Hey CK, I'm curious. Which JC school granted you a diploma?

It shouldn;t be a surprise to anyone that the JC school system is below avg with a high percentage of iliterates
as students.....

Amazing .

My impression from visiting some schools is that the decent schools in the JC system probably do a pretty good job of teaching the basics to kids who come to school with any readiness to learn.

One problem is that some of the kids are seriously messed up before they get to the school, and it's not clear whether the schools are good at helping kids who have the basics down but need help at getting to the McNair kid level.

I haven't yet compared schools by checking the percentage of kids who score at an "advanced" level, as opposed to the "proficient" level, on the state tests, because, surprise surprise, the state makes comparing schools by the advanced scores hard to do.

My rough impression is that most downtown and Jersey City Heights schools do pretty well in terms of how many get proficient scores but a lot worse in terms of how many get advanced scores.

I also get the feeling, from talking to Jersey City public school alumni, that the kids in the gifted track classes get more of the same work that the other kids are doing, not work that is really designed to challenge kids who've already learned basics.

Of course, if there are are recent Jersey City public school alumni reading this, you know a lot more about how all of this works than I do, and I'd really be grateful if you'd write here about what you think about the schools.

According to my spellchecker, it's spelled "illiterates"
