You may have the best plan. I wanted to transfer a specific set of commercials to show someone, but having a deck I could do much more and be done with it. I called up a place in Hoboken Mimosa Digital, that says on it's website A/V Transfer and Compilation. The girl who answered the phone had no idea what I was talking about with 3/4. "Is that smaller than VHS?" Getting old sucks, it sucks more when our media gets old. But the resurgence of vinyl is totally bizarre.

There is a place downtown that is a music studio called Buck 50 productions.
They do this type of work, they are somewhere downtown/Newport area. Not sure what their actually address is. Good luck!

I don't know anyone local, but I work with Jeff Wertz at MultiMedia Video in Metuchen on several projects a month and his work is excellent and always top notch. http://multimediavideo.com/

No local place that I know of. A bunch of sites online if you want to ship your tapes, but it's something like $50-80 per cassette to transfer to DVD.
One other idea: Buy the cheapest WORKING U-Matic unit on eBay for maybe $100, make your transfers (assuming you have suitable capture hardware on a PC) and sell it for close to what you paid. Those machines were so expensive that they were rarely found in home use. Good luck!
