Yeah, it's true that the VIP is notorious for it's high turnover of foul mouthed waitresses, but some of the customers can be no better.
Once I was there and there was a nice lithianian immigrant girl serving us, and the couple in the next booth were being very rude and mean to her for no good reason.

Al's is the best in JC. But I rarely go there cuz VIP is so much closer to me. While the food will never knock anyone's socks off, it's okay. I find it relaxing and it's never crowded. And reliable. Diners are kinda like chains... you know what to expect even though those expectations might not be very high. One of the problems with some downtown places (I emphasize some, not all by any means) is that it's often a crapshoot. I've gone to several places that are closed despite posted hours that indicate otherwise, or the wait is forever or it's overpriced or crowded or attitudinal.

Food's okay... just watch out for the crackheaded waitress I had a while back. She basically verbally assaulted us the entire time ("Do you know what you want yet? Come on!" - and that was her first stop to our table), and stuck half of her thumb in my refill of soda. No joke. As well, a couple of folks I'm good pals with have had some bad experiences with, well, bugs in the food. Maybe things have improved since (I haven't been there in at least a year), but I'm in no rush to return.

And cyclotronic's right - Al's is a really good diner. Can't beat their Soup, Salad and 1/2 Sandwich deal - and their chocolate shakes are INCREDIBLE. Really good stuff.

I do appreciate that it's on my walk home from the PATH and is 24 hour, but the VIP is a pretty crappy diner. Al's Diner on Communipaw is much better. The Colonette on 440 is also good.

I haven't been there in nearly a decade. VIP used to be our late night (early morning?) spot after a night of dancing in the city during my high school (yup, I started early) and early college years.

Maybe it's time for another visit.

Does anyone else hang out at the VIP Diner? What do you think? I like the stir fry steak dinner specials and strawberry milkshakes even though service is "leisurely" at times. I also like the 50's style mini jukeboxes at each booth, and how when you go there there is always some interesting conversation to evesdrop on.
I would like to hear your reviews.
