it's actually not that hard to tap someone on the shoulder and say, "could you please take your backpack off? it's taking up a lot of space."

try it. you'll be surprised.

it probably doesn't need THAT much breathing room.

why rumble strips - which seem designed for optimum neighbor annoyance, without deterring speeders - and not just a couple of good old-fashioned speed bumps?

Re: Security Deposit

Home away from home

I had a bully of a landlord pull this stunt on me in Los Angeles, with a significanly larger deposit at stake.

I was so eager just to get him out of my life that I let it go.

he has made a habit of - and a fortune by - doing this to tenants, most of whom are busy professionals who just "let it go."

if I had it to do over, I'd totally take his creepy ass to court.

so on behalf of every wronged tenant, please don't let your jerk of a landlady get away with this.

let us know how it goes!

JClxs, if you will share your home address with the yuppie scum of JClist, we will happily wheel over all of the charm we find parked in front of our houses.

as a bonus, you can even have the trash that's filling the charm.

that way, you can have all the richness of the urban landscape to yourself, while we settle for a more miserable, charm-free existence.

it's win-win, really.

Re: Local Veterinarian

for years, the vet on Washington street was the only option in Hoboken, so they got away with outrageous charges and mediocre care.

when the infirmary opened, pet owners rejoiced. there was a huge defection from Hoboken Vet, and from what I've heard, there's been no reason to return.

the infirmary (and now Downtown Vet here in JC) have always given my pack of misfits excellent care, without bankrupting the biped at the other end of the leash.

good luck.

Re: Keeping Grove St. PATH clean!

Home away from home

thanks for the suggestion, Jaah, but I've put my own can out there, which most people are considerate enough to use for litter. I'm opening myself up to a fine, though, by having a can in sight on non-pickup nights.

if the JCIA is anything like their buddies in the JCPA, I bet that calling them will simply result in a fine for me, and continued trash left by others.

one brilliant neighbor left a bag full of junk mail, which had her name and address all over it. I left the bag on her stoop with a note, saying "I believe this is yours."

Re: Keeping Grove St. PATH clean!

it's not vandals who've cost us our public trash cans. it's people filling them up with bags of household garbage.

we have curbside pickups twice-weekly, yet some entitled JC residents can't bear to hold onto their own trash, and instead inflict it on their neighbors, causing the corner cans to overflow and, subsequently, get taken away by the fed-up city.

I live in a corner building, and at least twice a week I come home to a present left by one of my neighbors, in the form of boxes, old computers and bags of trash that they can't keep in their apartments for the two days until the next pickup.

they don't want it in their way, so I get it in mine, and the whole corner area looks like a ghetto because of it.

thanks, neighbors.

I've really been feeling left out of this thread, having lived a relatively cart-free existence.

until last night, when I arrived home to find one right in front of my stoop, blocking the way to my front door, like a shiny red sentinel.

my very own cart!

I am now a real member of the community.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Carlin, briefly, at a Comic Relief event about a dozen or so years ago. He was a real class act, extremely gracious to the crew and even to the star-struck PA who inadvertently interrupted his rehearsal in a rush to say hello.

I suppose it's too late to apologize for that.

Sigh. A damn fine fella.

was anyone else foolish enough to take one of the white cards they were handing out at the turnstiles during the pm commute yesterday?

it was an apology note for Tuesday's service suspension.

I got up to the platform at 23rd street, and it was littered with white cards, some blowing onto the tracks.

they looked kinda flammable.

Re: Sick and tired of the Latin Lounge

it's true. some bars (and their patrons) are douchier than others.

I lived 30 feet from the Goldhawk, in Hoboken, and slept quite peacefully, no matter how many (considerate, grownup) smokers were lingering outside.

the mood would change drastically at 2am, when the frat boys would spill out of 10th and Willow and scream their way home, pausing only to throw a trashcan or piss in a doorway.

10th & Willow was a block and a half away from my apartment, and was exponentially more disruptive than the bar right across the street.

(Belated thanks to Fran at Goldhawk for respecting his neighbors.)

riding home late tonight, my friends and I sat down, and five guys stood in front of us. they were together, chatting.

the train started moving, and as soon as that crowd raised their arms to hold on, the rest of us nearly choked to death.

worst. b-o. ever. times five. pouring forth from the row of armpits like radiation from chernobyl.

question: has anyone ever asked someone to put his arm down, for the health and happiness of his fellow passengers? is there a polite way to do this?

still gasping,
JCB

uh, the STOP sign at said crosswalk would probably be a good reason to, I dunno....stop? whether or not there are pedestrians present.

it's not exactly "making up the rules," it's following them.
