Off-Duty Cops In New Jersey Can Now Use Recreational Weed — And Some Cities Are Concerned

Off-duty police officers in New Jersey can now legally use recreational marijuana after the first sales in the state began last week.

Since 2012, 18 states and the District of Colombia have decriminalized recreational marijuana, but when New Jersey passed legislation last year to legalize recreational weed, no prohibition carve-out for police officers was adopted.

“Anyone 21 and older can now legally buy weed in New Jersey. And, at least according to the law as written, that includes police officers,” Fox 5 New York reported Friday.

Some municipalities said they will continue to stop law enforcement officials from using recreational marijuana as Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop plans to continue testing his city’s police force for weed and firing those who test positive.

Fulop: Jersey City Won't Put 'Arbitary Limits' On How Many Retail Cannabis Businesses Can Open

JERSEY CITY, NJ — With New Jersey’s recreational marijuana marketplace officially set to open, Jersey City officials say they remain committed to keeping an open mind to the state’s budding new industry.

Shortly after the state's announcement Thursday that people age 21 and up will be able to legally purchase cannabis without a medical card starting April 21, Mayor Steven Fulop said in a tweet, “Missed opportunity by not doing on 4/20.”

April 20, or 4/20 is often marked as a significant day in the cannabis culture.

Seven Jersey City retail cannabis applicants get planning board approval

Seven Jersey City retail cannabis applicants received planning board approval during a special meeting last night, setting them on the path to do business in the city.

The applicants are spread out across the city, and if approved by the city’s cannabis board and state regulators, would be among the first line of retail marijuana stores in the city to open up following the legalization of marijuana in New Jersey last year. The stores would be located in neighborhoods such as the Heights, Journal Square and Downtown.

N.J. weed workers moving full steam ahead to unionize despite delay in cannabis market

EDITOR’S NOTE: NJ Cannabis Insider, NJ.com’s B2B cannabis industry trade journal and events vertical, is hosting a business meetup Feb. 17 in Jersey City. Tickets are limited.

Union fever is spreading like wildfire among the state’s cannabis workers even though the adult use recreational market has yet to open up.

The workers prepping for that day say they want careers, not just jobs, and that’s spurring union drives throughout New Jersey.

N.J. legal weed growers brace for layoffs, ‘destroying product’ if consumer market doesn’t open soon

EDITOR’S NOTE: NJ Cannabis Insider, NJ.com’s B2B cannabis industry trade journal and events vertical, is hosting a business meetup Feb. 17 in Jersey City. Tickets are limited.

Like many of New Jersey’s residents who voted to legalize weed for adult consumers, the state’s largest growers say they’ve been eager for the market to open.

In fact, they say they’re bursting at the seams with marijuana — and now, they’re worried they’ll have to take drastic measures if things don’t speed up.

Murphy says he’d rather be right than fast as N.J. may delay recreational weed sales

EDITOR’S NOTE: NJ Cannabis Insider, NJ.com’s B2B cannabis industry trade journal and events vertical, is hosting a business meetup Feb. 17 in Jersey City. Tickets are limited.

Gov. Phil Murphy, who successfully pushed to legalize cannabis for recreational use, said he wasn’t concerned that the state may not meet a Feb. 22 deadline for selling weed to the public.

“I’d rather get it right than get it fast,” Murphy told NJ Advance Media on Sunday. “They’re doing a really good job. They want to do a job that’s different and better than any other state that’s ever done it, in particular as it relates to addressing inequities, which has been a central theme of mine.”

N.J. legal weed sales won’t start in February; state to miss key deadline

EDITOR’S NOTE: NJ Cannabis Insider, NJ.com’s B2B cannabis industry trade journal and events vertical, is hosting a business meetup Feb. 17 in Jersey City. Tickets are limited.

While promising to open New Jersey’s legal cannabis consumer market, the state won’t meet a self-imposed deadline originally set for late February.

Jeff Brown, the executive director of the state Cannabis Regulatory Commission, said a number of factors are still in the way before the doors can open, including lack of municipal buy-in.

With legal weed market to open soon, N.J. cannabis industry buzzing ahead of big networking event Feb. 17

The state hasn’t yet opened New Jersey’s legal cannabis marketplace, but it has been awarding operating permits as well as accepting more applications to grow and sell.

Set up last year to provide the rules and regulations for the industry to operate under, the state’s Cannabis Regulatory Commission has been working toward opening the adult, general consumer market by February 2022. We may know more this week after the CRC’s upcoming public meeting on Jan. 27.

City Council seeks to expand Jersey City cannabis control board from 3 to 5 members

The City Council is looking to expand the three-member Jersey City cannabis control board to five members.

The city council introduced an amended ordinance to expand the cannabis control board to include two additional members, one appointed by the mayor and another appointed by the council president. The two selected to join the control board will serve three-year terms.

The cannabis control board is responsible for approving applications for cannabis retail establishments (wholesaler, manufacturer, cultivator and retailer), distributors and delivery. An amended ordinance, passed in August, established the control board, regulations and licensing for the cannabis industry in the city.

I think Mao is onto something here.
If we go back to Alduous Huxley's book BRAVE NEW WORLD, the populace is kept happy and under control with a government issued drug.

After what we've seen in the last year or so, it's pretty obvious that politicians are interested in keeping us under control. What better way to do it than legalizing widespread usage of cannabis? Hallucinogens are sure to be next.

Protect your childre and keep them informed.

Jersey City Council discusses establishing Cannabis Control Board during caucus meeting

By Daniel Ulloa/Hudson County View

First Assistant Corporation Counsel Nick Strasser explained the ordinance establishes a three-person CCB, all appointed by the mayor, that will serve staggered three-year terms.

He said it would be comparable to the ABC board, which regulates liquor licenses. Those who wish to operate in JC will likely be in touch with Jersey City Supervising Planner Matthew Ward and other city officials as the process continues, Strasser noted.

This will come to fruition and JC will be the only city in the state other than AC to allow consumption lounges. They originally were not, but I and many other people wrote to the city planner, urging them to reverse course, and they did.

Another humiliating defeat for Yvonne, all the NAs, and the conservative NIMBYs :)

I am not stupid enough to put smoke in my lungs. But the issue is not me, the issue is the tax. Those who buy cannabis will find ways to avoid paying the tax as they are doing in California and that industry is crashing.

I am not a marijuana user but if I was, I would jut pull out my plants and grow the stuff. I grew up in Hoboken and every year, the Hoboken Fire Department did a control burn on the Palisades near the JC/Union City border. Marijuana was a weed that grew there.

This has more to do with the fact that california had lax laws when it came to opening store fronts and managing licenses. Like all government functions they dropped the ball and allowed it to flourish without reigning the "unofficial" storefronts and cultivators in. So the issue here is bad planning as well as shady business practices in a poorly regulated market

Colorado made "$387,480,110 in taxes and fees in 2020" alone

other legal states also have a net positive income from marijuana sales.

Will the grey and black markets continue to survive? of course but not at the level of illegal states unless the states makes it too restrictive or expensive.

Reefer Madness is dead....get over it!
