A Jersey City woman who is about 70 years old was shot in the cheek last night in what is being called an accidental discharge of a firearm in her apartment and at 9:15 p.m. she was in stable condition at Jersey City Medical Center-Barnabas Health, officials said. "I just heard a gunshot and then I heard people screaming her name," said a 13-year-old resident who lives on the third floor of the building on Clendenny Avenue west of West Side Avenue. His apartment door is adjacent to the door of the woman who was shot. The teen's father said the woman's "grandson ran over and knocked on my door and said, 'My grandmother has been shot.' I looked in their door and she was standing up and her daughter was holding a towel to the side of her head." Emergency medical technicians and paramedics from the Medical Center responded, and the paramedics were able to stop the woman's bleeding on the way to the hospital, Medical Center spokesman Mark Rabson said. Rabson said the woman was talkative, was being evaluated and would receive a CAT scan to determine the extent of the injury. Additional information was not available from Jersey City police.
