How long does the parade last - and what is the route? Does this stop traffic across Newark Ave and elsewhere?

These are great questions that the city really needs to address. Once again, traffic downtown was a nightmare, with very little police presence and zero signage. Drivers had no idea why they were at a standstill on First Street, and many laid on their horns in frustration. This happens every time a parade or festival closes Jersey City streets. Posting it on the city's website isn't enough. They really need to step up awareness before and during these events.

?Being free is the best thing we can be?: Vietnam War vet looks back during Jersey City parade

By Adrienne Romero | The Jersey Journal

JERSEY CITY ? Eric Peterson was only 19 years old when he was drafted in 1969 for the Vietnam War. He remembers it as gruesome and said those who served in the war never received the thanks they deserved when they returned.

Saturday afternoon, Peterson ? a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars ? and many others who served were greeted with thank-you?s, salutes and hat-tipping as they marched from Dickinson High School on Palisade and Newark avenues to City Hall on Grove Street.

The Jersey City & Harsimus Cemetery does a great job of honoring our nation's service people past and present.

It was 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in the year 1918 when the Armistice with Germany was put into effect, ending the Great War. Originally known as Armistice Day, the date of Nov. 11 was officially changed to Veterans Day in the United States in 1954, honoring the service of all U.S. military veterans.

Hudson County will be honoring those who have served our nation with various ceremonies all over in the coming week. Here?s where you can go to honor those who fought for freedom:

Jersey City

-- The city, Mayor Steve Fulop, the City Council, the Office of Cultural Affairs, and the Department of Health and Human Services will present the Veterans Flag-Raising on Thursday, Nov. 7, from 4 to 7 p.m. The flag-raising will be held in City Hall Council Chambers, followed by an opening exhibition in the Rotunda Art Gallery, third floor City Hall from 5 to 7 p.m.

-- The Veterans Day Parade will be held on Saturday, Nov. 9. The parade will step off at noon from Dickinson High School, 2 Palisade Ave.

-- New Jersey City University?s Office of Military & Veterans Affairs will have a week of activities planned in honor of Veterans Day:

Nov. 8-12, Greenlight a Vet Initiative: The Tower will be lit green from in honor of our nation?s heroes. You can also participate at home by putting green light in front of your house to show your support. http://greenlightavet.com.

Monday, Nov. 11, Flag-Raising Ceremony at 9 a.m. in front of the Flagpole at Hepburn Hall. Following this is the OMVS Open House from 2 to 4 p.m. in Grossnickle Room 418. Tour the office and meet NJCU?s military student body. Refreshments will be served.

Tuesday, Nov. 12, Collection for both homeless and deployed veterans from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This event will also take place on Thursday, Nov. 14, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Wednesday, Nov. 13, VA Healthcare of NJ at Grossnickle Hall, Room 418, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The VA will be on campus to discuss benefits and answer questions for students, faculty, and staff who may be entitled under the Department of Veterans Affairs Division of Health.

Friday, Nov. 15, Jeans for Troops Day. Faculty and staff donate $5 in order to wear jeans for the day in support of Veterans and the GI Go Fund, which is a nonprofit organization that assists veterans with housing/homelessness, employment/training and benefits/legal assistance.
