NJ has a partially deregulated electric and gas market. The part that is regulated still is the delivery. This is the wires and pipes that deliver your electric and gas into the home. PSE&G maintains these systems. Prices, taxes (there are a lot of those), and fees for these services are set by the State and the BPU (Board of Public Utilities).

The other part of your bill is the commodity. This is the actual electric and gas generated. You can buy them from a number of different suppliers on variable or price fixed plans (I recommend you NEVER go with a variable plan). If you don't chose a supplier, your electric & gas will be delivered by PSE&G under the old 'regulated' variable price system.

The delivery side of the bill is a Byzantine nightmare to understand with all the fees and balancing charges. I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about it.

You can find suppliers online:

It might be a good idea to lock in a long term gas price now since it is so cheap. It is a hedge should gas prices skyrocket like they did back in the mid 2000s.

Electricity is just really expensive right now. My rate lock expires this year, which means a 30% increase when it does.

I'd like to get an understanding of PSE&G. Is the supply charge just for gas? If that's the case, it doesn't seem to pay to change since it's a minimal fee, at least from what I can gather from my bills. If that's not the case, are there any recommended companies over PSE&G?

Gas / Electric: PSE&G does the delivery. You can choose another provider for the commodity portion.

Water: United Water
Sewer: JCMUA

Cable TV / Internet: Comcast, Verizon (there are others but these are the two biggies).

Hello. I will be closing on a house in the JSQ area in the next couple of weeks. I could use some information on local utility providers - electricity, natural gas, water, sewer, etc. Who are the main providers? Is there any decent competition? Or are we stuck with monopoly/municipal providers?
