Thanks for all of the sugestions. Keep 'em coming! I am not going ot need to move until June at the earliest, maybe even longer. The tenants are starting to organize and we are investigating our full rights, including the amount of time they have to give the non-buying tenants to move out.

Our last landlord was definitely one of the good ones. She has two buildings in Hamilton Park--one she charges a lot for, and one she keeps at a very low price for moderate income folks. (She advertised in the Jersey City Reporter, so you may want to check there while searching.)

We, unfortunately, just bit the bullet and moved to Journal Square after searching in vain for a bigger place we could afford. I've seen other friends have to leave downtown as well over the past 2 years--good people with good jobs, but not making enough to afford $1700 on a studio apt.!

OneSkirt, you may want to contact Jasco. They have a building on 5th Street, and we paid $950 for a nice little one bedroom there a few years back. (My friend lives there now, for the same amount, and he's very happy.)

Hi One Skirt. I believe that Newport still has a moderate income program. Marine View Plaza in Hoboken is also moderate income though I am not sure if you need to be a Hoboken resident. There are programs out there. You should be able to get some help from the city on where they are and how to apply. Perhaps Steven Fulop's office could steer you in the right direction.

You should also look on Craigslist. I found my place there. Just look for places that have no realtor fee or realtor mentioned and you will be ok. Took me about 3 days of searching there to find a good place. I am still there now.

If you want to find a decently priced rental, you should
probably start walking the streets and looking
for For Rent signs in windows. There is still a
portion of good conscience folk here who have
not the heart to rob other folks looking for a
place to live. Stay away from realtors, as they
are the main problem regarding high rent;

You can do it on your own, if you start early
and leave yourself time to do the research.

It depends on the building. But normally, to qualify you have to have a "moderate income", usually in the mid $30s to $40k. In my case, my rent is about 2/3 what my neighbor pays for the same apt. right next door.

Well, having just found out that in 9 short months I may have to leave my moderate income level rental unit in Dixon Mills, I am stressed out. Seems that everything around here is all condos now.

So my question - does anyone know of any buildings (new or old) that offer moderate income units anymore?
