Wow as a kid in JC we couldn?t wait for the parades up Journal Square the place was packed you couldn?t even move. Our parents had to put us on their shoulders so we could see. Like we were watching the Electric Light parade in WDW. They were that big of a deal.

The heritage of Jersey City's Italian-American community was on full displace this afternoon as the city held its 2013 Columbus Day Parade in downtown.

Honest question: The CC day parade is essentially an italian event, right? If so - what's up with the TWO different bagpipe groups? I am unaware (but could just be ignorant to the culture) of any significant link between bagpipes and Italy. Does everything around here have to have pipers piping?

This is not a dig but isn?t it ironic that the Columbus Day Parade will take place DT while a parade of 150 cement trucks are also on parade. No not because of the old ?cement shoes? comment. It is because when I was growing up in JC all of my DT Italian friends grand fathers and fathers would do cement work around their houses on weekends. Even if nothing needed fixing they would put on an old suit jacket and have trowel in hand for the work. Hoping to find a small crack or loose brick so they could mix up a fresh batch. Funny I remember that.

The 2013 Jersey City Columbus Day Parade steps off this afternoon at Sixth Street and Newark Avenue.

The parade will proceed east along Newark to Jersey Avenue, then south to City Hall, 280 Grove St.

This year?s event, sponsored by the Dante Alighieri Society, marks the fifth year the Columbus Day Parade will take place in one of Jersey City?s most established Italian-American neighborhoods, which includes Holy Rosary Church, the oldest Italian parish in New Jersey.
