaming the victim, please?

And whether or not a pedestrian, who has right of way in cross walk, was using a phone is immaterial as to the driver stopping after hitting the woman -- or in this case, the second driver stopping as well.
