May she rest in peace, but the headline should be "Woman dies after coronary behind the wheel". It sounds like the crash was the result of the heart attack, and the snow was incidental.

Jersey City woman, 41, dies after crashing car into tree while driving in city during Dec. 26 blizzard

Friday, January 07, 2011
By ASHLEY STRAIN
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

The snowstorm that pounded New Jersey on Dec. 26 apparently led to the death of a 41-year-old Jersey City woman who lost control of her vehicle on Jersey Avenue and crashed into a tree, according to family members and police reports.

Shortly after the accident occurred at 9:55 p.m., Patricia Hodge was rushed to the Jersey City Medical Center, where she went into cardiac arrest and never regained consciousness, according to her sister, Debra Armstrong.

Hodge's 20-year-old daughter was stranded at work and needed a ride home, so Hodge ventured out into the storm, with her 14-year-old nephew, to pick her up, Armstrong explained.

On the way back to her Communipaw Avenue home, Hodge grew frightened because of the weather conditions and began to experience chest pains and shortness of breath, her relatives told police, according to reports.

Hodge then lost control of her 2001 Ford Expedition and ran head-on into a tree, reports said.

The nephew and daughter survived the crash, but Patricia Hodge did not.

"In the beginning, we were hopeful that she would come out of it eventually," Armstrong said. "But on Tuesday, Dec. 28, a CAT scan showed that part of her brain was damaged."

The following day, Armstrong was called to the hospital because her sister's body started to deteriorate.

"We had to make the decision to take her off support and once we did, she passed away within 15 minutes," Armstrong said. "I was there with her every day, and it was hard to watch her go through that."

Patricia Hodge's wake is scheduled for Wednesday, 6 to 9 p.m., at the Cornerstone Church of Christ, 293 Pacific Ave., Jersey City. The funeral will be Thursday at noon at Bayview Cemetery on Garfield Avenue.
