Local stats:
-According to statistics released earlier this year, heroin-related deaths in Hudson County jumped 161 percent from 2010 to 2014, a little higher than the state average of 155 percent. -From January to Nov. 23 this year, JCMC EMS staff administered the drug 250 times. -People using heroin for the first time and having a heroin overdose constitute the number one cause of death for white males in New Jersey over vehicular death. -Medical professionals and social workers say the surge in heroin use has been fueled by people who are already addicted to opiates and other prescription drugs transitioning to something more affordable. -A CDC report found that the strongest risk factor for heroin use is prescription opioid abuse, and that the greatest increase in heroin use is among groups with historically lower rates of use, including women, people with private health insurance, and those with higher incomes. Easy to answer. I know this will be hard for you, it calls for actual empathy. But just try and put yourself in the shoes of that junky's parents, and see what your answer comes out to. Lots of people eventually get clean, but dying really makes that kinda hard.

Chris Christie on Thursday announced the first ongoing national effort by a retailer to offer safe medication disposal kiosks, and also praised Walgreens' decision this week to sell the emergency narcotic overdose medication Naloxone without a prescription in New Jersey. Perched between diabetic socks and gummy prenatal vitamins at the end of Aisle 28, the Republican governor said the move to put the medication disposal kiosks in 16 24-hour Walgreens locations throughout the state would help prevent prescription drug abuse and reduce overdose deaths. For those in recovery, "the holiday season is a time of enormous triggers," Christie said. "Which is why I am so glad Walgreen's is participating in this." More
